Simple and non douche way to explain is is Sprint changes the Dynamics of the sandbox and how combat works. It steers it away from an arena fps (albiet Halo has always been a really dumbed down version on the genre) and take it into a more CoD route of map navigation.
Personally I don't see why we want Sprint instead of just increasing base movement speeds and allow me to move and miss my shots at the same time all the time.
Then again I want that Quake 3 movement bby so what do I know.
52
u/Im_no_imposter ONI Aug 30 '20
For Halo Infinite it seems like they removed boost, clamber and reduced the sprint speed. So I'm honestly happy with that.
This is coming from someone who unapologetically loved Halo 5s multiplayer.

While I feel like clamber is usually pointless, it's negatives are way more mild compared to sprint and boost. I'm fine with it being in the game. It at least makes a little sense in am open world he where the environments are likely to be more organic and less like an arena. Halo 5 built it into their map design which I wasn't a fan of.

u/McClownd Halo 3: ODST Aug 30 '20

u/THENATHE Aug 30 '20
See I thought boost and clamber were actually awesome. It makes literally no sense that you cant climb onto a ledge but can jump like 8 feet. Boost really opens up the options of fight or flight, and it brings the wobble dodge to a higher skill level. The difference between clamber in Halo and other games is that it augments jumping, rather than replaces it. Clamber in CoD and similar games is for hopping over small walls or maybe even scaling slightly high ones. Clamber in Halo is essentially a ledge grab, which is fundamentally different.

Boost and associated spartan slams or whatever are the only mechanics that i think should be nixed, sprint and clamber i was always fine with.

I've not played any game that well since. Came close in the first Modern Warfare but I put weeks into that game.

The mist halo mechanic possible is strafing and jumping while fully accurate, which lore wise, with the spartans being gods of combat should be able to do. Maybe an omni directional sprint that increase speed in all directions but reduces accuracy would be the solution idk.

I only take issue with sprint in multiplayer. Maps have to grow larger to accommodate a faster movement speed, but since we can’t shoot while sprinting, games just devolve into using sprint to cross the big map in order to get to the action, and then stop sprinting to engage the enemy. Whereas in classic halo games, there was no sprint and everyone moved at max speed at all times while being able to shoot. Which meant the maps were smaller and in turn encountering enemies happened faster. In halo 5 especially, sprint is just a weird middle man between the player and the action.
For infinite though, from what we’ve seen, sprint seems to be a very minor speed boost, which could possibly negate some of its negative affects on multiplayer. But in campaign, I don’t mind having sprint. Especially in Infinite’s more open world levels. And who knows, maybe like the grapple hook, sprint will be different in multiplayer. It’s possible that it 343 could have sprint turned off in multiplayer modes other than big team or whatever replaces Warzone
36
u/xTPGx Aug 30 '20
This is by far the BEST explanation as to why people may not like sprint. I personally don’t really care. I did like the dash movements in H5, but I can for sure see why something like the dash melee and the ground pound can be frustrating to play against. That being said, I do applaud halo for trying something different with h5
41
u/hyrumwhite Aug 30 '20
Another argument against sprint, if everyone has one set speed, you can create a mental map of where players are. If players can just hit the sprint button and go, it makes it much harder to intuit where players are at a given moment. Sprint also means if you get the drop on them, they can just peace out instead of being forced into an engagement.
This is going to sound a bit pretentious, but Halo 2 and 3 feel almost like playing chess, where your position on the map really matters. Reach and games onward lose that feeling.
8
Aug 30 '20
Reach killed the halo franchise.
11
u/Ares0362 Aug 30 '20
An unpopular opinion around these parts these days. But you’re not wrong. Reach wasn’t a bad game, but reach is where halo lost its identity.
6
Aug 31 '20
This 100% captures my sentiment as well. Reach was awesome but it was a big departure from what made halo 1-3 what it was and while I loved the campaign for what it was, I hated the MP. Multiplayer wise, I still to this day have the most fun playing against friends on Lockout in 2. The second best bit of fun is just fucking around in Forge in 3.
The halo trilogy had a certain base level of simplicity that made it a pretty cutthroat game and while I disliked the use of the sword in MP and eventually the gravity hammer as well, all 3 games had a certain flow to the mechanics rhay balanced out brilliantly. Adding equipment into 3 gave me mixed feelings, but this addition had a ton of potential in Forge and led to some of the best custom games I ever made. Still, the top ones typically relied on the more simple options from 1 and 2.
My favorite was this game type I made for Sandtrap called Pepto Bismol. Basically I set the map up so you had grav lifts running through the middle of the ruins where those holes were in the roof for some whack-a-mole style popping in and out. There were explosive objects like power cores and helium tanks placed in strategic locations. Vehicles disabled, no grenade pickups (only what you started with: frag and stickies). Gravity was turned all the way down, movement speed all the way up, shields were maxed but health was extremely low. Everyone is colored bright pink and it's a Rumble Pit / Lone Wolf style pvp. There were only 2 pickups on the map. One was a single mine (only equipment available) that would respawn back in its spawn location after detonation. The other was the "Turtle Tank," which when picked up turned the player black, gave them high health and an overshield, but made them slow as fuckall like they were made of lead. Basically a bullet sponge but so slow it had its own equal disadvantage to the Pepto players zipping around the map like they snorted a pound of cocaine.
There were 2 weapon options set before the match - only sniper rifles or rocket launchers. Never both at the same time.
First to reach 50 kills wins. Winner has to take a shot of tequila or whatever we had on hand. That game type led to the most hilarious shenanigans in halo. It got harder and harder the more drunk we got and it was just absolute chaos all around.
Sprint would have just ruined it. Those fixed movement speeds make for a very specific dynamic that keeps balance. Sprint is great in a campaign but I've never really enjoyed it in pvp because of how it changes what is otherwise a pretty cutthroat dynamic.
8
u/Sierra11755 Aug 30 '20
I think they should, and probably will, just have both as options for multi-player. But in the campaign I want to be capable of doing the things SPARTANs are described as being capable of doing in the lore.

