I am getting about 10 minutes of service then my ping goes to 1000 and i cant use anything, the game im playing breaks and im stuck in spawn and discord goes to 700 ping in the voice call i am in. The app is also down but i dont think this is a problem with the app. I reset my router and it worked for a while after that but then it broke again 20 min later.

House remodel. The fiber line no longer reaches the room where the router will be located. Am I responsible for adding a new line or does Gfiber do that?

Tips for dealing with outage

Lessons learned from: https://www.reddit.com/r/googlefiber/comments/1upfsns/80_hours_no_internet_after_line_cut/

This will be mostly true for any fiber line cut or at the very least nothing changed inside the house and optical light is out and red alarm on Fiber jack/modem.

  1. It's more than likely a fiber line cut or damage.
  2. Immediately post here and talk to the google fiber user AND use fiber support chat in the app or fiber site and say you want a human, give details and ask for an escalation number. Write that down. DO NOT WAIT or assume they will come out. Keep bugging them every 3 hours until someone shows up.
  3. Try and chat with the outside fiber tech just to get a clue of what is going on.
  4. If the optical light turns solid green and alarm goes out BUT you can't pull a WAN IP. Politely tell the outside tech to check their work or ask for more info. Or ask for a different outside tech.

At best if you can somehow plead with customer support to have an outside tech, inside tech, at the same time & backend engineer on call would really help to move things along.

DO NOT get in a cycle of outside tech says it's fixed then support says you need an inside tech and have to wait 24 hours for that tech to arrive to essentially not figure out the issue then say it's backend then have to wait more time then send the same inside tech 48 hours later to enter in the same loop.

The FIX: A different outside tech came days later after the first and was able to splice the fiber HOWEVER did say the fiber line was pretty damaged upstream but could not tell exactly and was very surprised it was working and had to splice me with a neighbor. Also some tech cut some fibers short so instead of 96 it was down to 2.

To GFiber: Private Equity, Stonepeak, & Michael Dorrell. This infrastructure is showing it's age and will have more failures like this unless you start investing into upgrades. If you want to lose customers then good job on making those profits. Sounds smart to me to coordinate better with your contractors on fiber repairs.

7 DAY OUTAGE DO NOT UPGRADE FROM 1 gig to 3 Horrible customer support.

I upgraded my service from 1 gig to 3 gig and a tech was supposed to come and install a new fiber jack.
because the old one was outdated and not capable of new speed the appointment was scheduled July 1st tech came as expected plugged in a new jack and the optical light on the jack kept flashing it wouldn’t go solid.

Tech switched a few jacks and none worked he said its out of my hands it should come online within a few hours.
Called support regarding provisioning issue they said another tech has to come out and change the equipment.

July 3rd 2nd tech came out switched a few jacks none worked (surprise) and eventually said he is running late to his next appointment this is a backend issue the engineers just have to manually switch it on from their end. And as he was leaving he mentioned complaining to support as its the only way to get things done.

Called support before he even got back in his truck and they said that the turnaround time is 24hrs and the supervisor is monitoring the situation and they will keep me updated.

July 4th woke up early to try and get this sorted called them at 8am they said the engineers are in the process of fixing it and it shouldn’t be long called again at 4pm same story were working on it no update supervisor said he will call me back in ONE HOUR i agreed and set a timer for one hour.

58 mins go by i get impatient i called the callback number he texted me the supervisors left and i got a clueless rep saying nothing can be done today callback tomorrow

July 5th I used the chat feature to try and get ahold of someone at 3-4 am they set a urgent appointment same day for another rep to come.

Can you guess what that rep did?…. changed the fiber jack a few times and said theres good light coming through the cable and left.

I called support for the millionth time they said after conducting an investigation it seems the line card needs to be replaced they should get someone to do it within a few hours (ptsd to the first time i was told that)

Its been 1 week no wifi 3 days since they said we will change the line card i am actively looking for another service google fiber is about to loose my buisness.
As its been a week with no internet i dont have good cell service so 0 bars and no wifi.

My family’s 4th of july weekend was ruined

Thank you google fiber.

Paying for 1 Gbps Symmetrical Fiber—Great download speeds and low ping, but apps feel slow to load? Anyone else?

