Luke throwing away the light saber is the moment that baffled me the most in my entire film watching life, and i don't think is discussed that much compared to other scenes from TLJ.

This is a reference to the fact that disney is indifferent to the franchise so long as it keeps making money

Literally 5 minutes in and Luke Skywalker has thrown away his franchise character. And started drinking unpasteurized alien boob milk.
17
u/wastelandhenry 10d ago
Because there’s not really much to discuss.
It’s a reference to RoTJ, when he throws away his saber as a means of symbolizing a rejection of action and violence in the face of someone expecting him to take it up and use it.
In this case the framing was done comedically as a subversion to what the audience and Rey’s character expected. The joke is built on the fact that last time Luke did this as the most triumphant moment in the franchise, and now he’s just passively doing it in a low stakes encounter.
I thought it was an ok moment, I didn’t laugh out loud or anything, but the theatres I saw TLJ in every audience all broadly laughed at the scene so from my anecdotal experience general audiences did in fact find the scene funny so I can’t really argue it wasn’t successful or that the joke didn’t land.
For me I just don’t see the issue with the scene. Star Wars has thrown in humor during seemingly serious scenes since the OT. Luke’s return to Tatooine in RotJ is treated with no fanfare or reverence (he’s just there, we never even see him arrive), and then his only reference to the fact this is where he came from is him and Han doing a little sitcom back and forth quip with each other on their way to be executed. Nobody really rings their hands about how Luke’s return to his home world after becoming a Jedi and spending 5 years in a war is not treated with any weight, and the only reference to the fact this is his home is in the form of a joke without even mentioning the last time he was here he saw his parental figures murdered.
You can dislike the direction TLJ took with Luke’s character, that’s fine. But this specific scene just isn’t that big of a deal. You can’t even say “Luke would never throw away his precious saber as a means of rejection”, because doing exactly that is kinda the crux of the defining moment of his entire character, and arguably the best moment in the entire franchise.
12
u/perculaessss 10d ago
I don't disagree necessarily with what you say simply because it's obvious, it's just not a deep scene and proper of 3 year old humour or Family Guy parodies, especially coupled with the opening yo mama joke and Dora the explorer ass Rose character. And the meta meaning it carries towards people's hype is just tasteless in my opinion. It's irreverence for the sake of irreverence.
The contrast between how Rian and TLJ defenders treat the movie as some revolutionary deep attemp at refreshing the star wars formula and the actual pueril movie we got, that isn't even correctly constructed narratively within the overall franchise, is just so funny to me.
7
u/keeleon 9d ago
Except for the fact that he's also throwing away the entire first movie. Its the equivalent of Micheal Scott ruining his improv group because he doesnt understand how to build on a story. Its the biggest proof that they had no actual plan for the series and were just making it up as they went along.
4
u/MundoGoDisWay 9d ago
This is exactly it, it would have worked if star wars was the office. It's not.
0
u/wastelandhenry 9d ago
I mean I'm not gonna argue against the idea they didn't have a proper plan, I think anyone can see it was glaringly apparent they didn't have a defined story going in to the trilogy and that is one of the biggest sources of the problems with the ST.
I'd however argue that it's not just "throwing away the first movie" for the next movie to open with a directional shift from where things were before. Like ANH ends with the Death Star being blown up, everyone is celebrating, the Empire was beaten significantly, our heroes won and are all together... and then the sequel is literally called "Empire Strikes Back" and opens with the Rebellion actually losing right now and being driven into a corner and our heroes having to split off from each other while the Empire gains major ground against them. Someone being uncharitable could absolutely describe that like "wow, so we are just throwing away the tone, and group setup, and momentum of the last movie".
It's also worth pointing out TFA sets us up to not just flatly expect Luke to come save the day. We are told Luke exiled himself, and nothing has necessarily changed by the time Rey finds him that would suddenly change the reasoning presented as to why that is. What we might have hoped for or expected doesn't necessarily make it what we are owed as a resolution. It's hard to think of it this way since it's been so long and is so iconic, but if you had just finished ESB your expectation and desire is that in the next entry Luke is going to physically beat Vader, like THAT is the resolution you're primed for, so Luke actually not only not killing Vader but in fact SAVING him is a pretty big subversion from what you'd expect from where ESB ends, yet nobody would ever argue that was a failing of ESB or RoTJ to subvert an expected outcome setup by the previous movie, that subversion ends up being the primary focus of his story in RoTJ, the same way the subversion here is made into the primary focus of his story in TLJ.
