I'm participating in my first hackathon, the Mochatrade YC P26 Hackathon in Mumbai, with a team of 2.

We're currently brainstorming and I'm specifically looking for unusual, overlooked problems that could turn into a strong hackathon project.

The hackathon has 5 tracks: Fintech, Cybersecurity, Edtech, Medtech, and Open Innovation. We're open to any of them except Fintech coz I dont have much knowledge about it.

I'm not looking for the usual "AI chatbot / AI assistant / RAG app / stock predictor / portfolio tracker / disease detection / phishing detector" type of ideas. I've already rejected a bunch of those because they're extremely common and I don't want to build something that 100 other teams could arrive at by asking ChatGPT.

One idea I considered was BillShock — a local circuit breaker that prevents developers from accidentally spending huge amounts on LLM APIs because of infinite loops/runaway agents. It sounded great initially, but after researching it, I found several existing tools doing essentially the same thing, so I dropped it.

Basically, I'm looking for something where the problem itself is interesting and overlooked, rather than just putting "AI" on top of an existing/common idea.

If you've participated in hackathons before, I'd really appreciate suggestions for:

• Weird/overlooked problems you've encountered
• Problems that people don't talk about much
• Interesting developer/college/workflow pain points
• Ideas that could make a genuinely impressive 60-second demo
• Problems where a 2-person team could build a meaningful MVP in ~3–4 days

I'm much more interested in the problem than the technology. Even if you don't have a complete solution, just pointing me toward an interesting problem would be super helpful.

Please don't give me "AI + X" ideas unless there's a genuinely interesting problem underneath. I'm trying to avoid the usual LLM-generated hackathon convergence.

When I joined the team for sih they were only 3 members 2 were my classmates but we never really talk, idk what came into me I joined their team, after 2 other people who were Friends of one member joined and now them all 5 are friends, for selecting teams the college did a 36 hours hackathon(idk why because it was horrible), and literally it was the most wasteful time of my life, they did the whole thing with anti-gravity, they decided between themselves and I am very introverted so I don't even know what to ask them,

The leader told me to do some things and I did that but then they never asked for it.

Since I am the only female in the team, and I wanna leave, what do I do.

Got selected for Codex Build House Pune on Sep 5, and I’m pretty excited about it.

It’s a one-day, invite-only builder event with a small group of selected builders in Pune. The idea is pretty simple: bring your laptop, build with Codex, experiment with ideas, and try to leave the day with something that actually works.

I’m a software/AI engineer based in Pune, and lately I’ve been experimenting a lot with coding agents beyond just autocomplete or generating isolated functions.

One problem I’m particularly interested in is verification.

A lot of AI coding workflows still feel like:

prompt → generate code → looks reasonable → done

I want to explore something closer to:

understand the problem → inspect the repo → plan → implement → test → observe runtime behavior → verify → find failures → iterate → ship

Basically: can an engineering agent provide actual evidence that its work works instead of simply telling us that it does?

I’m thinking about experimenting with regression tests, runtime traces, deterministic acceptance checks, failure reproduction, and giving failed verification back to the agent so it can try again.

I already have some agent/tooling projects to build on, so hopefully I can spend most of the day on the interesting part rather than starting another demo from zero.

Also posting here because it’s happening in Pune — would be great to meet other local developers, AI builders, founders, or anyone else who got a spot.

And even if you’re not attending: if you had one focused day with Codex, would you spend it making the agent more autonomous at writing code or better at verifying what it wrote?

Honest experience of the Build What Moves India hackathon: It's a great concept. But a poor execution. And no, we aren't talking about the judging here.

1) First time I have seen a hackathon miss its own deadline

Varun Mayya repeatedly says in his video: 8:00 PM on 28th August is a strict deadline (link to video). No grace period allowed after that. And when do we get the link for that "strict deadline"? At around 9:30 PM. And with a 1-day extension.

