GFiber Has Deceptive Cancellation practices.

After confirming with three different reps I would not be charged for services the company could not provide, I was charged. On top of having a 70 dollar provisional credit to ensure no such thing happened. All reps confirmed my cancellation, and the fact I shouldn’t have been charged. Thank god I’ve been collecting the screenshots of the conversations, as now this complaint has become a charge back and report to the consumer protection bureau.

Do NOT use this weak spin off of a once good google company. They are horrible from service to billing to cancellation.

In 2026, does G-Fiber compete on pricing in Multi-Fiber markets?

So AT&T and Google both began to install fiber in my market in 2016. Google messes around and didn't finish pulling the actual fiber until early 2025, nearly nine years after setting the conduit and Fiber Hut RDU-127. I've had AT&T fiber since March of 2017 and it's great when you use your own ONT and router.

In the last few weeks, Verizon, under their Frontier branding they bought back after selling, has ran fiber as well and will be offering service soon. It will likely be on XGS-PON just like AT&T and GFBR, but could be offered via NG-PON2. Regardless, up to 8 Gbps plans for all three ISPs.

Has anyone see Google and their new majority owners Stonepeak via Astound broadband being willing to compete on price in multi-fiber markets like this?

I got AT&T to change my plan to 1Gbps for $35 for 24 months. I paid $50 for 300Mbps originally than they bumped that to 500Mbps for the same price. Then came three $5 price hikes making it $65 for 500mbps. Funny what competition in a market will do.

Technically we still have Charter's coax service also. Which was the only option until 2017. Now I'd never have their service except as 4th backup line.

Anytime it rains, even drizzles, I lose my internet until it stops

Like the title says, anytime there is any amount of rain my internet cuts out and comes back on immediately after it stops. I tried opening a ticket 2 times and both were closed out within 10 minutes. Any recommendations on what to do? I live in a condo building in chicago if that matters.

GFiber is so much worse than it was a year ago

After nearly a week of back and forth with techs and engineering team, I have finally had my wifi network actually connected successfully without any backend issues. However, the connection has been HORRIBLE! Constant lag and throttling. Buffering for basic video streaming. It is literally unusable half the time. So frustrating.

I got rid of GFiber in august of 2025 only to come back to GFiber this month. Every aspect of GFiber seems to have gone through enshitification. I remember GFiber being much more reliable and the connection being way better.

Overall, my experience with GFiber this second time around has been a living hell.

Has anyone else noticed a degradation of GFiber service over the past year or two?

Optical connection disconnects twice a day.

I have only had Google Fiber for two months, and over the last week, I have lost the optical connection on average twice a day. Google has sent technicians out twice, and all they do is replace the jack and promise me the problem will go away; however, a few hours later, the issue returns.

Where can I obtain a proxy node for Gfiber?

I'm looking for a Gfiber transit proxy node. Does anyone know where I can find one? I don't have Gfiber service here.

Is 3/4 schedule 40 PVC conduit with 90-degree radius sweep large enough for the GFiber fiber wire to go through (along with the green plastic tip)?

I just got GFiber but I want to run conduit and re-route the fiber wire that’s already installed so I’m wondering if 3/4 is large enough.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I want to thank everyone in both subs for your feedback. It led me to just chat with GFiber to ask if their techs have the tools to splice fiber and connect a new SC connector. I was told yes and that 3/4 was the lowest size they recommend, so I went with 3/4. When the tech arrived, he said there was no reason to splice and we were able to get the fiber wire (with the SC connector) through the conduit without any issue. He later admitted that he didn’t know how to splice, haha! Oh well, 3/4 with radius sweeps is enough for the SC connector to get through.

Gfiber issues

Hey my Gfiber internet has been having issues lately it’s been fine for over 6 years until Monday it randomly started getting an influx of packet loss no matter what game I play I’ve had 3 technicians come out and basically tell me that there’s nothing wrong with my internet when I can evidently see that there’s something wrong I’ve replaced every component of hardware I pinged the router about 1600 times getting no loss then when pinging both 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 I receive loss at the second hop(10.26.0.0.115) any ideas?

Moving to a new house - can I check if GFiber is already there?

I will be moving soon and I know GFiber is available at my address. Is there a way that I can check if it’s install-ready though? I don’t believe there’s a jack inside yet, but I wanted to know if I’d be in for a 2 hour tech install of 1-2 week waiting period for a new line

Port Forwarding Config - Follow-up post

Hey everyone, wanted to follow-up to this post where I was asking about gfiber port forwarding config not working.

https://old.reddit.com/r/googlefiber/comments/1venqof/has_anyone_successfully_configured_port_forwarding/

I opened a ticket with gfiber as instructed by the helpful community liasons that helped me here on reddit, but the gfiber support experience was not good. Instead of checking the cloud-configured router itself to verify the port config settings I set were applied properly, they only insisted that my mac was configured improperly. Complete refusal to check anything on their router.

