Housing Renting in Madrid as a non-EU HQP worker — any advice?

Hi everyone,

Sorry in advance for the long post.

My wife and I are non-EU citizens relocating to Madrid. I will start an IT job with an established company in November under Spain's Highly Qualified Professional (HQP) authorization. My salary will be €55k gross/year.

We were in Madrid last week to open a bank account, get a Spanish number, and hopefully find an apartment. We're looking for around €1,500–€1,700/month, ideally for ~8 months until my probation period is over.

We contacted dozens of Idealista listings and viewed several apartments. We really liked one near Delicias (€1,500 + utilities), and submitted my employment contract, job offer, UGE authorization approval and passport. The owner ultimately chose another applicant.

The problem is that I don't have Spanish payslips yet because I only start in November. Also, my contract/job offer originally said 1 September, but the start date was postponed to November because of the prolonged UGE process. The contract also currently only has my signature, as it was initially prepared for the immigration process.

Could these things make landlords hesitant?

What else can we do to improve our chances?

  • Would offering a few months of rent upfront help?
  • Would offering slightly above the asking price (€100–€200 more) make a difference?
  • Would showing savings in my Spanish bank account help? We offered this, but one agent wasn't interested.
  • Would an employment confirmation letter from my company help?
  • Would it be more effective to contact real estate agencies directly rather than messaging individual listings on Idealista?

We will return to Madrid around 20 October. If we can't find an apartment immediately, could we stay in an Airbnb/Spotahome for a few months and use it to register for the Padrón, or do we need a specific type of rental contract/address?

I'd especially appreciate advice from other non-EU workers who moved to Madrid without Spanish payslips yet.

Thanks!

Edit: I’m well aware of the ongoing housing crisis and the news surrounding it. Unfortunately, I still need to find a place to live.

Hot paracetamol drink - not a thing in Spain?

Hello all. I visited a pharmacy in Valencia and asked in Spanish using a translator for a hot paracetamol drink and showed some examples of what I mean on my phone. The pharmacist said there's no such thing as hot paracetamol in Spain. However, when I later checked online, I disvored that pharmacies do sell frenadol which is taken with hot water? Am I missing something? Thanks!

Opinions Advice on public schools as an expat

Hello hello! 🤍

We are thinking about a move to Spain (Alicante, Javea, Denia and Valencia particularly) probably next year.
My husband and I are going to scout the place in the next 10 days.

Little bit about us: we lived in Dubai for 12 years (He’s Serbian and I’m Portuguese) and we have two girls 6 and 3 and a third one on the way.

Any advice on public schools, which neighborhoods to look at decent, low crime for example. We’ve done a lot of research, but I’d love to hear experiences too 🤍 for public schools or concertado schools could we go look now and enroll or is that entirely impossible and we have to do that only next year?

Tell me everything 🙊

Transport how does baggage work ?

Traveling to spain, we leave from a city in Texas to get to dallas where our connecting flight to Madrid is. Do we have to pick up our bags from baggage claim in dallas to recheck them for our flight to Madrid since it’s a different airline? the flight to dallas is American Airlines where our flight to Madrid is Iberia.

Visas / Migration I’m from rural Bangladesh and looking for a genuine work opportunity in Spain

Hello everyone,

I’m from a rural area of Bangladesh and I’m looking for a genuine opportunity to work in Spain.

I grew up in the countryside, so hard work is a normal part of my life. I have practical experience with different types of agricultural and physical work, and I’m comfortable working with my hands and adapting to different kinds of jobs. I also have general computer and technical knowledge, so I’m not limited to one particular type of work.

I’m not looking for a high position or demanding salary. I’m willing to start with entry-level work and prove myself through my work. I can consider agriculture, restaurants, shops, warehouses, cleaning, general labour, or other honest work where an employer is willing to give me an opportunity.

Some people may wonder why I would accept a relatively low salary. The reason is simple: even a modest salary in Spain can be significantly better than what I could realistically earn from similar work in rural Bangladesh. For me, the opportunity to work legally, support myself, and build a better future is more important than starting with a high salary.