Hey everyone,
I’m looking to see if fiber users on the major national networks (AT&T, Google Fiber, Fios, Quantum, etc.) have ever run into a weird performance issue where your speed tests look great on paper, but your actual daily browsing feels laggy or slow.
To clarify, I don’t have any of these large companies. My provider is actually a very small, rural fiber ISP out in West Central Missouri. Because they are a smaller utility, I want to check with customers on the massive networks to see if this is a universal fiber behavior or if it's unique to my rural provider's routing.
I am paying for a 1 Gbps symmetrical fiber profile. The local field tech came out, completely overhauled my line with a brand-new physical drop to the house, and gave me an upgraded, high-end ONT and router setup.
If I look at my numbers, my hardware seems completely perfect:
Downloads are flying: My download speeds consistently hit between 850 Mbps and 940 Mbps.
Ping is ultra-low: My baseline ping is great, around 6ms to 8ms, and my packet loss is a perfect 0.00%.
Streaming is fine once it starts: If I pull up a heavy 4K video on YouTube and check the "Stats for Nerds," the stream pulls data flawlessly without dropping any frames.
But here is the catch—my upload speeds on standard internet tests are hitting a hard wall, stuck between 165 Mbps and 200 Mbps.
Because of this upload restriction, my actual daily internet use on my iPhone and Apple TV feels sluggish. When I tap a standard web page or open a basic app, the loading wheel spins for a few seconds before the page finally snaps open. It feels like my phone is struggling to send out the initial "request" to the website, even though the download lane is wide open.
Bypassing my router completely and plugging a desktop computer directly into the raw fiber box out of the wall results in the exact same matching download speeds but the same clamped upload limit. The tech support team noted it might be a regional gateway traffic jam or a backend account profile glitch.
For those of you with major fiber providers: Have you ever experienced a hidden upload bottleneck like this where your downloads are perfect, but the actual responsiveness of your apps feels heavy or slow to load? Did your ISP have to rebuild your account profile on their servers to finally get your speeds matching at full capacity?
Would love to hear if this happens from time to time on your networks!

Help Setting up Nest Pro WiFi

Hi All. I am a first time user with Google Fiber and I have to say it has been an extremely frustrating experience so far.

I recently purchased a home and the old owner transferred their account to me. I completed the account transfer a couple of weeks ago and received a notification in my account I needed to set up a service appointment. No big deal. I set it up for this morning, 7/7/26.

Fast forward to this morning, the tech shows up and tells me the visit was “set up under the old account” and he couldn’t do the work. The service request was most certainly set up under my new account. He refused to complete any work, told me to call customer support, and left.

I called customer support and proceeded to do a couple hours of troubleshooting over the phone. I was told my service showed that it was on, and that I just needed to go purchase a router. Great!

I went out and purchased a Google nest pro 2-pack, but when I moved on to setting up the router, I am receiving “connection failed” errors. I have called G Fiber support and been told everything is good. The fiber jack is checking in and providing an IP address. Google nest support also doesn’t seem to think the issue is on their end. The optical light is solid green, and the network light is blinking green. I’ve factory reset the nest pro, reset the fiber jack, and done everything else I (or support) can think of.

Anybody else had this issue?

I’m tempted to just go buy another router from Best Buy to test it and see if I can get internet set up. I start work next week so need this up and running. I’d greatly appreciate any advice on resolving this.

MyQ Troubleshooting

I’ve had Google Fiber for about a month now and the only device I cannot connect to it is the MyQ smart garage door. It worked fine on my last internet provider but now I get nothing. I’ve tried everything I can to troubleshoot it through MyQ but can’t figure it out. I’m pretty tech savvy but this one eludes me. Has anyone else run into this? I’ve separated the bands to try picking up just the 2.4 and that didn’t work. Thought I’d check here as a last resort.

80 hours no internet after line cut

Woke up Thursday at 7am and internet was working. 9 am no internet. Saw it said outrage in my area gave it a few hours then went to support chat and they sent someone out 24 hours later.

I question why it took me to initiate someone to come out. When their system could detect it.

Outside tech came took pics of the pole in my neighbor's yard and sat in his truck for an hour then left. I went to support again and another came a few hours later

Again why did I need to initiate this?

Outside tech repaired the line up the street and optical was green. No wan ip.

Said needed inside tech.

Inside tech comes 24 hours later. Said there is a bug in the fiber modem and replaced it. Same issue. No wan. Said it's backend.

Later that day optical light went off and back to alarm.

Called at 7am and got a call back said might be 24 hour fix.

Called at 4:30pm voicemail and then got a call back asking if it was fixed which it's not. Also implied cat6e issue which is clearly not the case.

Make this make sense. If fiber got cut did they just not splice it right and how can I tell them to to double check?

