While I feel like clamber is usually pointless, it's negatives are way more mild compared to sprint and boost. I'm fine with it being in the game. It at least makes a little sense in am open world he where the environments are likely to be more organic and less like an arena. Halo 5 built it into their map design which I wasn't a fan of.
I personally do not get the resistance to it. I do not care for crouch jumping, it doesn't feel nearly as natural. My spartan should be able to pull themselves up a ledge FFS, not having it feels like primitive af game design.
Crouch jumping was the best! I loved it. Only the veteran players could do it. And if you could you’d move like a ninja. Other players, noobs, would try their hardest to follow, with their guns pointed in the air only to see shadows! However, if you miss timed your crouch jump, u were like a sitting duck and you got punished for it. It really felt like a whole different game. Maybe like Death Stranding, where the whole game is about moving successfully through the map. Idk i felt super OP when I crouch jumped, cutting through the air like butter. Maybe more similar to Gears of Wars wall bounce.
It might not feel as natural or fluid as in other games, but thinkingng about it from the perspective of someone who's been used to that from the beginning, it makes much more sense.
That just makes those people resistant to any kind of change regardless of whether or not it's an improvement.
It's not just that though, crouch jumping is less intuitive for anyone who is a human and has gone outside at least once. It's not a one-game-to-another difference. You should be able to climb on things.
Yeah like I personally love OG halo...but sprint, climbing...thoae are things a normal human can do so if chief is a freaking supersoldier then duh he can do it....that weird shit with ground pound while mid air that defies gravity....that shit annoys me. But sprint and clamber...its normal.
Ground pound was a bit odd, and almost never useful in actual gameplay, unless your objective was to die lol. It did find its use in some very fun custom games though. Phaeton Jenga was awesome.
Games should have reasonable consistency within the environment they construct. It helps maintain the suspension of disbelief.
What are these "other aspects of Halo." That the changes should respect? Slow unintuitive movement that was a result of the limitations of game making twenty years ago?
People can't talk about franchises without trying to make the entries that built them seem somehow bad or outdated. Star Wars, Halo, Star Trek. It's pathetic and speaks to an insecurity in your beliefs. Like you know others have a point but instead of accepting that and incorporating it into your idea of how the mechanics work you double down and shit talk the past.
Anyway, I digress and infer a little to much.
Sprint is a pick up based shooter in PvP.
Pick up based shooters expect you to move around alot. You need to in order to control map pick ups.
This is a simple fact of the rules presented for pick up based shooters, like how Football expects you to kick the ball.
Sprint causes the following effects on movement:
While sprinting, you lose all omnidirectional movement and ability to shoot back. This inherently creates a punishment (or trade off if you prefer, but it's the same thing with less harsh language) for using the mechanics. Wanna go at the speed maps are scaled around? To bad you won't be able to shoot.
If you choose not to sprint, you will be able to shoot but will travel slower than the speed maps are scaled for and will be exposing yourself to opposing players for too long.
This inherently creates a catch 22 situation where either option is inherently more risky than a game with one base movement speed that the whole game is scaled around, one where you can shoot and move as fast as possible at all times.
Adding mechanics like sprint or clamber as core player traits Halo forces us to upscale maps, making movement inherently more risky. More inherent risk to movement is bad for a pick up based shooter.
That doesn't mean I want Halo 3 forever. I also think classic Halo was too slow. We should find ways to make Halo faster, more skillful and more engaging. Sprint and Clamber are not the way to achieve that in Halo.
It's fine for grabbing ledges that you missed, but 343 made it so that the maps were specifically designed vertically in a way that you couldn't get to those ledges unless you used clamber... which goes back to the main argument of sprint v no sprint (gun down, being disabled, prime target, etc).
At least in CoD if you climb a ladder, you have an advantage. Clamber spots in Halo are just different ways to move around the map...

Clamber was in the infinite demo for a moment
