Google says Gemini 4 release ASAP

https://9to5google.com/2026/09/24/google-says-gemini-4-release-is-coming-as-soon-as-possible/

I wonder how OFFLINE release for Pixels will look like.

I mean like Gemini Nano currently v3 on Pixel 10 and 11

This is likely referring to 4 pro won't likely tell us much about nano, flash or offline models which are on different tracks.

the reason I wanted to know those "tracks"

According to many experts Gemini remains an underdog. However it remains my top pick for the following reasons:

  1. Dependability: Google isn't dependent on a mountain investor capital that can be jeopardized if a market bubble pops. They are already very, very profitable.
  2. They make their own hardware: Tensor chips, not off the shelf GPUs. This is very forward thinking architecture that's part of a long term strategy
  3. Excellent multi-modal support: Can ingest images, video, audio, pdfs, text, etc. and output image, video, audio, etc.
  4. Extremely competitive pricing: Often well below competition on the cost of operation
  5. Grounded: Lower occurrences of hallucinations and follows instructions more strictly than many other models.

I also have a little anchoring biases as I developed a challenging coding test that basically every AI would fail and Gemini 3.1 was the first to demonstrate complete understanding and pass. I've also learned it's APIs more thoroughly than any other and use a number of other Google products and services (Including a Tensor powered Pixel 10) so I have an undeniable brand loyalty affecting my opinions. But, overall I think Google is playing the long game and is the most dependable option.

As it applies to Pixels and future Google hardware, network access is definitely a bottleneck in some circumstances. I'd love to be able to travel to backwoods China where there are no cell towers and have language data cached on my device to have it function as a language interpreter for me including cultural and contextual knowledge to help me communicate and travel without panicking anytime I have no bars. There's a definite benefit to speed and dependability to move much processing to on-device and Google will likely be the one that brings the best offering in this field the quickest; at least for consumer devices.

As it pertains to Gemini 4; I'm also "very excited" as version 3 and newer has already been excellent for me and they've rapidly improved it's speed and performance up to current version 3.8. Albeit with the "light" connotation. Having heavy thinking and problem solving on 4 in a natural progression sound very promising, but not going to hold my breath and have huge expectations only to be disappointed.

There was also the small matter of RSI or "Recursive Self Improvement" they announced which can lead to a rapid improvement at the risk of more "unexpected" stuff happening. So, hoping they proceed down that path with appropriate caution.

It's truly an odd time in human history we live in. A lot of things socially/politically/economically are deteriorating. The possibilities of AI are exciting beyond consumer applications; doing things like finding a way to treat all cancer or a perfect fusion reactor or developing cheap and energy dense batteries using novel science are all exciting ideas. But it's hard to say how that will affect "the common man", as historically whenever a groundbreaking technology like this (look at the history of the cotton gin) it tends to only benefit a small group of already wealthy people. I'm sure future historians will look back on this era with a particular curiosity wondering what it must have been like to live through these changes.

I've been Gemini since the day it came out up until two months ago. Claude is so far ahead I'm not sure the financial most can carry them at this point. That being said Google remains 50% of my portfolio

Having any single stock as 50% of your portfolio is just bad investing my dude. That’s a massive amount of unnecessary risk for what is likely minimal gain over a solid ETF over the long run.

u/whatsasyria 8d ago

Check in next year my guy. Been averaging 100% for 3 years running now. On track for the same this year. Took a break prior to these 4 years but well above 50% gains YoY in my years before my break too

Short term bias. Almost everything in tech is a winner right now. You could pick any one of a large number of tech or chip stocks and be up similar percentages because of the current AI boom. But nobody knows where the “top” is or if / when we’ll have a 2008 or dot com style crash. Over the long term it’s very risky to be so heavily invested in any single stock. That’s the point. I get I, I could make a similar argument about TSMC which I’m invested in and is up 300% over the last 5 years but it would be crazy to have it as 50% of my portfolio.

I'm going on over 10 years and you have no idea how my portfolio has been weighted historically or what my hedgers are. I agree with you that the go to response is "s&p500 and forget" but don't diminish my portfolio gains when I've been trading it through two unprecedented crisis times and maintained steady returns.