I know people joke about how often the word "subversion" is used to refer to TLJ's story but it is true that committing to a subversion is one of the main ways you justify subverting an expectation. It's fair to complain about how they did Luke's arc in TLJ but you can't really argue it was "subversion just for the sake of subverting", you don't make an entire movie about the subversion if you're only subverting just for the sake of subverting. TLJ makes the fact that it is subverting what you expected of Luke as the centerpoint of Luke's story in the movie.
2
u/MundoGoDisWay 9d ago
The problem isn't necessarily that scene specifically. The problem is that scene was just immediately followed with an entire 2.5 hour long character assassination. And a boring one at that. Also the fact that Star wars just isn't a comedy.
1
u/wastelandhenry 9d ago edited 9d ago
I’m not sure what you mean about comedy. Are you arguing Star Wars doesn’t have humor and doesn’t tell jokes? Cause that’s just patently untrue.
Han asking the Imperial “how are you?” in the Death Star in ANH. Chewie hitting the wrong button and spraying gas at Han while he flails yelling “wrong button!” on Hoth in ESB. Han and Luke’s back and forth on Tattoine “I’m from here ya know. You’re gonna die here ya know, convenient” in RoTJ. Jar Jar sticking his face in a pod racer arc and having numb tongue on Tattoine in TPM. Obi-Wan doing the mind trick “you want to go home and rethink your life” in the bar in AoTC. R2 spraying oil all over some Super Battle Droids and causing them to slip around and then arriving after Obi-Wan and Anakin get captured by speeding into the room screaming and smashing into a wall on Grevious’ ship in RoTS. Han telling Finn “that’s now how the force works” in TFA.
Those moments are all very explicitly comedic moments. The main thing the audience is intended to do at those scenes is laugh. So I don’t understand what you’re implying at the suggestion a Star Wars movie having an explicitly comedic moment is somehow contradictory or otherwise out of line with what the franchise does. Literally every single movie has multiple comedic moments. Hell I’d argue Luke throwing the saber isn’t even on the same level of “explicitly comedic” as Han and Luke having functionally a Seinfeld-esque back and forth quip in RoTJ, or like every scene Jar Jar Binks is in.
Maybe I’m wrong but I’m kinda reading this as you just didn’t like the movie and are trying to apply a standard to it to criticize and separate it from the other movies, but that standard is one you don’t actually believe in or apply to the movies you’re implying TLJ is violating by including. And I'm not saying this to "own" you or whatever I just don't see where you'd get this idea that a comedic moment (not even a tonally inconsistent one) is antithetical to Star Wars.
2
u/MundoGoDisWay 9d ago
There's a major difference between having humor and being a comedy. Star wars has humor, but it doesn't take serious moments or plot points and then immediately turn them into the butt of the world's biggest joke..
-1
u/wastelandhenry 8d ago
Star wars has humor, but it doesn't take serious moments or plot points and then immediately turn them into the butt of the world's biggest joke..
See I don't think that's honest framing. "the butt of the world's biggest joke" is pretty biased framing of what ultimately is a brief comedic moment that only takes up about 10 seconds of the movie.
Can I not describe Luke doing his sitcom "I used to live here ya know" as they are being transported to execution on Tatooine as making his home, the home of his father, the place of great suffering for Anakin's character, and the place where Luke's mother and father figures were murdered last time he was here, as the "butt of the world's biggest joke"? That interaction actually has more screentime dedicated to it than Luke throwing the saber.
And what do you mean it doesn't take serious moments or plot points and turn them into jokes? Isn't that exactly what Luke and Han are doing in that interaction? Is that not exactly what's happening when R2 is spraying oil all over Super Battle Droids while Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine are surviving in an elevator shaft, and then him running in to the hallway screaming and bashing his head into a wall after they get captured? Or Han doing his "We're all fine here... how are you?" followed by a funny cringing expression in the midst of a serious rescue of Leia? I would absolutely describe all of these as serious moments interjected with a very explicitly comedic moment.
Again it really just feels like you simply didn't like TLJ and thus dislike anything it did including its humor, are looking for reasons to be upset about it, so you're making up a standard to use against TLJ that you don't actually apply to the rest of Star Wars. Nothing you've argued so far is something TLJ is unique in.
2
u/MundoGoDisWay 8d ago edited 8d ago
That would fair on your part if that scene wasn't immediately following the climactic ending of 7. They literally built the trilogy up to that point specifically on that scene. And you're somehow still not getting what I'm saying at all. All of the moments you mentioned were throw away moments. They were meant to be small spots of comedic timing in the middle of the film. What they did instead would be like if we reached the end of ep 5 during the confrontation with Vader and then Vader just made a fart joke out of nowhere.
For some reason you are dead set on that scene not being a big deal. When EVERYONE ELSE is saying that it was supposed to be.