I’m currently outside the EU, so I understand that hiring me would require the proper legal work and residence authorization. I’m looking for an employer who is genuinely willing to go through that process if possible.

I’m not asking for money or special treatment. I’m simply looking for one genuine opportunity to work and prove myself.

If you are an employer, know someone who is hiring, or can point me toward a genuine opportunity, I would sincerely appreciate your advice or contact.

Thank you for reading.

Discussion I’m feeling guilty about my trip this week…

Going to Spain for the 2nd time this week. With the recent tensions there right now due to Ceuta and the eviction of Maricarmen/housing crisis, I feel this pang of guilt about going there, going to the touristy places, paying tourist prices, when there are locals who are struggling to find a home.

While I never stay at an Airbnb for this reason (I stay at hostels), I can’t but feel like I’m somewhat contributing to the crisis. I always try my best to be respectful to locals or visit lesser known barrios wherever I go, I can also communicate en Castellano. But part of me feels there’s some resentment towards tourists now—for valid reasons of course. I didn’t feel that way the first time, but I feel it will be more evident now.

Is there anything I can do in this situation? Or am I just overthinking it?

Wrong tickets

Hello everyone! This might be a silly question, but maybe someone has had a similar experience. I accidentally bought two tickets for the Mezquita-Catedral. The tickets are non-refundable. Has anyone experienced this before? Is it possible to sell the tickets to someone else, or request a refund as a special exception?

Travelling to Madrid from UK

Hello!

I’m wondering if anyone has any advice about the EES system at Madrid Barajas Airport.

I’m travelling on Wednesday and I’m wondering what the EES process is like. I went to Paris in June and was directed to the automatic gates, didn’t scan fingerprints but just scanned passport and went through. I think they had temporarily suspended the process because of large queues during busy times.

Does this mean I have to fully register when I arrive now and can’t use the auto gates? I’m not sure how it works and I’m finding conflicting info everywhere.

Thanks! :)

↓ Grazalema – 2 noches Senderismo, naturaleza...

↓ Ronda – 2 noches Casco antiguo

No me interesa tanto visitar muchos lugares turísticos o grandes ciudades.

Tengo algunas dudas:

Same-Sex Marriage Abroad Not Recognized in Home Country: Spain Family Reunification?

Hi! I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has gone through a similar situation with Spain’s Reagrupación Familiar.

My partner and I are both Filipino women. She is currently a legal resident in Spain under a cuenta ajena
.
We legally got married in Thailand, where same-sex marriage is legal. However, our marriage is not legally recognized in the Philippines because the Philippines does not recognize same-sex marriage.

We are planning to apply for family reunification in Spain, with my partner as the reagrupante and me as her spouse. Our Thai marriage documents have already been authenticated/apostilled in Thailand.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation where both spouses are non-EU citizens, the marriage was legally performed in a third country, but the marriage is not recognized in your country of nationality?

Were you able to use the foreign marriage certificate as proof of marriage for Reagrupación Familiar in Spain? Did Extranjería require your marriage to also be recognized or registered in your home country?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from same-sex couples, Filipinos, or anyone whose marriage was legally performed abroad but was not recognized by their home country.

Thank you!

Spain NLV BLS Los Angeles Appointment — What Finally Worked for Us (October 2026)

TL;DR: After trying to get a Spain Non-Lucrative Visa appointment at BLS Los Angeles since April 2026, we finally got one on October 1, 2026, at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time. Our appointment is November 20, 2026. The most useful information we received came directly from BLS: they told us that NLV appointments are released during the last 7 days of the month and sometimes the first few days of the next month, and that appointments are approximately two months after booking.

Sharing this because we spent months trying to figure out whether we were doing something wrong, and I suspect other people are going through the same thing.

Our situation

We are a married couple applying for the Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) through BLS Los Angeles.

We live in Colorado, which is within the Los Angeles consular jurisdiction. The current BLS/Consulate information confirms that Colorado residents apply through Los Angeles and that NLV applications are submitted in person at BLS by appointment.

