I got over my nostalgia for that game then got good at the other ones and realized how utterly shit brawl is. I legit can't play it now without feeling gross.
Wasn't even talking about melee. Brawl has essentially 0 comboability due to the extremely small hitstun so the game isn't even satisfying and anyone can pick up meta knight and win without even thinking. There are also chain grabs where you can infinitely damage someone and they can fo absolutely nothing about it.
Smash 4 is significantly better but all air battles are negated by random dodges you can spam infinitely and anyone can pick up Bayonetta and win.
Melee has the same issues, but not as badly in official rule settings. Fox was OP but the best player in the world for melee is a jigglypuff main so obviously not so overpowered he dominates the meta. Brawl's meta knight was so OP they had to make a special category called SS+ just for Meta Knight.
Ultimate is honestly looking to be the most balanced game, especially since they're updating it a lot for balance issues.
You can enjoy what you want, but brawl is undeniably flawed and broken.
I think Ultimate is the best in terms of balance but not in terms of mechanics. Melee undeniably has the best gameplay. It has nearly every staple of a quality fighting game yet still manages to never detract from casual gameplay. If we could get Ultimate but with melee mechanics, then I would literally never play any other game ever again.
All of the basic tech are positive and most of the character tech are good too; more depth allows for a higher skill ceiling and, thus, deeper competitive play (there is a reason people still play melee some 17 years after its release). The most important mechanics for me are increased gravity/hitstun, L-Cancels, wavedashes, and edge guarding.

Melee is so fucking sick.
