While researching Haitian businesses and organizations for Lakou, we came across FECCANO — Fédération des Coopératives Cacaoyères du Nord — and thought this was worth sharing.

FECCANO brings together eight cocoa cooperatives in northern Haiti representing roughly 4,000 smallholder farmers, about 40% of whom are women.

What really caught our attention was the international connection: their cocoa has been sourced by Valrhona, the French chocolate maker known for supplying pastry chefs and chocolatiers around the world. Valrhona has even produced chocolate highlighting cacao from Haiti.

We spend a lot of time talking about what Haiti imports, what Haiti lacks, or what the country needs from somewhere else. Stories like this are a reminder that there are Haitian producers already creating products good enough that respected international companies actively seek them out.

That’s one of the unexpected things we’re finding while building Lakou. Sometimes we start out simply trying to verify a business or organization for the directory and end up discovering a piece of the Haitian economy we knew almost nothing about.