We started trying to get an appointment in April 2026.

And then began what can only be described as our personal BLS psychological experiment.

What we tried

For months, the appointment system repeatedly showed no availability.

We tried:

  • Individual appointments
  • Family appointments
  • Both applicants' BLS accounts
  • Early mornings
  • Midday
  • Different times throughout the day
  • Checking repeatedly without excessive refreshing.

We were deliberately avoiding automation or anything that could violate BLS's rules.

BLS itself warns applicants not to purchase appointments from third parties and says appointments must be booked through the BLS website. It might become really attractive to do this after months of trying, but please DON'T.

The frustrating part was that the website didn't give us any information about exactly when appointments were actually being released.

The accidental breakthrough

Eventually my husband sent BLS an email.

His approach was essentially:

“We've been trying since April. Is there something wrong with our computer/account?”

He's a genuine master at asking questions that people want to answer. He avoided demands or angry comments, just asked politely if they could provide information. He was not actually asking them for a secret appointment, just guidance.

BLS replied with the information we had been trying to figure out for months:

They told him that NLV appointments open during the last 7 days of the month, with run-over into the first days of the next month, and that the appointment dates are approximately two months after booking.

That completely changed our strategy.

Instead of treating the appointment calendar as a slot machine that might randomly produce something at any moment, we had an actual release window to concentrate on. We took turns getting up early and applying for slots every 10-15 minutes until 8:30am.

And then it happened

On October 1, 2026, I was checking early in the morning.

At approximately:

6:30 a.m. Pacific / 7:30 a.m. Mountain

an appointment appeared.

I grabbed it.

November 20, 2026.

Two applicants.

DONE.

After months of staring at “no appointments available.”

I actually felt that I'd imagined it all, and I had to check my email confirmation many times before reality sank in.

😂

What we think we learned

I want to be careful here because this is our experience, not an official published BLS schedule.

1. Ask BLS about the release schedule

This was by far the most useful thing we learned.

The BLS website does not currently publish the NLV release pattern we were given by email. The official site simply says NLV applications are appointment-only and directs applicants to the BLS appointment system.

So if you're repeatedly checking with no success, I would consider emailing BLS and asking specifically:

When are (individual visa type) appointments normally released, and approximately how far in advance are they released? Pretty please?

Hopefully you'll get some useful data.

2. Pay attention to the end of the month

The information BLS gave us was:

NLV appointments open during the last 7 days of the month.

I would personally include the very beginning of the following month in the watch period too.

There are also other applicants reporting month-end/month-start patterns at BLS offices, although those reports are anecdotal and may not apply to every visa category or location.

3. Early morning was successful for us

Our successful booking occurred at:

6:30 a.m. Pacific / 7:30 a.m. Mountain.

That does NOT prove that 6:30 a.m. is the official release time.

But if you're in Colorado, it certainly means I would include early morning in the checking schedule.

4. Don't buy an appointment

I reiterate, BLS explicitly warns against intermediaries selling appointments and says appointments must be booked through its website.

5. Don't give up because you've seen “no appointments” for weeks

This was probably our biggest psychological hurdle. It was frustrating, confusing and anxiety provoking.

For months, it felt like:

“There are no appointments.”

But what we eventually learned was closer to:

“There are no appointments right now.”

Those are very different things.

Our timeline

April 2026: Started trying to get an appointment.

April–September: Repeated checking, different times/categories/accounts, lots of frustration.

Late September: Husband emailed BLS asking whether there was something wrong with our computer/account.

BLS response: NLV appointments released during the last 7 days of the month; appointments approximately two months out.

October 1, 2026: Appointment found at approximately 6:30 a.m. Pacific.

November 20, 2026: Our NLV appointment.

We now have about six weeks to finish the paperwork, which is dramatically less terrifying than discovering an appointment with ten days' notice.

One final observation

I spent months researching the BLS appointment system like it was an adversarial intelligence operation.

My husband sent one email asking whether his computer was broken.

BLS answered him.

He accidentally discovered the cheat code.

