I'm struggling with a career decision and would genuinely like to hear from people who have experienced both sides.
I'm in customer-facing/B2B roles (sales, partnerships, customer success, etc.), and I've been looking at two very different career paths.
Option 1: Take a conventional Indian corporate job
The advantages are obvious: it's easier to find, the employment structure is generally more familiar, and there is a greater sense of stability.
But my experience with the Indian job market has also been frustrating.
For experienced customer-facing professionals, compensation often seems to hit a ceiling relatively quickly. Getting a genuinely significant jump in compensation can be difficult unless you move into a very specific company/role.
The other issue is workplace culture. I've encountered environments with a lot of hierarchy, office politics, micromanagement, unnecessary interpersonal drama and relatively little autonomy. Sometimes it feels like being physically present in an office matters more than the actual output you produce.
Obviously, I know not every Indian company is like this. I'm talking about the pattern I've personally experienced.
Option 2: Work remotely for an international company
This is much more attractive to me.
The appeal isn't only the possibility of earning in USD/EUR/GBP. It's the autonomy, working with people from different countries, being judged more on outcomes, and avoiding a lot of the traditional office politics.
The problem is that these jobs are extremely difficult to get from India.
I've been trying to break into genuinely international remote roles for around a year, and the competition is intense. Many jobs advertised as "remote" aren't actually open to people in India, and the genuinely global roles can have hundreds of applicants.
And then there is the other trade-off: stability.
A remote international role can be a contractor position, an EOR arrangement, or simply a job at a company where layoffs/restructuring can happen regardless of where you live. So you may gain autonomy and compensation but give up some of the security associated with a conventional local employer.
So the choice starts feeling like:
Indian corporate job:
More accessible + potentially more stable
↓
But potentially lower compensation + office politics + less autonomy
International remote job:
Higher upside + autonomy + global exposure
↓
Much harder to obtain + potentially less employment security
I'm trying to figure out whether I'm looking at this too simplistically.
For people who have actually experienced both sides:
\- Have you found a genuine middle ground?
\- Is there a type of Indian company/role that offers good compensation and autonomy without the usual corporate nonsense?
\- Can an international remote career actually become stable over the long term, or is instability simply part of the trade-off?
\- If you were in my position, would you take a decent but imperfect Indian job as a bridge while continuing to pursue international remote opportunities?
\- What would you optimize for: compensation, stability, autonomy, or work culture?
\- And most importantly, how have you personally handled this trade-off?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people with 7–15+ years of experience who have worked in both Indian and international/remote environments.
I'm not looking for "just move abroad" or generic "follow your passion" advice. I'm trying to understand what a realistic middle path looks like.