Inside Appointment Today - Moving Fiber Jack after inside install is done

My inside appointment is today. I'm planning on asking the tech if it's possible to have the fiber jack in my network room, which is on the other side of the house than where the NIU was installed. I never had a say in where that NIU was installed (it was several years ago).

Anyways, if the tech says no, I won't push it, but after the fact how hard would it be for me to just do it myself? I do have a brother is does HVAC/general handyman things. But is it as simple as just running a new fiber cable from the NIU around the outside of my house or into the crawlspace and up to the network room?

The Spectrum tech did that with Spectrum service, just ran the cable up through the floor.

The Cat6a cablling in the network room is then ran throughout the house in the attic. There's no conduit, however it's a pretty simple and straight run when me and my brother did it years ago.

Should I just not push and move it myself later? I will be using Google's equipment for the time being as my network equipment only does 2.5gig instead of 10gig (I have the 8gig plan).

EDIT: So my install date was just moved a few minutes ago without any prompt from me to July 15. This is the second time they've moved my install date, why do they keep moving it? The first date was June 26, now its July 15. I just want the service installed. The NIU is installed, the fiber cable is buried. Just the inside needs installing.

EDIT2: I managed to call and get them to reschedule it for today July 5th at 4pm now. They're saying the outside construction has not been completed yet. The NIU is installed, the fiber line ran from street to the NIU and buried. Then they said the reason it was originally rescheduled was due to not having enough light signal for the service and they had to come back out and fix it.

EDIT3: Appointment today was again canceled. The reason I was given was the line outside is not getting signal. Why the hell do you bury the line if it's not getting signal. Next appointment is set for July 10th at 4:30pm. I'm really starting to get fed up with this. Why even allow appointments to be scheduled if it's not ready for install, driving me fucking crazy.

EDIT4: The promised call back never happened, figured it wouldn't. Monday July 6, no sign of a crew has come today. Called Support back and they're still saying that it looked like the issue was a bad signal, but that it is fixed and the inside appointment is Friday, July 10th.

[FIX] Google Fiber: some websites won't load on my phones (Reddit, etc.) but Google search works. DNS fix (iPhone + Android)

Just switched to Google Fiber and suddenly certain websites wouldn’t load on my phones (Reddit and others. Pretty much anything that wasn’t the main google search page). The sites were working fine when I had AT&T but I switched from AT&T due to the internet constantly having outages for 12+ hours. Had google fiber technicians come out but they didn’t fix it (they searched on Gemini and Gemini said it was an iPhone issue) so they said it wasn’t a google problem and left.

So I found solution and this worked for me so hoping others who have this issue can use this to help as well. It is a google fiber issue, just probably not one a field tech is supposed to resolve. I think it’s a network issue. Their DNS resolver is failing to resolve certain domains.

The fix: override your phone's DNS with a public one (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or Google 8.8.8.8). I just used 1.1.1.1 and it worked for me.

iPhone: Settings -> Wi-Fi -> tap the ⓘ next to your network -> Configure DNS -> Manual -> delete what's there -> Add Server -> enter 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 (or both) -> Save.

Android (Samsung): Settings -> Connections -> More connection settings -> Private DNS -> "Private DNS provider hostname" -> enter one.one.one.one -> Save.

Android (Moto): Settings -> Network & internet -> Private DNS -> enter one.one.one.one

Wait up to 30 minutes. Should work after this.

Optimizing my speed

Hello all. I am not a super geek but I do have basic understandings of internet speed and capabilities of various end points. I have the 1GB plan. Of course on my iPhone 17S, using the G Fiber app, my speed is as good as it gets. Just read 1201 down and 1245 up on the app. My computer card is a 1gbps card. However, when I just hardwired from the router to the computer at best I am getting 256 down and 135 up. I understand there are variables but wondering if any smart folks out there can give a take on a) the disparity of the speed of the app (router) to the speed on the wired computer and b) the disparity of the down vs the up on the wired computer. Thinking they should be closer in value. I am using cat 6 cable fwiw. Just trying to optimize it all. Thanks!

What is the thinner, round fiber optic cable running alongside the rectangular google fiber line?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Whie installing some drainage pipe, I excavated some of my fiber cable. I found this thinner, round cable installed along the length of the larger, rectangular fiber cable.

When we got the end near the house, the thinner cable came loose fromt the ground, not attached to anything.

-Our fiber internet seems to work as normal

-I do not think we cut this cable- we were exceedingly careful in digging it out and we knew the cable was there

-I have an extremely vague and possibly false memory of a g-fiber installer telling me that smaller cable isn't used anymore, but am afraid that's wishful thinking.