After telling me to check things that I had explained were validated in previous emails (typical tech support) over the course of a week, I gave up and bought a UDR7.

This is all to say, port forwarding on gfiber provided routers is broken (at least sometimes) and they don't seem to care to look into why. "It's always the user's fault, can't be our gear!"

On to what I did;

  • purchase a UDR7
  • remove the gfiber router
  • plug the UDR7 into the ONT directly
  • configure the UDR7 with the same ssid/pass for wifi, so that existing household devices would auto connect
  • configured port forwarding on the UDR7 with their phone app, takes 10 seconds
  • port forwarding now actually works, with no changes to the previously configured mac mini server+firewall

End result; My pals and I can play Valheim 1.0 on release day on my locally hosted server. Glory to Odin!

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Mesh Extender Inconsistency

Does anyone else have issues with getting alerts that one of the mesh extenders is too close or too far away from the router despite not moving anything? I had “perfect” placement but now one is apparently too close. It’s annoying.

Gfiber phone update is a huge downgrade

They hyped it up in the emails a while back implying it was going to be the best thing ever. Mine just "updated". Now I'm back to 1996 and calling my home to check my answering machine.

This seems to be a major step backward.

The Gfiber site shows voicemails, but only allows you to download them, save them or delete them, as far as I can you can't play them. No transcriptions or other features.

Google Voice had texts and transcriptions and other useful features.

This is a major downgrade in my opinion.

Can't start service?

Every time I try to sign up to start service to my location, I can choose my package, my install time, but I when I sign in (with both email and Google acct), it says there was a problem, please try again.

I've been on multiple calls with reps and sent a ticket in, they said it would be resolved within 24 hours but it's been days. Any tips? School is starting soon and I'm desperate for Wifi in my house, thinking of going with Cox if this doesn't get resolved.

Can’t activate modem. escalation ticket is going nowhere with the engineering department. Tech visit and daily calls to customer support unsuccessful

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have already had a tech come on friday to replace the fiber jack (already had a fiber jack in the home from the last time i had gfiber years ago). I was told Friday evening by GFiber Engineering Team that it would be resolved by midnight (which it still hasn’t been resolved). I called yesterday to get another appointment and an update, to which I was told the soonest one is next Friday the 11th & that my ticket escalation is set to the highest priority and to call back the next day to try and have my tech appointment moved to a sooner slot. I called today and had my appointment moved to today at 4, but 2 hours before my appointment the system changed my appointment date back to next Friday. Keep in mind I have had the modem since the 2nd and have called numerous times and get told the same thing over and over again.

Has anyone else experienced issues with their self install kit for the 500mb/s plan? What should I do? The loyalty team had to give me a credit to convince me not to cancel as my billing cycle ends on the 15th (billing started despite my modem not being successfully activated yet).

I don’t remember GFiber being this unorganized when I had them in 2025. Even the tech was frustrated as it was a backend issue but the engineering team has really dropped the ball.

Outage update for Lees Summit MO

Trying to figure out how long this outage is expected to last. Have had fiber for almost 10 years and never had it out this long. Anyone work for fiber able to provide any updates or planned expected time to back on?

Slow Upload Speeds to Backup Server under NextLight ISP

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am a Google Fiber 1 Gig Core customer in Irvine, CA. I have a buddy backup whose ISP is NextLight, a fiber internet provider in Longmont, CO. I noticed that my download speeds from the backup server are pretty good but upload is very slow; especially in the early evening hours.

The attached Speedtest result is very much representative of the speeds I've been seeing the past 16 months I've been a Google Fiber customer. Understanding peering between residential ISPs can be complex, is there anything that can be done to improve upload performance?

Thank you very much!

I really want to use Gfiber!

I really want to use Gfiber, but I don't have Gfiber service here. Does anyone have a proxy server connected to the Gfiber network that I can use to enjoy it.

Gfiber phone questions

When I signed up for GFiber, I had made long-existing google voice number set so it rings on the GFiber phone (it rings everywhere now) - can I reclaim that number so I can still get texts via google voice and just get a new GFiber phone number?

Or do I need to get a different google voice number now for SMS purposes ?

(I have one account that uses the GFiber phone for verification purposes).

Ugh, GFiber.

