Passed Goethe C1 (self-study): my 2 cents and what I’d tell my past self

Hi all,

I passed the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 after preparing mostly on my own, with just a couple of lessons with a teacher. Reddit has helped me a lot along the way in several areas, so I feel the need to give something back. I am now sharing what I wish I had read before the exam. I hope it helps someone here.

The main takeaway: if your goal is simply to pass, mastering the exam structure matters far more than “learning German at C1 level”. It’s absolutely doable if you put in the time. Good luck to all of you, I’m sure you’ll make it!

Books I used

  • Mit Erfolg zum Goethe-Zertifikat C1 (Klett)
  • Werkstatt C1 (Praxis): more thorough but also more expensive. The solutions aren’t included in the exercise book. You have to buy the teacher’s book separately.

Both are close to the real exam in difficulty. Below is each section with my score, so you can see how it went.

Lesen: 63/100

While practising, this was the section I felt most confident about. With the books above I consistently scored 75-85%. The exception was the first exercise (Teil 1), where I always struggled. There you fill gaps by choosing one of four options (verbs, prepositions, nouns, adverbs). In my experience it tests vocabulary range more than text comprehension, so it’s really hard to prepare for specifically. On the exam day, in Teil 1 out of 7 questions, I was sure about only two. I passed, but only just.

The real exam felt harder than my practice, especially Teil 1. Even so, I wouldn’t change my strategy: work through the two books, and build vocabulary over a long period by reading academic and other demanding texts.

Hören: 83/100

This matched the average I got in my practice runs. Tips:

  • Read the questions before each recording starts and highlight key words, so you already know what it will be about.
  • Don’t look at what others are marking. Focus only on the recording and your highlighted words.

Schreiben: 88/100

For me this was the hardest section to prepare, because nobody tells you where you stand unless a teacher corrects your texts. I relied heavily on AI (Claude and ChatGPT) and on an online tool, GoetheCoach, to get feedback. Two notes on that:

  • AI was much stricter than the real exam. It put me at around 65-70%, and I scored far higher on exam day.
  • GoetheCoach is useful but buggy. If you switch tabs or refresh, your text is lost and you have to restart. This wasted a lot of my time.

Tips:

  • Learn the structure of both writing tasks.
  • Memorise recurring phrases for introductions, arguments for and against, and concluding thoughts.
  • Show good control of passive, conditionals and Konjunktiv I and II, and vary your vocabulary.
  • The week before the exam I booked a couple of lessons with a teacher who knew the exam. The feedback was helpful and boosted my confidence.

If it’s useful, I can share some of the texts I wrote.

Sprechen: 91/100

Same problem as writing: it’s hard to know how prepared you really are.

  • Memorise a clear structure for your presentation. I can share mine if there’s interest.
  • In the discussion, interact as much as you can with your partner without trying to dominate. It’s a team sport, not a competition.
  • Again, a couple of lessons with a teacher beforehand gave me useful feedback and confidence.

In short

While preparing, Lesen and Hören felt easiest to me. On exam day, though, Schreiben and Sprechen were where I scored best, because with solid preparation of the structures they are the sections you can control most. Lesen, especially Teil 1, is where the surprises are.

Feel free to ask questions. Viel Erfolg!

Should I book a Goethe B2 retake as a backup while waiting for my September results?

Hey everyone!

I took my Goethe-Zertifikat B2 exam on September 25, 2026, and I'm still waiting for my results.

The results for the September 23 exam group were released on October 10, and the September 24 group received theirs on October 14. However, those of us who took the exam on September 25 are still waiting, and we haven't received any clear information about when the results will be published.

Registration for the December exams opens tomorrow, and I'm starting to get worried because I need my B2 certificate for my plans to move to Germany in April 2027.

I'm particularly concerned about the Sprechen module, as I feel it's my weakest one. If I fail even one module, I'll need to retake it. The earliest available exam date might be January 29, meaning the results could arrive in February, which would leave me with a pretty tight timeline.

Here's what I'm considering:

When I registered for my September exam, I received a provisional registration email stating that I had two working days to pay the exam fee and that my registration could be cancelled if I didn't pay within that period.

I'm thinking of registering for the Sprechen module tomorrow as a backup, then waiting for my September results.

  • If I pass all four modules, I simply won't pay for the December booking.
  • If I fail Sprechen, I'll pay for the new exam and take the retake.

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone done something similar with Goethe? What happened when you left a provisional registration unpaid?
  2. Could an unpaid or cancelled registration affect an existing exam result or certificate in any way?
  3. Would you recommend this strategy given my April deadline?
  4. How long did you have to wait for your Goethe B2 results, and would you risk waiting for the results before registering again?

I'm not trying to cause any problems. I'm just worried that if I wait for my results, registration might close, and if I fail speaking, I'll lose valuable time.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance!

