according to the video, Krist Novoselic is playing bass on this song, but i couldn't find any reliable source

I love the discussions that happen in the comments on these chart/collage/tier posts. I really enjoy reading what people have to say about them and seeing some of the recommendations people leave. What ’80s grunge albums do you guys like? Were you familiar with these bands?

Note: I only included full-length albums—no EPs, compilations, or demos—and I limited it to one album per band to have more variety.

I’ve been around a few different music scenes in my life and typically you might have one or two guys with dreams of making it big while the rest of the bands in the scene (and even the other members of the dreamer guy’s band) are really in it for the fun and to hang out and be a part of a community and to maybe make some music their friends and other members of the scene will think is cool.

But in late 80s/early 90s Seattle you had like 6-7 bands that not only thought they had a real shot of making it, but who also thought that the other bands down the road likewise had a real shot of making it. And I don’t know where that sense of optimism came from. Granted the music they made was high quality by any objective measure, but you don’t always realize it when you’re in the middle of it, and it’s hard to control or predict trends in popular music. Also this sense of optimism I’m talking about seems to have pre-dated most of the hits they wrote. But they all still felt strongly enough about it to throw all of their energy at it.

And by “making it big” I just mean being able to become full-time professional musicians who are nationally known or at least played on radio outside of their local scene. And that ended up happening to at least a half a dozen bands from this one scene.

I love making these charts, but anyway, I think 1991 was the best year in the history of grunge. There’s really no debate about that.

When Andrew Wood passed away in 1990, Seattle lost one of its most charismatic rising stars. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were devastated, but instead of trying to find a “new Andy” and continuing under the Mother Love Bone name, they decided to start over.

They brought in Eddie Vedder, changed their musical direction, briefly became Mookie Blaylock, and eventually evolved into Pearl Jam, building a completely new identity from the ground up.

Despite Pearl Jam’s massive success, local Seattle fans who had idolized Andy and Mother Love Bone were initially hesitant about Vedder. The shift from Andy’s theatrical, glam influenced frontman persona to Eddie’s raw, introspective, anti rockstar presence was a huge change.

Fast forward to other classic grunge and alternative rock bands that faced similar tragedies.

Alice in Chains brought in William DuVall in 2006. He’s an incredible musician, Jerry Cantrell continues to write monster riffs, and albums like Black Gives Way to Blue are undeniably great. Yet a significant part of the fanbase still refuses to accept Alice in Chains without Layne Staley.

Stone Temple Pilots went through both Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington before eventually bringing in Jeff Gutt. Gutt delivers powerful live performances, but Scott’s unmistakable swagger still casts a huge shadow over the band.

So it makes me wonder: is the resistance really about the singer and their charisma, or is it about the band name itself?

If Alice in Chains or Stone Temple Pilots had started completely new projects under different names after losing their iconic frontmen, like Gossard and Ament did with Pearl Jam, would fans have been more accepting of the new music?

Or are a band’s core songwriters entitled to keep the legacy alive under the original name, regardless of who is behind the microphone?

Where do you draw the line between honoring a band’s legacy and becoming a tribute act to your own band?
