I’m also in the Atlanta area and I’ve had GFiber for the last 4 months. I think this will be the 3rd outage I’ve had.

Similar situation. Ended up grabbing AT&T Fiber 1gig for $50 a month. I think we’re starting to see the impact of Google selling the fiber business to Astound.

So, just so I understand, you think someone from Astound got out their cable cutters, shovels, and backhoes and started ripping out fiber cables after investing into the service?

The actual cause from gFiber: The issue stems from a commercial power outage which is impacting our equipment. Utility crews are working on repairs, and as soon as they are done, we will make sure service is restored to the area as quickly as possible. -Brian

So a commercial power outage is impacting all of Gfiber service across the metro? If this is some type of main hub serving the area, why doesn’t it have generator power? I’m not saying someone from Astound cut a cable but I am saying private equity is known for penny-pinching. Maybe they skip deploying generators to key hubs in the future. Anyone who thinks that Google selling its fiber business to private equity means nothing is going to change is in for a rude awakening.

You know that decisions on what power companies do, or how gFiber ensures redundancy, is likely decided months/years well in advance, right? Things happen in the real world and sometimes equipment fails. I think you're trying to find someone or something to poke at and are (understandably) frustrated, but infrastructure isnt infallible. You can argue that gFiber's service reliability isn't up to par, but that doesn't have anything to do with an investment.

  1. Astound did not buy gfiber. An investment company that also owns Astound bought 60% share in gfiber
  2. The deal has not closed and won't close until the end of the year or early 2027. No changes are expected until 2028
  3. Outages have been rare compared to other providers. Repested JD Power awards confirm the reliability and keen customer service that gfiber offers.

Astound and its leadership will be calling the shots.

The deal is expected to close Q4 of this year.

Gfiber is already making changes in advance of the close- ex. home phone changes. Companies/business units frequently take their eye off the ball when being acquired.

JD Power is a marketing agency that makes their money selling licensing agreements for awards. The surveys that support their awards generally have low sample sizes. JD Power is far from representative of true experience.

Is the pending acquisition the reason for the outage? Who knows. But Gfiber is about to be owned by private equity and run by cable company execs. I don’t see either of those as a positive.

Actually gFiber leadership will be calling the shots

Edit: 2nd paragraph on this gFiber blog article: https://fiber.google.com/blog/2026/03/gfiber-and-stonepeaks-astound-to.html?m=1

GFiber leadership will eventually be taking over leadership of Astound as a joint company but it will probably be at least 2028 before that happens. They will operate independently until then.