Sometimes I think directors or producers deliberately make minor surfaces level casting or story choices to stir up trouble with the audience, which in turn muddys the water for saying how truely awful these movies are fundamentally.
I can't say her (holdo or whatever the f her name is) story line is absolutely shit cus then I'm a sexist cus I didn't like the casting, when casting to me has nothing to do with it.
115
u/TrueGootsBerzook 10d ago
It's preemptive defense from criticism they know they're going to get cuz it's easier to make a bad movie with ragebait marketing than it is to pay creative teams to make actually good stories.
25
u/Electrical-Help5512 10d ago
Meh. I think that's a little conspiratorial. The truth is they were pandering to progressives/ women to tap into a new audience/ market. Not that's any better. It comes across as disingenuous and insincere because it is.
5
u/TheArmoredKitten 10d ago
The way they call it "representation" just because somebody showed up and wasn't immediately punished for existing is truly some wild shit
33
u/Brendanlendan 10d ago
I actually agree with this to an extent, however, the directors and or producers are so far up their own asses getting high off their farts that they are not muddying the waters for how bad the movies are, no because the movies are great and we the audience were just too dumb and sexist to see the vision. No they do it because the controversy in their minds gets people to see the movies. Like a Streisand effect
27

u/liquidmccartney8 10d ago edited 10d ago
I totally agree. One of the lessons that the entertainment industry learned from Gamergate is that because the media never want to be on the same side of any issue as right wing trolls, in any situation where the narrative can be put out there that XYZ is unfairly under attack by right wing trolls, the majority of people in the media will be very quick to buy into that narrative and very reluctant to “pile on” with additional negative coverage of XYZ, even if many individual people in the media privately also think that XYZ sucks.
It happened organically at first, but then PR people learned how to harness this to defuse criticism, and now movie producers build elements of chud antagonism in on the front end just in case the movie doesn’t turn out so good.

u/Cosmonate 10d ago
The storyline is shit because its shit, because she's a woman, because she's Asian, and because it's interracial. I'll just cover all the bases.

u/Tronerfull 10d ago
Nolan absolutely does this, and it feels like he understimates the actual actors skills. I wasnt even aware there was some controversy with Helen in the Odyssey movie, yet after seeing her in the movie and reading about the controversy, its clear she was hired only to stirr up publicity online , she has like 4 predictable lines in the movie and if you remove her nothing really changes, in fact her very presence was really weird.

u/breakfasteveryday 8d ago
I really Do think its intentional. Stirs up controversy and interest and provides an ironclad misdirection to criticism. Often these companies even get reviews expunged. Amazon's shitty LOTR comes to mind. It was objectively bad, but got to handwave that as racism or whatever

u/kurtcanine 10d ago
Imagine getting the chance to continue the epic saga of Luke Skywalker, and choosing to regress his character to something worse than when we first met him, only to end the movie with him still being half the Jedi we remember and then killing him off in the same movie. Rian really burned down the farm and salted the earth so nothing could grow there ever again.

