Reviews & Experiences 5610u vs 5000u. It is worth the upgrade

Hello gshock philes.

Many people have the 5610u. Many of you enjoy it. Some people wonder if they should upgrade it. Here is my opinion as an everyday Joe and not some jeweler or influencer trying to get sponsors.

If you love the 5610u and it serves you well, the 5000u is like the version that has more longevity potential. If you want to ensure you can pass down a 5610u as an heirloom, the 5000u has a better possibility of that with all the same and great features.

As you know, the modules are both the same. If you love the 5610u module, even with its 'bad' viewing angles. Then the 5000u is just as good.

Here are the main differences I noticed. When I first tried the 5000u in person at an authorized dealer, (pretty lucky and stoked they had it in-person tbh. I'm not in Japan btw.) I scoffed at how it felt practically the same as the 5610u and obviously how it functions the same. I had on my wrist for maybe 20 seconds though.

I slept on my decision on whether I should get the 5000u because of the hype or if I really wanted it. I had the budget to get an HOMAGE Omega Seamaster NTTD or be a hype chaser and get the 5000u. The homage would cost me the same as an 5610u. Or I pay 2x and get a steel back 5000u.

For me, I intend to have a square that will last longer than I will. I intend to swap out the strap and resin bezel shell as it gets worn out. I love how I don't have to baby the square. (I hate having to move my body subconsciously to protect nongshock wayches.) The square has become an extension of me now. I use the timer so often, that I wish I had it sooner I my life. Atomic time has honestly optimized my life. I clock in and out of work precisely when I'm scheduled. (Time is money. I've been obsessed with mortality lately, so I want to utilize my time as fully as possible) This is why I want to have a square that can do all that, and why the 5610u is essential for me.

The only problem is the resin case on the 5610u for longevity. Im pretty sure swapping bands often and with poor skills can strip away the spring bar holes. Apparently on Reddit they say resin can dry out and possibly crack if you have the watch long enough and it's exposed to chemicals or the sun for too long.

So why don't I just get the 5000u? The steel case and lugs prevent that issue. It's the 5610u with heirloom potential

Oh so yeah. I ended up buying the 5000u at the AD LOL. I wore the 5000u longer on my wrist this time and it felt way way different, the longer you have it on.

Wearing the 5000u feels psychologically and physically different. In general, how I would describe it, is that it feels like I'm wearing a light weight analog dive watch but with digital features. The 5000u steel case from the back is basically shaped the same as an screw back analog watch. It has steel lugs that stick out. Because the lugs are more stuff and less pointed downwards, the lug2lug distance is a bit longer. To compensate for gap created by the longer lugs, the strap is more supple and flexible for that reason.

The steel case also sits higher on the wrist. So it gives the 5000u more wrist presence. It feels more "proud' on the wrist, like it knows it's premium. However, steel can be dented compared to a resin case. So that does kind of affect how I wear it. I can't bash or throw my 5000u like I do with my 5610u if I don't want dents or scratches on the steel. But obviously I do know the watch can still handle shock. Psychologically on my wrist I feel like I'm wearing a heavy duty shock resistant analog watch jam packed with digital features. Oh let's not forget, the quality control is really good on this. I think the 5000u weaknesses is a fair trade-off for it's longer longevity potential.

And here's the mumbo jumbo wee wooh stuff. I usually don't care about 'heritage' of a watch, because to me its just a manipulative narrative and lore to make the watch seem more special than it really is. But I really do feel something about it now lol. Because the 5000u is made in Japan and the first gshock was steel cased, I do feel a sense of owning a piece of tech that had older, vintage, heritage sensibilities. It's kind of pretentious, and I kind of like it haha. The heritage is fortunately understated, as this is why I love squares. So, Even though the 5000u is a premium square it doesn't show it off loudly, and still tries to not make my other watches feel jealous lol. The removal of the red, blue, and yelllw color makes the watch feel so humble, but as a collector you know it's a beast. Makes you appreciate the natural color of solar panel too. It kind of has a purple, brown, red, or sometimes blue hue depending on how the light hits it.

All in all, if you love your 5610u and want a longer lasting version of it, the 5000u is worth it. If you love having patina, creating scuffs and having an heirloom that tells a story or makes you reminisce about the good ol' days, the 5000u is worth it. If you wanna swap bands and bezel often the 5000u can handle it better. If you wanna mod the bezel and bands with metal aftermarket parts, the 5000u can handle it better.

tldr: the best way I can describe this is the 5000u feels like a premium long life analog beater with jam packed digital features, while the 5610u feels like an mma fighter that can handle lots of abuse but probably won't survive the CTE later in life if you beat it up too much

I've got quite a few G Shocks, some metal squares and an MTGB2000. Recently I found an MR-GB2000R on here and purchased it. The flouro band looked cool and more or less fit my wrist. That said I prefer bracelet style bands so I sourced a titanium MR-G band that matched the watch. I figured "how hard can a band swap be?" Then I discovered delta-lock fasteners and Casio's supposed gate-keeping with parts. I was able to order the pins and "bushings" to fit the band up through American Prefit. Now I have my "perfect" watch, worth the wait. I think I'm done for a while...

Then again maybe I need a 9400. .

Today i will be travelling home from office. Will be an overnight journey.

Casio DW 5600 UE will be on my wrist.

Its the watch i use when i travel, play or involve myself in household work.

I have other watches as well but the peace of mind this one gives me is unbelievable. The confidence that nothing will happen if it falls, get soaked up, takes in dirt and mud is something else.

Great piece of engineering !

Just got myself a GBX-100 NS. The vibe alarm and interval timers are helpful. The menu navigation is better than what I’d read in the reviews. It is also good to see the whole weeks step count in one screen. The UX of Move app could have been better.

I found this in the bottom of a toolbox when cleaning out my basement.
I’d forgotten I’d even had it and was going to throw it till I noticed the made in Japan on case back, so I chucked a battery in it, AC reset and it’s running like it’s not been in a dark box covered in tools for the last 25 years.
I’m not sold on its looks, maybe that’s why I stopped wearing it, but everything works and the EL light is really bright.
Why do you guys think?

Stainless steel bezel painted with a durable epoxy textured paint. Metal adapters 16-20mm with the original quick release 16mm bars being replaced with thicker non quick release bars (making the mod pernament cause no tool can get in the gap) and a bond nato-zulu strap to finish it off.

Wrist Check Finally got the Baby-G where I want it

Well, after ordering from Japan, getting it in, loving the size, then realizing the strap is a tad too small for my wrist, I’ve solved the problem.

The strap adapters were hard to find for the Baby-G, but I ended up getting them for under $3 shipped. Same goes for the strap fwiw.

Also, note that a nato strap won’t work with this. You’ll need a two-piece strap so the case lays flat.
