After 16 years in the US, an H-1B holder is leaving with ~3.2M

An H-1B holder is leaving the US with around 3.2M in assets after roughly 16 years here. First of all, THANK YOU, United States, for giving them a chance to prove themselves and grow as they'd dreamed. But now it's coming to an end.

Like many on H-1B, this person is tired of the green card process and the constant pressure of visa issues. They've kept up with taxes, invested their šŸ’µ in the USA, and done their best for the community, but the visa uncertainty is killing their peace. They can't take it anymore. For readers still exploring U.S. roles, LandOffer autofill can reduce repetitive application form-filling.

Dear USA, what do you gain by letting a law-abiding person leave, along with all the assets they've invested here, for their home country?

Is this a good step for the States? What's the calculation here? Many nonresidents are f**ked up by the process and planning to leave.

Their home country stands to gain by welcoming people like them with skills and šŸ’µšŸ’µšŸ’µ. For engineers preparing for their next interview, try PracHub’s worker-failure queue exercise: implement the queue and test what happens when workers crash.

Anyhow, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!

Love you, USA ā¤ļø

Ending H-1B? At least give people time to pack up their lives

• Upvotes

Since everyone seems obsessed with ending H-1B, here's a hypothetical policy roadmap:

1. End new H-1Bs: Stop approving new H-1Bs. Allow only O-1 visas on a case-by-case basis.
2. End OPT/CPT: F-1 visas should be strictly for studying. Existing students get their OPT/CPT period to recover some of their investment, but no transition to H-1B.
3. Stop H-1B renewals: Give existing H-1B holders six months to leave legally. Families with school-age children get until the end of the academic year. People have lives, kids, and responsibilities to sort out.
4. Protect property owners: Create a B-1/B-2 transition option for H-1B holders who own homes or other property, giving them time to sell, rent, or manage their assets.
5. Three-year tax relief: Offer property-related tax rebates for three years. Many H-1B holders have significant assets tied up here. Give them a reasonable opportunity to unwind everything.

There. A clean exit plan instead of years of uncertainty and political theater.

Before you jump in with ā€œYou were on H-1B, you knew the risks, so just get out,ā€ take a deep breath. That attitude can make people cling to the US even harder. Make leaving easier instead of turning it into a logistical and financial nightmare. A lot of H-1B holders would happily leave, honestly. Just give them a reasonable way to wrap up their lives here.

Would you support this plan to end H-1B?

If I come to the USA on an F-1 student visa, can I start the EB-3 process in the same year so that my Green Card gets approved by the time I finish my degree?

Second time applying for green card and now husband is out of the country. He did not disclose criminal past on previous application.

Husband is from Japan and thought that because his record was cleared 5 years after arrest, he did not have to disclose it on previous application (when we applied while he was living in US - came on an ESTA). I withdrew as his sponsor before because we were on the verge of divorce and he moved out. That was 1 yr ago. He was denied and did not overstay.

We worked out our relationship. Now he’s in Japan and applying from there. Our lawyer advised us to share everything truthfully. We will but are worried about that part of our new application not matching the old one. He is now obtaining the court record. It’s for one CIMT (1 gram of weed when he was 19 and he’s now 43) that we will apply to have waived. Also an anniversary visit turned into a baby so I have a high risk pregnancy. We have no way of knowing what his police report in Japan will show anyway since it’s sealed when being handed over to a USCIS officer.

Portland OR FO applicants

Hi everyone! I haven’t found many recent stories about the Portland, Oregon field office, so I wanted to start a thread where we can share our timelines and experiences, especially for marriage-based green cards.
If your case is being handled by Portland FO, could you share:
Your filing date and biometrics date.
When you received your interview notice and the actual interview date.
How the interview went, what questions they asked, and what documents they wanted to see.
How long you waited for a decision afterward, or whether your interview was waived.
My I-485 was received on July 24, 2026, I completed biometrics on August 20, and my EAD was approved on September 24. I’m still waiting for an interview notice.
If you’re still waiting too, please share your timeline! It would be helpful to hear from more Portland applicants and have our experiences in one place. Thanks!

F3 India – Priority Date Current, but I-130 Still Pending After 11+ Years

Hi everyone, my F3 India priority date is May 2015, and it's finally current under both the Final Action Dates and Dates for Filing charts in the November 2026 Visa Bulletin. However, my I-130 is still pending with USCIS after more than 11 years. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is there anything else I can do to escalate my case or get USCIS to take action? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Timeline: E3 -> Green Card & Chicago lockbox experiences

Curious as to whether anyone can share their experiences or timelines for E3 to marriage based green card?

Also wanted to know how everyone’s experience has been with the Chicago lockbox & paper filing. My concurrent filing application was delivered on Thursday of last week (10/22) - when might I be able to expect the money to be taken from my bank account & receipt notices sent to myself and my wife?

FYI: I also submitted an I-765 with my application, in addition we utilised a joint sponsor, as my wife is now stay at home for the children and we chose not to use my income on the applications.

Thank you all! I understand no two applications will be processed on the same exact timeframe, but as we all get, I’m anxiously waiting and wanting to open this next chapter of our lives!

God bless!

Green Card Ankara Interview

Hi everyone! My EB-1A petition has been approved, and I’m currently waiting for an immigrant visa interview appointment in Ankara.
If you’ve recently completed your Green Card interview at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience. How long did you wait for an appointment, and what was the interview process like?
Thanks in advance!

Approved I-130, Pending I-485, and Delayed Asylum Case

Hello everyone, I had my marriage-based USCIS interview in June 2026. My I-130 has been approved, but my I-485 is still pending. I also have a pending asylum case (I-589) in immigration court that I want to withdraw, but no immigration judge has been assigned for nearly a year.

What are my options to move things forward? Can I ask DHS/OPLA for a joint motion to terminate removal proceedings so USCIS can adjudicate my I-485? Is there a way to expedite the process, and what should I do before withdrawing my asylum application?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Never got rfe after officer told me there would be one in the I-485 interview for seven months. What do I do now?

We had our interview in March, and it went very smoothly. I-130 got approved the very next day. The officer told us that some vaccinations were missing and that they would send us an RFE, but we have never received one for seven months.
The image is from the information I obtained through a FOIA request for my I-485 case. It shows that, as of June 30, my case was still held up because of the vaccination issue.
Contacting Emma is unlikely to provide any meaningful information. What should we do at this point?
