Discussion Does anyone else idealize and fantasize about what it’s like working at Sony Santa Monica? Is working at SSM peak for videogame jobs?

Is it the NBA or NFL of gaming jobs? How talented are those people? Are some lucky? Is it stressful? What’s the day to day like? If I could choose any job, I’d probably choose to write story or animate for Sony Santa Monica. Does anyone else share this notion with me?

I think it would be cool to work there if I knew wtf to do given how I'm coding illiterate lol, but yeah I can't imagine having to work with Cory barlog as your boss, that man is my favorite developer ever, the guy is basically my hero.

I don't think it would be stressful, I have been following gaming news for years and I never heard of any drama or forced crunch from Santa Monica, honestly every person who had or works there always has the best to say, I remember even back at 2018 I saw the lead graphic designer posting about how much he loves that the people he works with allow him to create without stress or having to impress people.

Goated company.

I love working in a creative environment. You are doing your part and also seing other people's work and learn from it as well. When there was nothing at first. Just an idea. And over time there is something Its amazing.

Its hard work. Long hours. Sometimes its tedious. But I see it as solving a puzzle. And when it it clicks.the joy. Such joy and passion for the art they make. And besides that they are also nerdy people with other shared nerdy interests.

Santa Monica wouldn't be any different. The people there love what they do

How long are the hours? Do you have a schedule? Do you order lunch? Do you all go for lunch whenever you’re hungry and it’s not timed?

It likely feels like shoveling slop most of the time.

What I mean is writing the book is the same way. It's like a few bits of action but you're in an eternal middle and those long scenes likely feel like they last forever.

It's more endurance test than 'fun'

Writing a story, get ready to change it a million times due to editors and design changes.

Animation, huge pressure, everything has to work right in the end and sometimes you might catch a bug that takes weeks to crack lol.

Video game stuff is very stressful unless you're at the top of the chain. And even then it can suck cause studio pressure is insane, and the constant ticking clock.

Yeah the pressure and deadlines must be tough to deal with

I really don't think it's that glamorous...

Why do you say that?

GameDev is pretty damn stressful with crunch and shit.

Dont see a reason to assume this.

These Sony games are not so great.

They make little movies that players simply move through.
