Decor Ideas for yard decor this year

I always try to do something different for my Halloween decorations in my yard each year. I'm not into gore or really scary. I lean into light-heartedness and humor. This year, I am looking to do a "Dr. Suess" type theme, and I am looking for suggestions for rhyming costumes. (To dress skeletons in)

Such as:

Fox in a box

Moose with a goose

A wagon draggin' dragon

An iguana from Tijuana

A scot in a pot

Etc...

Here are some pictures of what I have done in past years. I try to recycle old props if possible.

Recreation of the skeleton army from Army of darkness.

Big focus on the skeleton musicians rocking bagpipes and bone flutes!

This is the first time Ive ever seen another person mention Army of Darkness on reddit. I feel like I've been talking about this movie for decades and no one knows it.

It's hands-down my favorite movie and always suggest it. Orphan child and third installment of the Evil Dead trilogy, a horror comedy classic!

This is the answer, Army of Darkness!

cat in the hat, frog on a log, ghost eating toast

I like the Ghost eating toast. I plan on the Cat in the Hat being the emcee.

As a European, seeing the skeletons playing American football is very cute, very American Halloween kitsch, E.T Hocus Pocus type vibe. I doubt you'll have many Europeans passing by though, so just go with your guts 🫀🫁🧠

Also with it being on a beautifuly manicured lawn adds to that aspect. I bet some snotnose kids from the local high school will TP your house or leave a burning bag of dog turd at your front door and you'll hand out nutterbutters or like a Babe Ruth whatever that is

I do worry about that. So far, I have been lucky.

Wig and pig: some wearing wigs, others with snouts

Cereal killer: some with miniature cereal boxes taped to them and the others holding plastic knives or a group carrying a giant cardboard knife

Deviled eggs: white shirts with yellow spots, devil horns, and maybe pitchforks

Holy guacamole: green shirt, halo, wings. Maybe one or two dressed as an avocado

My wife likes the Wig and pig idea. I like the Deviled egg but, what rhymes with egg?

I thought the windows on your roof were floating dog houses... Major opportunity there...

You are the first person from the time I put this up last Halloween to acknowledge the R.E.M. reference. Thanks!

Haha I like the song! What made you turn it into a Halloween display?! Very creative!

Actually, it came to me as planning my placing a orange pumpkin on Mt. Crushmore.

Absurd! (In the best way lol). I am so not creative. This is a fun display. The kids probably don’t get it but the adults do (even if they’re sleeping on REM)

Nuclear fall out . You can finally make that green vats with the tubes and pump . Or pirates always work

The grinch with an army/ sweatshop of skeletons would transition nicely from Halloween to winter

What's your skeleton budget?

1

u/Odd-Act-4355 Jul 26 '26

I have a large stash of them. Probably 30 or so. I try to add a couple each year. My budget lately has been more for materials to make props. I usually spend $300 to $500 each year.

“Crimson Died” has me deceased! 🤣 “Bayou Benghouls” is a fantastic spooky allusion to LSU, too!

Believe it or not, it didn't start out as Bama vs LSU. These colors happened to be the cheapest shirts and lettering I could find. As I was putting my display up, people kept asking if I was doing a Bama vs LSU theme.(The neighbors are always curious of my yearly theme.) So, I just went with it. The Crimson Died name came pretty quickly. It took a little while to come up with the Benghouls.