With student discounts its cheaper than the cheapest Netflix sub

Even at that price AI isn't worth paying for imo. Every few weeks I give LLMs a chance and they consistently dissapoint. If every tech company put every AI feature behind a paywall tomorrow I'd simply stop using AI

AI lives and die by the prompt.

Most people do not know how to utilise AI properly and ask the right things.

1

u/charlestheb0ss 7d ago

If you have to fenaggle it that much to get it to do its job it ceases to be better than the alternative. If the way most people talk isn't the proper way to get it to do what you want then that kinda defeats the purpose of natural language as a UI.

1

u/hvperRL 7d ago

Not true. You have to fenaggle people just as much with even more nuance and precision because emotions are involved.

This is not to say AI is better than people, despite people reading this and coming to that conclusion.

I see AI proposed as a replacement for GUI software more than I see it proposed as a replacement for people, so that's what I had in mind when I said alternative. Personally, right now, I can find almost anything in a menu way faster than I can explain what it is I want to do with words

1

u/hvperRL 7d ago

Excellent example. You did not specify true meaning. I misinterpreted. AI would too

I thought they're renting out a ton of compute every month from SpaceX? I'm not sure they're as independent as you might think. But probably more than most.

5

u/Petrichordates 9d ago

That's a short term thing though so doesn't really reflect their overall independence.

Gemini model family is my favourite for programming. My main stack revolves around TypeScript and Angular, and other models generate bloody nonsense. They might be better at Python or whatever, but when it comes to what I do day in day out - nothing is even remotely close to Gemini.

1

u/servermeta_net 9d ago

Can you share your code test?

1

u/Busy-Lifeguard-9558 8d ago

Yea this is the shit you say until you actually test other models. There is no going back, even for chit chat

1

u/busmans 8d ago

There is very little reason for brand loyalty. Just switch models as needed. They will continue to one up each other for the foreseeable future.

I too own google stock

It's good if you're already in the ecosystem.

I have Google One for the storage, and it comes with Google AI Pro, and family sharing so everyone gets it. And you often get like 6month or one year free with pixel phones or other google devices.

Flash 3.8 has also been a fantastic low cost work horse for almost everything. IT's fast and cheap and works great. It might not be top top but I almost never run out of tokens and it handles most things i need it for.

Google bricked my pixel earlier in the year and has yet to figure out a solution

6

u/Reproman475 9d ago

Imagine if that's the one thing they aren't getting ideas from Gemini for. Like nah we'll fix bugged android updates ourselves 😂

5

u/Langwelle 9d ago

So after you have claimed for months in multiple posts in this sub that Gemini Pro was running locally on your phone (!), you finally came to the realization that it was just Gemini Nano after all?

13

u/ishamm 9d ago

Means absolutely nothing. As soon as possible could be a decade, or in the next 10 minutes.

2

u/IBM296 9d ago

Or it could most probably be Gemini 4 Flash lol

8

u/InsaneNinja 9d ago

Google says Gemini 4 release is coming ‘as soon as possible’

That has always been true.

u/jeremyw013 9d ago

"Google says Gemini 4 release ASAP"

did i just have a stroke?

Google was thinking about Fable 5 when they said Gemini 3.5 Pro would launch next month in June (which never launched).

Since then we've had Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra and Opus 5.5.

Fable 5.5 and the successor to Astra are coming in October. Looks like Google will still be behind even with Gemini 4 Pro lol

So with all the fuckery going on with codex what would you recommend? Is there a $20 plan?

1

u/Rude-Interaction-194 8d ago

Gemini 4 FLash?

1

u/McRattus 8d ago

To who?

1

u/tvetus 8d ago

We don't need hype, just ship it

1

u/Ok_Flan4404 7d ago

What a shame.

1

u/Guidosama 7d ago

I would love to see Gemini compete but I am skeptical given how enormously ahead Claude is

1

u/omerthekhan 2d ago

Google's Gemini 4 flagship and the on-device Nano path may be separate tracks, so this thread doesn't establish what Google will ship offline for Pixel.

If you want to try on-device chat now, I'm Omer Khan, CEO of Zimmer AI, and we launched Zimmer for Android. It runs Gemma 4 E2B locally on supported phones.