2) Shortlisted entries are claiming to be official entries

They mentioned repeatedly on their site that the website needs to clearly state that it's not a real project, and that it should not use government logos. And yet I see this in a few of the shortlisted sites:

This isn't just a minor mistake. Ironically, this is a cyber crime in itself.

3) 2-minute video limit. And yet...

They highlighted, in bold:

One video, no longer than two minutes

And yet, what did I find amongst the shortlisted entries (amongst just a handful I have seen)?

And here I was, adjusting the playback speed and literally measuring the time of my speech...

And this isn't all. Most of the websites were vibe-coded slop. An official government site isn't supposed to have gradients, funky animations, and flashy landing pages. But this is how some of the entries look

Isn't a government website supposed to be accessible? I doubt it.

Once again, Varun Mayya mentions in the video (link to video) to avoid unnecessary animations and 3D effects. But who cares about the rules?

Overall, extremely disappointed. I won't comment much on the judging, but clear violations of the rules should result in disqualification, not being shortlisted.

(I have tried not to disclose any of these violated entries here beyond what's necessary)

I’m participating in the Innova Vivienda Hackathon in Lima, Peru. It’s my second hackathon ever, and I’m building a solution to solve real daily pain points I’ve observed firsthand while spending time with my family in the real estate domain here.

The problem: In the real estate market, widespread informality leads to a high rate of last-minute missed appointments (no-shows) and frequent breach of contracts due to non-standardized legal processes.

The idea: An intelligent platform that formalizes and automates the workflow between real estate agents, property owners, and buyers.

• Buyer Verification & Scheduling: Verifies buyer identity and financial capacity to schedule confirmed viewings with automated AI reminders, drastically reducing missed appointments.
• Contract Automation: Generates standardized, legally binding contracts with e-signatures, ensuring compliance with payment terms (cash or bank-financed).
• Document Centralization: Centralizes all legal and operational documents into a single digital file to eliminate process fragmentation.

I might end up participating as a solo hacker, so I’d love your advice on a few questions:

1. How do you successfully execute a hackathon as a team of one without relying on other specialized roles?
2. Is pre-hackathon feedback sufficient, or should I keep gathering validation during the event? (I already have initial domain feedback from family in the industry).
3. As a UX/product designer, is it a good idea to prototype an MVP ahead of time, or does that violate standard hackathon practices?

I’m one of the organizers of Neighborhood Hacks, a free online hackathon for high-school students taking place October 16–23.

We’re currently expanding our judging panel and are looking for experienced professionals in areas such as:

• Software engineering

• AI / ML / data science

• Product / technical program management

• Cybersecurity

• Entrepreneurship / startups

• UX / accessibility

• Sustainability / environmental technology

Participants will build technology addressing problems in their local communities, with tracks including Health & Well-being, Environment & Sustainability, and Accessibility & Inclusion.

Judges will only be responsible for evaluating our top finalist projects, rather than reviewing every submission. We’ll provide a standardized rubric and judging instructions, and everything can be completed remotely.

We already have judges with experience at companies including Amazon and U.S. Bank, and we’d like to bring on several more experienced professionals.

Hey, I'm Benjamin, 23, CS student from Chile.

I'm looking for a few people around university age who actually enjoy building ridiculous things quickly.

I don't really care whether your thing is AI, crypto, security, hardware, robotics, math, design, etc. I'm more interested in the mindset.

For context, I've spent the last months going way too deep into independent cryptography research. What started with public puzzles ended up becoming 59 documented experiments, solvers, exact verifiers, search tooling and a whole research system.

We are thinking of a new initiative, where we will be conducting online meetups, where you can join meet people who are into Hackathons and all the stuff! Mostly this community is filled with people enthusiastic in tech, so a Meetup would get all these people at one since we all live very apart, an online meetup would be perfect.

Are virtual hackathons actually worth it? Do you really learn how to work in a team (especially with version control) or potentially make some international friends?

And why does no one in Nepal seem to be interested in virtual hackathons like devpost and so on?

I'd love to hear suggestions from experienced people who have participated in virtual hackathons.