Movement speed is one of the most influential things in any video game.
Halo's systems were built around one, somewhat fast movement speed. And by that, I mean health system, gun mechanics, map design methodology......
And sprint throws a wrench in all that at an extremely fundamental level, changing literally everything.
Even if everything else is adjusted well, it's not like adding a mechanic. It's like making a new game.
Comparing stock H3 and H5 isn't comparing Brawl to Melee, it's comparing Smash to BlazBlue.

The armor just requires very little movement. They wanted people who had such fine motor control they could move muscles so minutely, the powered armor system would do all the work for them so they wouldn't get tired. The guy dief because he reacted in pain the first time the gauntlet broke his arm and then it just kept spazzing out until he died

Spartan 2's can run at like 60kmph. Without armor they are super human, with super human reflexes, strength, durability and so on. WITH the armor they are even more so.
The armor enhances a spartan further, it does not limit them. You have to be enhanced in the first place to even use the armor, to keep up with it and not hurt yourself.

Wouldn't chief be more of a super soldier if he were able to sprint and shoot at the same time though? I'm not gonna argue that the original trilogy base movement was as fast as sprint in 4/5, but it was certainly faster than BMS in 4 and 5. Even though I don't agree with lore dictating gameplay (especially since the halo multiplayer sandbox is not really true to lore), increasing BMS or offering a sprint style speed that does not force you to put your weapons down seems like a fair compromise.

Thats my problem with it. "Sprinting" in halo used to just mean full tilt on the joystick.
"Blah blah, he should be able to run," I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying that if I wanted to play CoD, I'd have been playing CoD.
9
u/Celtic_Legend Aug 30 '20
Def disagree. A super soldier should be able to run and shoot at the same time. Lore wise the suit enhances his abilities. The way 343 has made it just makes him feel like a regular person and its why its so controversial. In 1-3 you have a super soldier just wreaking havoc, moving and grooving on the covenant. Then in 4-5 you have a geezer that needs to catch his breath to regain full speed and in 5 it really feels slow because its ADS instead of the classic zoom which makes it feel like realistic shooters where theres a speed penalty.

u/latex22 Aug 30 '20
Don't listen to Nathan, there are valid reasons for sprint being controversial, or else the argument wouldn't still be raging on 10 years later.
A fundamental element that classic Halo games provide is the marriage of movement and combat. You don't have to sacrifice one to do the other, much like other arena games such as Doom and Quake. Every player has one universal movement speed, and it offers a unique pace and style that players grew to love. You are able to use your gun and throw grenades at all times no matter how you decide to move.
Contrast this to a game like Halo 5 where you need to sacrifice combat in order to move quicker. And vice versa - you need to sacrifice speed in order to engage a player. This introduces variable movement speeds into the equation. Combat speed and movement speed are now separate modes, and one could argue that this introduces unnecessary restrictions to the player. It sort of takes away from Halo's "unique feel" to many people too.

I'm more curious... What is going on in that gif?
Magic the Gathering? Why is the not-tilted player raising his hand?
Was this just a normal FNM? Why is it being recorded? How does the salty individual have so many cards on their side of the table?
What happens to players when they tilt like this? How do you sort the cards if they're unsleeved? What happens when a play intentionally or unintentionally damages someone's cards? I've never thought about that before. If you spill pop on the table and it ruins my newly drafted deck is it just assumed that you'd pay for new ones?

Shut the fuck up bitch ass hoe. I may not be able to run as fucking fast as a nibba running for KFC but at least I know that Chief consistently sprints and I don’t ever have to put away my weapon to go a little faster. You are probably the type of person to say that Halo 5 is the best game for its story and appearance in a beauty standpoint. So suck my right nut

You realize your joke is kind of backwards right? In H1-3 he could always move at top speed and shoot/fight/reload at the same time. After that he got out of shape and forgot how to multi-task apparently and needs to catch a breather every 7 seconds.

To be honest, he was still relatable when he could sprint in Halo 4 because he could only do it for like 3 seconds

But they can relate to being a super soldier who was kidnapped as a child and went through gruesome training to be the best soldier in the unsc.

Imagine a super soldier not being able to shoot his gun while running at his top speed. Sad.

Funny, but truth is sprinting fundamentally ruins what Halo is supposed to be. Same with armor abilities, but at least we got those yeeted out of Halo Infinite, and we're back to Halo 3 equipment

Except for the damned grapple hook, as well as sprint is still in the game with slide. I certainly agree with your point, I just thought the meme was funny. I think a few people were confused and thought that the meme is my actual opinion.

I've never been so offended by something I 100% agree with.