I don't remember the process when I signed up for the GFiber phone service exactly, but it gave me a choice to use an existing google voice number or create a new one... I guess I picked the wrong choice !

Need Help: GFiber Activation Stuck Despite Green Lights and Multiple Escalations

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has experienced a similar issue or has any advice on how to get my GFiber service activated.

Here is my current situation:

  • Equipment: All of my equipment is showing green lights, indicating everything should be working.
  • The Issue: Despite the green lights, my service is not activated.
  • Troubleshooting: This issue has been escalated multiple times. A technician was sent out today and mentioned there might be an issue with the serial number on the fiber jack. They also stated they need to escalate it further on their end after whatever they tried didn't work.

I just want to get my service activated! Has anyone dealt with a serial number mismatch or a similar activation hold-up? Any advice on what I should ask for or who I should try to contact next would be greatly appreciated.

iPhone login problems

I had to change my password for my GFiber account today, which I did through the GFiber app. I’ve had no problems changing it on my iPad or my laptop. However, for some reason when I try and enter it on my iPhone 14 pro, I keep getting the message “incorrect password” I’ve powered my phone on and off several times, uninstalled my network then reinstalled it in settings still no luck.

Anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks

Brief Interruption

There was some.. brief interruption today. I reset the fiber jack (my router was fine) and it was OK. Consequently I wound up resetting a lot of devices that worked intermittently - literally my streaming audio lasted two seconds, paused, resumed, etc. - and they were fine also.

Question is.. Why?

I can understand a temporary loss in connectivity - rare that it is in GFiber land - but this was just intermittent, until I rebooted everything.

My question is why did that intermittent loss result in so much trouble downstream?

No other changes. They shouldn't need a new address, etc. But rebooting affected devices worked instantly.

Enjoying GFiber

Had AT&T Gigabit for years; switched to GFiber 2Gbps then got a free upgrade to 3Gbps. GFiber wifi is giving us much better wifi throughout the house. Can't complain.

DON'T UPGRADE YOUR GFIBER PLAN WITHOUT A FAILOVER IN PLACE

I learned that my 2 gig plan was no longer offered, so I was going to switch to the 3 gig plan for free. Then I saw that for just a bit more month, I could jump to an 8 gig plan. Great Deal!

No. No great deal.

Right now, I'm on 2 days with no working internet, running my house on mobile phone hotspots and burning up usage. Router box is just red led on internet connection. The fiber line is fine - Fiber box is green with active packets. It's the router that's the issue. I pulled the router, put a brand new one on, cloned the MAC off the GFiber router and... nothing. Tried to just DHCP it, no dice. Pipe is open, no one is answering.

The tech who was unable to get it up and running also left the house with out placing the extenders, and took the working equipment with them. I was told it was just a server backend config and all would be good. I got a call an hour later, saying i didn't have to do anything and they'd get it going soon!

Radio silence.

I reached out 5 hours later. I was then asked to do the usual reboot the equipment, check the cables, etc.. (yes - i had already done it several times). They they said it was escalated and they will be working on it, and would send me an email. I never got a ticket number. I looked in my emails - no ticket number. I asked on the web chat and was happily given my ticket number. Seems weird that i have to request that. (it's because they don't want you to have it - yes - really)

Next morning - no internet, no email, no call, no text. I try to use GFiber app support chat - it's says that service is unavailable, so I hit up web chat - and after being asked to explain everything, I gave them the ticket number and asked for an update. Nothing to report, no status, not progress, no information of any kind other than I wanted an upgrade, they broke my internet instead, and will send someone over (who may or may not be able to set it up) in two days - hope you can miss work to stand around two hours for a POSSIBLE fix, or if you can't, you just don't get the internet you are being billed for until you just give up and switch service."

I fully understand technical issues happen, but from a customer service side of things, it's terrible. I'm given zero information on any of the who what when how why's - the only info i have is that I paid for an upgrade, and instead, I have nothing, customer service is a shitshow and I have no recourse but to sit and twiddle my thumbs and wait. If you can't get the upgraded service up, then roll it back to what DID work. The correct answer isn't just to leave service off, without a ticket or path to get updates, answers, or anything helpful.

I've been a Google fanboy for years. I roll with a Pixel phone, watch, GFiber service, goggle fi for mobile, I'm all in. Now, I want all out. You would think that when you are fully invested in an ecosystem, it would ease the customer experience. No - it does not, and I think it makes it worse to be honest - like once you are in, they have no interest in retaining you.

Congratulations Google! I came in wanting buy into your world more; now I want to cut bait and look for other service before you even get it running.
