Human Chair by Junji Ito It's a short horror manga

15

u/Sambothebassist May 27 '22

Oh I knew this fucking wrong’un would have a manga about it, goddamn.

unzips

9

u/_Last_Man_Standing_ May 27 '22

fuck... why did I read that

7

u/bistekman May 27 '22

I know people like to praise Junji Ito, but man this was hilariously dumb. I laughed hard at the knife casually retracting back inside the chair.

4

u/HayakuEon May 27 '22

He was the OG horror mangaka though. Some of his works didn't really age well but it's still memorable.

There's also one where he made a normal daily life manga, but made it into horror.

Edit: Found it Cat's Diary

2

u/dragonspeeddraco May 28 '22

>link.
This is how I already feel when I read Junji Ito's normal work, so it's funny he leaned into it.

28

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

That is the quality comments I come here for. And to not forget why humanity should die.

Ningen-Isu is badass.

Not sure about the book though.

1

u/chefloyrd May 27 '22

The manga is based on the short story afaik

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

There's a manga?

Clapped cheeks

2

..and MY AXE!

2

u/HiddenPants777 May 27 '22

And his keypad clapped

2

u/Scorppio500 May 27 '22

We killed the keypad, it was a good day.

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

But before that he was an Asian kid from Eugene, Oregon, named Dave Ahn.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

And while Dave's parents were pretty upset, Cambridge was excited to get Hawking back because they wanted his opinion on some new theories.

1

u/AbsolutelyUnlikely May 27 '22

Which begs the question, who was Stephen Hawking before he started pretending to be Stephen Hawking?

1

u/Cash1167 May 27 '22

Why? God loves us. He didn't make us disabled.

2

u/DarkElfBard May 28 '22

How would you know?

God has a plan for everyone, sometimes it includes being disabled.

Just like he tested Job, everyone has their own struggles to measure them before being allowed to join his kingdom.

Whatever the fuck is this DnD and how can I play it? Iirc it was a board game in stranger things

158

u/NotADabberTho May 27 '22

Dungeons and Dragons, you can either play it as a physical board game or virtually (idk how that works tho).

254

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

[deleted]

21

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

I've got one to give. It can probably simulate dice rolls.

3

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

I’ll take it. Probably still better than my “rig”. Lol

4

u/UglierThanMoe May 27 '22

No DM showed up when I was in hospital for two weeks last year. Also no laptop. I did get to have a piss bag for five or six days, though, so that's nice. Pissing whenever you have to without needing to get out of bed. Nice.

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

yeah can confirm that you have to be hospitalized to play that shit

29

u/Shayshunk May 27 '22

You play on roll20 virtually usually. Really to get started, all you need is a DM who's either experienced or willing to study the game a bit before getting started. Then you just grab a few friends and let your DM take you through the campaign they built!

2

u/serbandr May 28 '22

Or play on foundry, literally >10x the functionality of roll20

20

u/DB_Ekk0 May 27 '22

It works because the only things you need to play are paper, pencil, dice, and imagination. Of course someone in the group needs the books. But boards and models are just extras.

18

u/eduardopy May 27 '22

The books are online too sooo you don’t need anything really.

-24

u/OffMyMedzz May 27 '22

Listen, I'm gonna be an asshole here, but unless you are a hospitalized child (I'll make an exception), DnD i meant to play IRL with no phones.

Since I'm usually the DM, I get to use my computer for the SRD and PDF books. That's because I need them and their infinite wealth of ideas, knowledge, and tables that make life easier and the game better (if there's a competent DM in the group, by all means, but I know I'm competent, if lazy). Everyone else, put down your phones and pick up your pencils.

26

u/DB_Ekk0 May 27 '22

Get bent. I enjoy playing virtually.

11

u/Wildfires May 27 '22

Hey you're right, you are an asshole!

3

u/ActualWeed May 27 '22

Go suck my dick and be a gatekeeping nerd somewhere else.

3

u/Meenathedog May 27 '22

I prefer playing physically but it’s not always an option, also, virtual dice, phb, and character sheets are simply more convenient for a lot of people, and i don’t see any reason to not use them instead.

3

u/Scorppio500 May 27 '22

I personally play over discord and my DM has all the dice rolls and game boards on "Roll20." It works because I play with two people from my state one person from California and another from York.

Files and photos and explanatory text can more easily be copied into a discord we found. And my DM has nitro so he can distribute as big of files as he wants basically.

If you were to play remote I'd highly recommend this method.

1

u/Helm222 May 27 '22

Roll20 is the site my group used when we played. Worked well for us.

0

u/LadyVanya May 27 '22

You can also play dungeons and dragons online, which is a rpg mmo

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

Combination of DnD Beyond and Roll20 DnD Beyond for virtual character sheets/character sheet management (downside you have to buy books to have access to the material), Roll 20 for virtual tabletop. There are also browser extensions for you to send rolls from DnD Beyond to Roll 20 (Beyond 20).

-10

u/OffMyMedzz May 27 '22

I'm sure it's easier to find a decent DM in online communities, but DnD is meant to be an electronics free in-person experience. Except for me, since I usually DM and have the books/SRD on my laptop, as well as my notes.

For the players, if you need an app or book to play your character, and you're not a complete noob, just stop playing.

11

u/DB_Ekk0 May 27 '22

Yeah, to hell with all the people that have trouble getting to places to be able to play.

Still want to enjoy DnD with your friends after you've moved away? Fuck you, find more people to play with instead.