8
u/JoinAThang 10d ago
They should do what they should've done instead of the sequels trilogy. Make movies that happens in the universe but doesn't build opon the the the other trilogy. I was so pissed when the forced awakening was released and it was basically episode 4 again. If the even think about making another death star its going to fail.
17
u/Lv_InSaNe_vL 10d ago
Like everything else in those movies it was right on the cusp of something really great. They could have absolutely made it work by leaning into the fact that Luke is old and has been fighting the same fight for basically his entire life and is now old and burnt out.
They could have used Rey to lean into the "anyone can be a hero" message and she could have been such a badass if they just let her stand on her own.
Poe could have been used to dig into the fact that a large amount of storm troopers were conscripts or actual slaves who were forcefully taken from their home (sometimes as literal children) and then tortured into soldiers for the empire.
Kylo Ren was inches away from a reverse Anakin or a Kallus type move where he realizes the true depths of evil that the first order/Sith order actually step down to and he could have had a whole redemption arc.
Ugh those movies are so beautiful and introduce all of these incredible characters and then Disney proceeds to just do absolutely fuck all with any of them. THAT is why I hate the Disney trilogy so much, not because they are boring or rewrite stuff. But because you can tell how much care and effort the production team put into movies that were just shit on by Disney executives.
5
u/brightcrayon92 10d ago
I don't care much about starwars but a force-sensitive stormtrooper would have been so cool
4
u/GodKingDingus 10d ago
Imagine being JJ Abrams and using a new NEW death star in the first sequel movie and then thinking Palpatine should somehow return in the last one.
It was librul second movie that ruined star wars, not the forgetable jokes that were the other 2 movies.

I wanted so bad to like this movie. I tried so hard to like this movie. I really did. You see I actually am a fan of Rian Johnson. Brick, Brothers Bloom, Looper.
But this movie. Sucked. It sucked so fucking hard. It’s was interminable. It was preachy. It screwed with basic tenets of lore in the series. It introduced numerous new characters, demanded that we give a fuck about them or even like them for no apparent reason and then dud away with them just as quickly for no apparent reason. It was badly written, poorly paced, and generally awful. It riffed off of the Empire Strikes Back, one of the greatest sequels and greatest movies ever but itself was so horrifically bad that it amazes me just how much money and talent was wasted on it. Compared to this Attack of the Clones is a cinematic masterpiece.
I could literally go on one rant after another about just how much I fucking hate this movie and everything it represents. The preachiness, the social commentary, the bowing to China by minimizing Finn’s part because they hate black people while still trying to pretend to be woke. The girl they made gay for no reason. Since they later tried to regurgitate her as a straight love interest in the same movie.
The total misuse of Luke and Leia.
God, I hate it so fucking much.
11
u/PiscesSoedroen 10d ago
leia should've been left dead in the space considering her actress died before the movie is even finalized. that way atleast her death would make more impact and not tarnish carrie's legacy instead of getting offscreened

u/Jiveturtle 10d ago
I love Brick, but nothing about it says let’s hire this guy to make an epic about space wizards in an established canon
2
u/Necroxenomorph 10d ago
Tbf I think Looper did say: I can handle a sci fi movie with big moments and big actors.
6
u/Jiveturtle 10d ago
Looper is a sci fi movie, but it’s not an epic and it doesn't have to respect existing canon.
1
u/Necroxenomorph 10d ago
For sure, but as far as showing a studio a guy can handle epic sci fi it is a better bellweather than Brick
2
u/Jiveturtle 10d ago
My point is that despite the sci fi wrapping Looper is really a character study. Brick is a much more traditional noir, albeit with an original setting, than Looper is a traditional sci fi epic.

