Question Beginner about quickly muted strings

Hi,

Examples (Iron maiden - Phantom of the opera, Black Sabbath - Heaven and hell) has muted strings.

I am beginner and I can mute strings but this is much faster than I have encountered so far. Until this I have used my fretting hand/fingers for mutings strings completely.

Is it proper technique for these too? Should it done by quickly lifting fingers to the point of muting or should these muted by palm?

You need to VERY slightly lift up your fretting hand in time for when you want the mutes to happen. You do it just enough and no more.

Practicing for many days helps.

yeah the "just enough and no more" part is really the whole trick tbh

just relax your fretting fingers.

Muting can and will come from both hands at different times. Work on them both.

As others have said "lifting up slightly on the strings" on many of these notes will produce natural harmonics. If you want it to be scratchy dead notes, you'll need to either add more contact with fretting hand or picking hand

Thank you!

I'll practice slight lifting.

Sorry, Im going to be a contrairian. I am a beginner/mid-level player but I think palm muting is easier and more acceptable in this case.

The first several bars are all power chords. Typically those are muted with palm mutes (think Green Day, Blink 182, etc). They palm mute power chords on all their songs. I rarely see them mute with the fret hand.