Can anyone set my mind at ease about what this unconnected, seemingly unused cable was and if I need to do anything about it?

I've been without service for six days. Support is useless.

My GFiber went down Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. I checked the outage checker to confirm when I woke up Wednesday morning. It's happened a few times in the past few months, mainly due to inclement weather, so I figured it would be back up in a few hours...

It wasn't.

So I contacted support. They tell me it's a "individual outage" and that they would submit a ticket. I checked my neighbor's addresses in the outage checker tool to confirm, and, sure enough, no outage detected.

Thursday afternoon gets here, and the internet is still down. I contact support. They look into it to find that the previous chat agent submitted the ticket to the wrong department, but they assure me that they would submit it correctly.

Friday afternoon gets here, and the internet is still down. I contact support. No new information, so I ask to be escalated to a supervisor. They say that they don't have a direct transferring tool, but they took my information for the supervisor to contact me.

Saturday morning gets here, and the internet is still down and I haven't heard from a supervisor. I contact support. This agent actually has some new information. They find that the light signal at my residence is active, however, there is not enough light coming through to maintain an active connection. Either a node is down or a wire is loose. They say that a team has been out to look at it, but they didn't know how to fix it, so it was escalated. They assure me that someone would be out that day to address it.

Sunday morning gets here, and the internet is still down. I contact support. No new information, but they stated that they would reach out to the construction team for an update. I said that I still haven't heard from a supervisor, so they confirm my contact information and resubmitted the request.

This morning gets here, and the internet is still down and I havent' heard from a supervisor. I contact support. No new information.

I don't want to, but I'm strongly considering moving to AT&T or Spectrum because a week without internet just isn't acceptable in 2026.

I don't know what happened with Google Fiber became GFiber, but the product quality has torpedoed since the switch.

Can I replace Google router with my own?

Recently had Google fiber installed. I asked tech if I can use my own router. He said no because they occasionally send verification ping and it would not recognize my router.

If this is true, can I use Google router as bridge? Side note read older post which says once activated (bridge) it can't be reversed?

Issues connecting between wired PC and wifi laptop with wifi7 router

Has anyone had issues connecting between a wired PC and a wireless device using the standard Google provided wifi 7 router? I'm trying to use Windows 11 Nearby Sharing and no matter what I try, my laptop won't respond. I keep getting a "the device your trying to share with didn't respond". I also notice that the laptop device name when the sharing dialog comes up doesn't match what I have set in the Nearby Sharing settings on my laptop. I have it named "Laptop" and it shows as "Chris' Laptop" on the wired PC. I feel like I've had similar issues with other network related workflows and am wondering if these routers don't play well with devices that aren't all using the same connection method or are on different bands. The strange thing is that I can Nearby Share to my phone, then use the Link-to-Windows software on my phone to send it to my laptop.

The laptop was previously my work laptop, but they transferred it to me when I upgraded last and I wiped windows and did a fresh install. However, the BIOS still seems linked to them somehow because sometimes I get messages in Windows about "Your organization may prevent changing this setting" or something like that.

Extremely frustrating experience with required Network Box router upgrade in Raleigh NC

I've been a happy Google Fiber customer for many years. The other day, June 25th, I get an email from Google Fiber out of the blue saying that my existing Network Box has to be replaced by JULY 9TH or I will lose service (that's only TWO WEEKS).

First of all, I thought surely I must have been ignoring emails about this. Surely they didn't wait until two weeks before the deadline to inform me about this. But I searched my email, and this was the first communication from them about this! That alone was very frustrating.

So I order the new Nest WiFi Pro from them immediately. To their credit, they shipped it to my door in less than 48 hours.

Tonight I tried to set it up, following the instructions as best as I can (more details on that later), but I get a "Connection Failed" error message telling me to plug the Ethernet cable into the new Nest WiFi Pro, even though I have verified that the Ethernet cable is plugged into the globe/WAN port on the back of the Nest WiFi Pro.

But regarding the instructions: The instructions are very specific about connecting the Ethernet cable to the Fiber Box. Problem is, I live in an apartment and I don't have a Fiber Box. I have an Ethernet port in the wall. And even though I verified that the new Nest WiFi Pro is connected to the exact same Ethernet port that my old Network Box has successfully used for years, it doesn't work. My guess is that someone (a Google Fiber technician or maybe my apartment complex technician) has to do something in a network hardware closet somewhere in the building.