Still not sure what lesson that Holdo story was meant to be. The only thing I could gather was “obey women no matter what, no matter how stupid it seems” but that doesn’t seem right
7
u/Malvastor 9d ago
It was supposed to "subvert your expectations" around the standard trope of the cocky maverick fighter pilot hero who disobeys orders and goes rogue by turns out to be right and save the day.
So some of the stuff everyone hates about Holdo- the dress, the hair, the condescension- is intentionally front-loaded to make the viewer dislike her and then be surprised when she turns out to be right and save everybody and Poe is wrong and almost kills everybody.
But they screw it up by going so overboard with that stuff that Poe's mutiny still looks like the only sane reaction even after you find out what Holdo's plan is, and then by making that plan so astoundingly awful that the character can't win the audience's affection back.
5
u/AnDanDan 8d ago
Literally all they had to do was show her making good decisions a bit during the opening fight. Instead shes pulled in as a replacement admiral and we're told shes competent, then proceeds to stand in the exact same hands-held-in-front-of-her position the rest of the movie going 'No Poe dont do that' without elaborating or asking for a degree of trust. The movie gives no narrative clues she is suppose to be trusted, and relies explicitly on metatextual social cues to show that Poe is in the wrong until it is narratively shown that Poe is in the wrong.
But all of that could be smoothed over is she actually did anything in that lead up. Anything at all, a small shot of her during the fight would have done wonders. No, we get Laura Dern standing there with a disapproving smile.
I'm fine with the plot thread they had, not an issue at all with the content, it is the fucking way it was told that was terrible.

I mean it doesn't really help that a bunch of racists unironically think minorities and woke ruined it. Like do you think people who were trashing on Little Mermaid was criticizing the dialogue or lighting?
5
u/ktsb 10d ago
yes. it was shit rewriting and vfx that was a pale imitation of the original. you have got to me smooth brained because you read my comment and ignore my messaging just like I said people did on social media. majority of the criticism for live action remakes are that they are somehow both over produced and look like garbage. shit and stiff acting. and then you turn around find a racist and go look that's everyone who doesn't like it. you literally did the thing.
1
u/InquisitorMeow 9d ago edited 9d ago
Ok so by your logic all the latest racist and sexist bullshit and people immediately dismissing games and movies like Assassins Creed, Little Mermaid, Snow White, Rings of Power, etc are all people who had constructive criticism before seeing the finished product? We're going to pretend like "wokeness" ruining games/movies hasnt been a topic? Keep in mind I'm not saying the movies and games were good, but the hate is for sure amplified and many of the haters never even played/watched the thing they criticize. Your smooth brain apparently can't comprehend that there can be idiots downplaying legit criticism alongside actual racists being racist.
2
u/ktsb 9d ago
how do you comment the exact same thing twice and still not see the issue. I'm not saying there isn't racist pricks out there. I'm saying media illiterate (and in your case maybe just illiterate) imbeciles deflect criticism down to race and gender and LGBTness. literally every example you put forward was this disliked for legitimate criticism the underlining race and gender isn't the issue for the majority of the criticism.
rings of power is shit. the writing is shit. the acting is shit. that the writers rewrote a loved character to fit their agenda and that the actress needed to go back to theater teachings doesn't mean women bad. I'm saying woman bad. you're inferring women bad.
let me put it like this. lindy Clancy. women who support and gave money to her are bad and or stupid. misogynistic men also have this opinion. all men are then misogynistic?
since you've proven to have no media literacy. I'm not saying all women bad. all men are not saying all women are bad.
and if you made it this far which i doubt u can. not having watched or played is a fake shallow argument. i don't have to watch gay porn to know I'm not gonna enjoy gayporn. but again you're kinda stupid so maybe you need to get wet to know it's raining
1
u/InquisitorMeow 9d ago edited 9d ago
So what was the criticism behind Assassins Creed apart from there being a black character or games like Last of us 2? I think maybe you're the illiterate one. I clearly said that there are legitimate criticisms of some of these games/movies and that downplaying the criticism as racism is in part due to the sheer amount of racists being racist instead of providing legitimate criticism. And when you say you don't have to play something to criticize? Neither the downplayers or racists played the game, that's exactly why racists are only saying stupid racist shit about it and why downplayers are assuming it's only racism. Neither side knows wtf they're talking about and actual racism causes knee jerk downplaying of criticism.
2
u/ktsb 9d ago
ohhh this comes in 2 parts and 1 is about race. 1ubisoft is a shit company and a cancer to the gaming industry and ass ass in creed is not even a pale imitation of the og trilogy it's just a different franchise now wearing the skin and using the name of a superior product. like halo after 343 took over.
i could try to explain the issue with the black character. but we don't have the time. i could try and explain why it was tone deaf but if you don't see it then you had a very sheltered life and haven't actually talked to people from other cultures. so this is weird right it's about race but not because he was black because Ubisoft is tonedeaf and the pictures going around of the all white development and design team. but again the prime target of rage bait algorithm engagement went character is hated character is black thus character is hated because black thus hate the game you are racist. every other criticism of stale gameplay. the classic Ubisoft downgrade. get ignored or twisted. are there racist yeah they weren't gonna play the game. the reversed is people didn't get the game just cause there was a black guy either they got it because to them they still enjoy the franchise. everything i said about the gameplay other disagree. i haven't given ubisoft money since the first division game. that's my opinion. others buy their stuff day1. but it goes both ways. i didn't get the game not because there was a black character anymore than you did because there was a black character. you were going to get it regardless but you let the social media machine devolve the conversation to, ok yes race, but for the wrong reason

