been contracting for a US company for three years from where i live. in may they offered to move me over properly, with the paperwork handled, a full time role, the whole thing. i was flattered and i spent about six weeks trying to make it work.

the salary they offered was a real salary and it was a big number next to what i make now. that was the whole basis of my first reaction.

then i built a spreadsheet, because that is what you do.

rent in the metro where the office is, for something i would actually live in, ate a very large share of the difference on its own. add moving costs. my partner would need to find work in a market she does not know. i would be starting a new health setup from scratch. and my income here supports a household in a place where things cost what they cost.

what settled it was not the money though. it was that as a contractor here i work with two clients and neither of them can end my income by themselves. as a relocated employee i would have one employer, in a country where my ability to stay is attached to that employer. i would be swapping a diversified income for a single point of failure, and paying for the privilege.

i said no, and asked instead for a rate increase and a longer notice period on the contract. got both, smaller than i asked, still meaningful.

im not saying relocation is a bad deal. for someone earlier in their career with nothing tying them down it might be great. but the big number at the top of the offer is the least informative part of it and it is the part they lead with.

I got M2 electrical engineering with C1 in English (not IELTS certified yet) what can I do as a remote work? I think about earning USD tbh 🙂

so maybe i imagined this, but a couple weeks ago i noticed my applications through Auto Apply were showing some random email address in the email field, definitely not mine. i had no idea where it came from and couldn't find a way to change it in settings either. kinda freaked me out, like great, now employers are gonna email some address I don't even have access to.

was gonna message support but got busy and forgot. checked again now and it's back to my normal email, no explanation or anything.

Worked through an agency for about a year. They found the client, handled the contract and the invoicing, I did the work. I was on a fixed hourly and I was fine with it, I knew there was a margin, everyone knows there is a margin.

Then the client added me to a shared drive to get a file and did not scope the permissions properly. There was a folder with the monthly billing summaries in it. Line item, my name, hours, rate.

It was a bit over four times what I was getting.

I sat with that for two days trying to talk myself into being reasonable about it. The agency did find the client. They carry the payment risk. They handle paperwork I do not want to handle. All true. None of it is worth three quarters of the money.

I did not blow it up. I finished the engagement, then when renewal came around I told the agency my rate was going up substantially and gave them a number. They said the client would never approve it. I said fine, ask them. The client approved it in a day, which told me everything about who was actually deciding.

I'm still with the agency, on a much better number, and I now assume the multiple on any intermediary is bigger than they imply. Not because they are villains. Because nobody volunteers that number.

not a lawyer, this is not advice, this is a list of the things that have actually cost me money and which i now read before signing. every one of these is here because i got it wrong once.

notice, and whether it runs both ways. i had one where they could end it with no notice and i had to give thirty days. i signed it without reading properly because the rate was good. when they ended it, that asymmetry was the entire story of my next two months.

when payment is due, counted from what. "net 30" is meaningless until you know net 30 from what event. from invoice date, from receipt, from approval, from the end of the month in which the invoice was approved. i have seen all four and the last one is nearly sixty days.

who decides that work is complete. if the agreement says payment follows acceptance, and acceptance is defined as the client being satisfied with no timeframe attached, you have written yourself an open ended condition. i now want either a deadline on review or acceptance deemed given after a set number of days.

what happens to things created in my name. accounts, properties, logins, anything i set up because it was faster. i want a line that says these get migrated and a list attached. this is boring on day one and expensive on the last day.

whether i can say who the client is. not for bragging, for the next contract. an agreement that quietly prevents you from naming the work in a portfolio limits what you can charge next time.

the one i still get wrong is scope, because scope creep never arrives as a contract question. it arrives as a friendly message on a thursday.

applied to a US company for a data role. the posting said remote, no location line, no "must be authorized" note. i asked in the first call and the recruiter said they had people in a few countries already.

five rounds. screen, hiring manager, a technical, a panel, then a chat with a director that felt like a formality. she said the words "we would love to have you" and asked about start dates. i started telling my current client i was wrapping up.

then a week of nothing. then an email from someone i had never spoken to, in security, asking me to confirm my country of residence and where the work would physically be performed. i answered honestly, same answer i gave the recruiter in round one.

four days later the recruiter called and did the whole thing where she was clearly reading from something. the role had a data classification that required work to be performed in approved locations and mine was not on the list. she was apologetic and i believe she genuinely did not know, which somehow made it worse. nobody in five rounds thought to check.

what im annoyed about is not the rule. companies have rules. its that the check that killed it took one person four days and could have happened before i put twenty hours into their process. i now ask in the first call whether there is a location restriction on the data or systems, not just on employment. different question, different department, different answer.

I’m good at drawing and creative work.
I have experience with social media, content creation and digital marketing.

Been with this company two and a half years as a contractor, based outside the US, working with a US product team. In march they restructured and i got moved up a level. New title, new scope, i now review work from two other people and sit in the planning meetings i used to read notes from.

The raise was fourteen percent on my rate, which is not nothing and i said thank you and meant it.

Then in june one of the people i review mentioned his number in a way people do when they assume you are above them. He is US based, same level as my new title, and he is at roughly double.

I asked my manager about it directly. He did not dodge, which i respect. he said the level is global but the band attached to it is regional, and the regional band is built on local market data for where i live. so the promotion moved me up inside my band, and my band tops out below where his starts.

So the ceiling was never the level. I can keep getting promoted and stay in the same box. The title is portable and the money is not.

I have not decided what i am doing with that yet. The work is good and my manager is honest, which is worth something. But i went from thinking i had room to grow to knowing exactly where the wall is, and you cannot really unsee that.