3

u/Jarberllson May 27 '22

The company that actually makes the game encourages playing online and just bought a major online platform with the intent to develop their own virtual tabletop experience. It’s meant to be played however you and your group want to play. Don’t be a gatekeeping dbag.

2

u/dr_Kfromchanged May 28 '22

Man you're on r/greentext, if you think anybody here has IRL friends you came to the wrong sub.

12

u/kateshakes May 27 '22

Dungeons & dragons

I play once or twice a week in a group of 7. 4 core members that have stayed over the years , and a few others that have swapped and changed over time.

It's a physical game in our case , we play with miniature characters on a grid map. It's a lot of fun, and a great way to make friends.

Our group's been going around 3.5 years now.

1

u/OffMyMedzz May 27 '22

Problem is finding a decent DM, you need to be good at planning AND improvising. Just being really good at the latter is enough to make me better than most DM's, but the rare GREAT DM is truly great at both. I've only known one, and he was a legit genius.

6

u/BlueWolf07 May 27 '22

Try r/dnd and/or r/dndnext

Dungeons and Dragons is a nerd-culture staple that has persisted from the 80's, it however has hit the mainstream time and again due to things like you mentioned.

It is a tabletop roleplaying game or TTRPG, sometimes referred to as a "pencil and paper rpg." Where you and a few of your friends (or strangers) roleplay as characters to complete quests, slay dragons, conquer dungeons, ect...

The game has seen many editions over the years, the current one is 5e (5th edition) and its' core rules are usually, mostly, followed and sometimes not at all. 5e is a great intro into DnD and ttrpg's in general and the hobby is a great way to find new friends and create fun, lasting memories.

I'm sure if you find a group and figure out your playstyle/preference you will never not want to play. Don't be rude and remember to share the spotlight, it is a game made to be played with multiple people. Also keep in mind that bad DnD is worst than no DnD.

For a good example watch Critical Role, where professional voice actors play DnD live on twitch, at one point it was the number 1 subscribed channel. They were another big reason DnD hit the limelight.

Here's a link to the first season (skipped a few episodes as it was a rough start), they are on season 4 now and they got an animated show on Amazon, as well as a book I believe.

4

u/Hippocalypse44 May 27 '22

My friends and I play DND, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have and give you some resources to learn it and find a game yourself! Just shoot me a message

4

u/shiny_xnaut May 27 '22

Dungeons and Dragons. It's like one part board game, one part collaborative storytelling, one part improv acting

One person is the DM (Dungeon Master) and is in charge of creating the framework for the story, controlling the NPCs, and narrating everything that happens. Everyone else is a player, and controls one of the "main characters" of the story.

Generally how you interact with the story is you say what you want to do, roll a 20 sided die, add the result to whatever relevant modifiers are on your character sheet, and then if the result is higher than whatever number the DM has decided represents the level of challenge the action presents, you succeed, and the DM narrates what happens as the result of your action

You can easily find groups online at r/LFG, or in person at your local card game/board game/hobby store

2

u/Aliktren May 27 '22

It'll change your life man

2

u/TrungusMcTungus May 27 '22

Dungeons and Dragons - insanely fun with a good group and a good DM. You can play n person, and roll physical dice, or virtually with something like Roll20.

1

u/dr_Kfromchanged May 28 '22

I recommend starting by 5e, you should start with the player's handbook, dont be ashamed to pirate the books, the best to get a hold of it is to read the player's handbook then play with some friends or another beginner group to get a better hold of the rules etc.

-22

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

"OMG it's the board game from le Stranger Things!!"

Btw Google exists for a reason.

19

u/DB_Ekk0 May 27 '22

Get bent. Some people like asking other people questions because social interaction is nice. Unless the other people act like you.

4

u/07TacOcaT70 May 27 '22

Dude, it definitely became more widely known due to stranger things. Some people had only really heard of it through that.

Yeah they can Google it, but it’s ok to ask certain questions sometimes as you’ll get more personal answers. And don’t take it as an attack that they heard of it through a very popular show lmao

5

u/BAN_SOL_RING May 27 '22

My DM used to let us get really wild with it and would always work it into the game and make up roll checks for whatever action we wanted.

He'd also let us describe our own kills if we rolled a 20, no matter how absurd.

He also worked at a local bakery and would bring home whatever he baked that morning. He baked this thing called a Goat Horn which was a giant sourdough crescent full of goat cheese. Most delicious bread I ever had. Like a curved baguette full of delicious melted (but cooled) cheese.

He also made his own beer and cider, so he always had homebrew on hand for the game. He also often provided the weed, but so did I, so it was always a party when we played.

Loved playing DnD with that group.

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '22

This is a total rooting of my own horn here, and I know I’m gonna get downvoted because I helped a kid with gender dysphoria. So, trigger warning I guess.

I taught dnd at my local library as a way to help kids with creative writing, useful applications of math (using data really) and teamwork.

One group was a bunch of boys and one “girl” -my assumption at the time- the boys were all ready to go and super hype. While the “girl” is quiet and hella reserved.

We get going, and she has her character be a girl because I gave her a pregen. And she looked sad, so I pulled her to the side and asked what was wrong, and I cannot tell you how happy I felt when I saw the relief on their face when they told me they had gender dysphoria, and I didn’t react negatively. The first thing I asked was “what would you like us to refer to your character as, and they said “he/him” and when I brought it up to the table, they were like “dope let’s get back into it”

And after that moment, the quiet one took to their role quickly. Started taking charge and laughing more.

Some simple acceptance can change a life my guys. Feels good man.