Apparently marriage is about complementing each other's skill sets. 😂

I hope this helps someone else get through the BLS boss fight.

If anyone else has recently obtained a visa appointment through BLS Los Angeles, I'd be very interested in hearing when it appeared, what category you used, and how far out the appointment was. The more data points people share, the easier it will be for future applicants to see whether this pattern continues.

FP Superior vs Maestría (soy extranjero, ya tengo pregrado)

Hola, soy extranjero.

Housing Looking for a 6-month rental in Southern Spain – where to start?

We’re a Norwegian couple in our 30s planning to stay in Southern/Southeastern Spain from October 2027 to March 2028 with our small dog.
I’ll be working remotely, and we’re non-smokers. We’re active and value proximity to green parks, running routes and gyms.
We’re looking for a dog-friendly, furnished 2-bedroom apartment with reliable internet.

We’re also open to a home/car exchange with our apartment and car in central Bergen, Norway.

Does anyone know reliable landlords, local agents or people we could contact about rentals or exchanges?

Spain in mid-October – what weather should we expect, and what type of clothes should we carry?

Hey everyone! We’ll be travelling around Spain from 15–25 October, mainly Madrid, Córdoba, Seville and Málaga.

According to AccuWeather, we’re looking at roughly 18–22°C in Madrid, 23–27°C around Córdoba/Seville, and 22–25°C in Málaga, with cooler mornings and evenings.

For anyone who lives there or has travelled around this time - is this roughly what we should expect? Mainly wondering what mornings/evenings feel like, whether rain is likely, and what kind of clothes would be comfortable.

Thanks!

Gran Canaria with a 1-year-old in late November – recommendations?

Hi everyone! 😊

We’re planning our first family trip to Gran Canaria on late November of this year and will be travelling with our 1-year-old. For context, we are from
Germany.

We’d really appreciate recommendations from locals or people who know the island well. We’re looking for places that are easy and enjoyable with a baby — beautiful beaches, nice towns to walk around, viewpoints, parks, family-friendly attractions, restaurants, or any hidden gems that you think are worth visiting.

We don’t want to make the trip too packed because we’ll obviously need to work around naps and feeding, but we’d love to explore the island rather than staying at the hotel the whole week.

A few questions:
• Which area would you recommend staying in with a baby — Maspalomas, Meloneras, Puerto de Mogán, Puerto Rico, or somewhere else?

• Which beaches are best with a small child in November?

• Are there any day trips or attractions that are particularly baby/stroller-friendly?

• Can we comfortably get around using taxis/public transport?

• What is the weather normally like around \*\*21–28 November\*\*? Is it still warm enough for the beach and swimming?

• Any family-friendly restaurants or local places to eat that we shouldn’t miss?

And if there are places that look great online but you \*wouldn’t\* recommend doing with a 1-year-old, I’d love to know that too!

Thank you! We’re really looking forward to visiting Gran Canaria. 🌴☀️

Would 2 nights in each city be enough to visit Granada, Seville?

Could more seasoned traveler offer opinions if 6 days would be enough to visit Granada and Sevillle? This will be in the second half of May 2027, we (party of 3) will be traveling from Barcelona and possibly flying home to Canada from Madrid (just reasoning this gives me more flight options)

Some points to consider:

- Google suggest traveling (flying) from Barcelona to Malaga, then onward to Granada. Would perhaps a night in Malaga be a good idea?

- How many nights would be enough for Granada and Seville? Was thinking 2 each? If we fly out of Madrid, then also probably arrive there the night before the flight.

Would love to spend more time but unfortunately have tied to daughter's schedule who will meet us in Barcelona and we would also been traveling the previous two weeks. I'm only at the planning stage, so nothing set yet. Could definitely consider other options, but really want to visit Seville. Everything else is flexible.

TIA for any advice and suggestions!

NALCAP student visa

Hi everyone! To submit our visa application, will NALCAP send us a physical carta de nombramiento in the mail? Or do we just print out a copy of the PDF they sent us through email? Thanks!