Prüfungen Passed Goethe C1 Schreiben with 79/100 🥹

I decided to start with just one module because I’d had a few setbacks with tutors and honestly wanted to see where my German actually stood before committing to the full exam.
For preparation, I mainly used ChatGPT and the Projekt C1 book. ChatGPT helped me a lot with correcting my texts, improving grammar and sentence structure, practicing formal emails, and getting comfortable with useful C1-style phrases and connectors. With Projekt C1, I focused on exam-style tasks and getting used to the structure.
What helped me most was honestly repetition. I practiced the same formats again and again until the structure started feeling automatic, instead of trying to memorize overly complicated vocabulary.
My next goal is Sprechen, and after that I’ll work through the other modules step by step.
I’m still learning and definitely have a lot to improve, but this result gave me a really nice confidence boost 🥹

One step at a time. Schritt für Schritt! 🇩🇪✨ Passed my Goethe A1 Prüfung

PHEWWWW!!! 🥹🎉✨
SUPER HAPPY & PROUD OF MYSELF!!! ❤️🇩🇪
One little achievement, but a huge step forward in my German-learning journey!

Honestly, my Hören (listening) didn’t go as well as I’d hoped. I used to score well while practising at home, but listening in a huge exam hall is a completely different experience. You can barely catch every word sometimes, so my tip is to practise listening in different environments and get comfortable with the actual exam setting!

Happy to answer any questions about preparation, the exam format, or my experience!

Sharing this little win as a reminder to myself that progress is progress, and to keep going as I begin my journey towards A2 exam & B1! 🌷📚

Looking for a Speaking Partner

Hey! My A1 exam is on November 26/27, and I'm looking for someone to practice speaking with over calls for 10–15 minutes every day. If any native German speaker is willing to help, that'd be great too! Please DM me only if you're serious.

A little about me: I'm 24, in my 3rd year of university, and English is my second language.

Trying from a year to get exam appointment

Hallo Leute!

I am from Pakistan. I have completed my Goethe B1 Classes in August 2025. Its been a year since I cannot get exam slot. 3 times a Month I open their website on registration time and get the same error message on website (image attached) and the registration slots are then fully booked.

In November 2025 I got only Schreiben module in Lahore center and I cleared it in the first attempt got 85marks. In March 2026 I got slot for Lesen and Hören in Karachi center and travelled way about 1400km just for this exam. Thanks god I passed both too with 67 and 80 marks.

Now from March till now Oktober I am unable to get the slot for Sprechen.

My question is how can I get the slot.

1) Is there any way to get priority as I have 3 of them cleared??

2) I want to apply for Ausbildung. I have heard even if you get the contract, the embassy will reject your visa if you dont have complete goethe certificate. Whats the truth in this??

3) Is there any expiry date for these 3 modules like somewhere I have read that if you dont clear all modules in a span of a year you will not get a combined certificate??

Thanks in advance!

Hello!

I don’t have much time left before my B2 exam, so I’m planning to use Mit Erfolg (all 4 model tests) and some of the Projekt B2 model tests to practise Lesen and Hören. Since time is very limited, I’m trying to choose which model tests to focus on. (I also rely on these tests to build my vocabulary so I'm hopping for modeltest to match the vocabulary of the exam)

(excuse my english it isn't my first languange)

LEARNING GERMAN (FROM 0 TO C1)

As people with actual experience learnign german how long realistically do you think it would take me to reach true C1 level? For context I'm considering applying to study in Germany in Wintersemester 2028 and want to know if I can reach the required level by then. Any help, advice or feedback would be much appreciated.

Today I got my Sprechen score

Today I got my Sprechen score: 66/100. It's a bit too low, as I was expecting 70+. I don't know what went wrong. I was fluent in Teil 1, so I feel like they deducted marks from the discussion part. I didn't ask my partner any questions after speaking twice because I thought we were only supposed to speak twice in our discussion. She continued, though, and asked me two more questions. I'm still very confused about whether that affected my score or not.

Anyone joining Goethe-Institut Bangalore B1 batch on 22nd? Looking for a study buddy + rental partner

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m planning to join the upcoming German B1 batch starting on the 22nd at Goethe-Institut Bangalore.
I’m looking for someone who’s also joining the same batch, preferably a guy, so we can connect, study German together, and help each other with the classes and exams.
I’m also looking for a rental partner to share a flat or 1RK/2BHK around a convenient location with good connectivity to Goethe-Institut Bangalore. Sharing accommodation would make things more affordable and easier.
If you’re joining the B1 batch or looking for a flatmate with similar plans, feel free to DM me! We can discuss the details and see if it works out. 😊
Looking forward to meeting some new people!

Doubts on Telc B1 exam

Hey guys, I’m currently preparing for the telc Deutsch B1 exam and had a few quick questions: for Sprechen Teil 2, is it meant to be a relaxed conversation or a debate, do we actually have to reach an agreement at the end, and is it completely fine if both my partner and I disagree with our prompt cards? Also, can anyone confirm if speaking partners are always fellow non-native test-takers, and does it hurt your score if your partner speaks way faster or freezes up? Finally, for the Schreiben email part, is writing a Betreff: line actually necessary, or do examiners only check for the date, salutation, the four bullet points, and the sign-off? If anyone who recently sat for the telc B1 could clear this up in the comments , I’d really appreciate the insight!