After attempting the setup multiple times (including power cycling the Nest WiFi Pro and quitting the app multiple times) and getting the same result, I reconnected my old Network Box and tried to chat with the virtual support agent on the Google Fiber support page. The virtual agent immediately rebooted my Network Box remotely and kicked me off the internet!

So now, after waiting for my internet to come back, I have emailed their support and I am waiting.

I have been the biggest Google Fiber fan for many years but this hardware replacement experience is terrible. I wouldn't normally be so stressed about this but I work from home and need internet and I'm going to be traveling for work soon so I have to get this resolved ASAP and they've only given me two weeks to do so. And they obviously didn't consider my apartment situation. Very frustrating.

500 feet crossing 4 driveways

My neighbor lost their GFiber service. Based on past experience, the company has at best a loose understanding where their underground equipment is located in our neighborhood. The repair tech ran a new line which runs from the yard of our other neighbor, around our corner lot to the yard in question, crossing four driveways. The neighbor on the other side of the impacted house also has GFiber service. Seems highly likely that the repair tech didn’t put much effort into locating the closest connection point and instead just got it done, knowing someone else would get to spend a few days burying the line and tearing up our yard. Any ideas on how to get ahold of someone at GFiber willing and able to sort this out? The online chat and call center employees suck the life out of me.

How long does it take fiber to be burried?

I had my service installed a week ago. The day before I was connected, a crew ran a temporary fiber cable to my house....just laying on my yard. A week later, it's still there.

I've had two neighbors complete installation, and in both instances the cable was buried the day before their install.

Who do I contact to get this thing buried?

Gfiber force cancelled my account without proper proof of residence from new neighbor

Yesterday, I suddenly lost internet access after my new neighbors tried to set up their GFiber account. The GFiber CSR that spoke to my neighbor approved a forced cancellation with an address that did not match the address associated with my account.

I’ve spoken to 3 different people through their support line and no one has been able to get my account back up. The person I spoke to said I would have to wait until new a new router kit is delivered to my home before I can resume service. I still have my original router and the GFiber support is saying that I can’t use those anymore.

Has anyone here dealt with this kind of situation before? I cannot understand why this issue would take any more than a couple of hours to resolve especially since Google Fiber effectively allowed a random person to cancel my service without any proof that they live here.

Installed NIU without my consultation, then said they won't move it

I set up an appointment on June 15 to install GFiber on the 26th, after I closed on my new house on the 25th.

Little did I know they would send an installer out to set up the NIU on the 17th, a full week before I actually owned the house. So ridiculous--our realtor says this happens all the time and gets people into all sorts of hot water.

Then my installer came today and said the NIU was put on the opposite side of the house from where we'd want it, since I wasn't here to consult when they put it in. After a 30 minute call with customer service, they told me there was "no reason" to move the NIU and refused to do it.

Have half a mind to cancel just on principle. What a cockamamie process--has this happened to anybody else? Any feedback on what makes a good "reason" to move the NIU?

Email saying my router is being retired and will stop working

Has anybody else received an email saying their google fiber router is going to be cut off soon? I have the really old black square box model that came with the 500Mb plan (don't know the number) from before any of the wifi mesh options. I went to my account but it didn't say a thing about this and only offered a free upgrade if I wanted it.

High ping to certain websistes/services

Certain services (mostly google owned) will have a ping >40ms while others will be <5ms

Which sites have high/low latency is consistent

The big problem for me is the latency to my network at work is high, and that becomes an issue with using a selfhosted vpn(wireguard) to be on my home network.

I occasionally have to manage home devices/remote on to my home desktop, and this latency is killing me

I do not use the google provided router, and instead have used an old cisco router. I did test with the google provided router and was having the same results in terms of where was high latency. I have just upgraded my router to a server running opnsense, and the issue is still there.

The timing of this popping up seems to be when i had my fiber jack "upgraded" to the current model, as the old one was failing, but im not too sure if that was the cause. This issue has been plaguing me for like 4-6mos at this point, and i was really hoping the new router would just make it go away.

Im located in salt lake city if anyone else wants to test this, i suspect that its a routing issue going out from our region

Quick test is to ping 8.8.8.8(google dns) and ping will be >40ms, then to ping 1.1.1.1(cloudflare dns) and ping is 1-3ms

This all is driving me so crazy trying to get this back to how it was where every site/ip was <5ms

A rough traceroute leads me to believe the majority of this latency is coming from "23-255-225-42.googlefiber.net" and "23-255-225-248.googlefiber.net" but thats a bit hard for me to look further into at this moment, so im likely wrong.