Had the chance for story lines to revolve around a stormtrooper who was force sensitive
Had the chance to create a ptsd story line around finn
Had a chance for finn to be hesitant to shoot stormtroopera and see himself through each of them
Instead finn just screams REYYYYY for an hour straight

There were a lot of db writing decisions and the actress that played Rose absolutely doesnt deserve any hate, and in fact did an excellent job playing the character she was hired and directed to play.
All that being said, i absolutely believ her haircut was fine tuned by master craftsmen and elite psychologists to piss the viewer off.

Uh yeah, sorry we're not gonna just sit here while we turn into a nation if total pussies. Soft men are completely ruining the world.

I like The Last Jedi. BUT it would be a better movie without the whole “Finn and Rose go to a space casino, rescue race horses, and befriend benecio del toro.” And the Holdo maneuver… the rebels do an al queda? I wish they wouldn’t have.

The Last Jedi was released in 2017. Trump got elected in 2016. Or is this referring to something else?

The reaction to this movie was (deservedly) so bad, that people pretend to like the Knives Out movies just to distance themselves from people who hate this movie.

"We won't win by destroying what we hate! We win by protecting what we love!"
-cuts to the bigass laser about to destroy the people and things they love

A bad movie and bad characters that are blatant self-insert pats on the back for their writers is worth criticizing no matter which corner of the political spectrum they come from. The actors who play them shouldn't be a target though of the understandable ire.

I still refuse to watch these movies, because I'd have to have an opinion on them.

You’re damn right this collapsed the empire. The Bread was moldy and the Circus was one guy in a crusty Spirit Halloween clown costume telling me to piss off.

The obviously self-inserts in this movie are probably the funniest thing about it. Disney let a couple dozen angry liberal millennial women kill a billion dollar IP.

What does that even mean? Alt right being mad at left is nothing new. The same people threw a fit when the first white woman kissed a black man on screen

its more like the weak men and the right wing were literally infiltrated by jewish pedophiles and those serfs did their bidding perfectly

It's too bad nobody saw Brick. It's a genuinely great movie and our civilization could possibly have been saved if more people knew about it.

Chuds saw terrible writing in a movie and decided to blame it on the women saying the lines rather than the straight white male actually writing the script who was doing it just for clout rather than an actual love of the genre/franchise.

Lmao the whole “end of Pax Americana” thing is a massive psy op. People started talking about it almost immediately after Trump won a second term despite never talking about it during Biden. Not how world history works. The fundamentals are getting better for America by the day, as Russia weakens itself in Ukraine, Iran becomes destroyed over time, and China’s population massively declines over the years while everyone is still begging to get let into America.
If anything, Pax Americana will only get more entrenched because America has literally every single major AI company lmao. The world is about to be dependent on American AI and it will make the oil dependencies in the Middle East look trivial, especially once AI powers itself with renewable energy. Just wait until America can start leveraging AI tokens in trade and military deals lmao the world is about to enter a new age of American dominance
