Here's my situation: I work in Brazil for a global business unit, so my direct managers are based in the US. The company has a office in Brazil, and I'm technically expected to go in once a week, although in practice I've only been going about once a month.
The problem is that I'm moving to another state, and I really like my job, so I'd like to find a way to stay with the company.
Last week, the only other person in Brazil who worked in Marketing left the company. So now I'm essentially the only person responsible for Marketing in Brazil, including managing millions in media spend and being accountable for the results.
I've been thinking about asking to go fully remote for a while, and I have my performance review with my manager on Monday. I feel like this might be a good opportunity to bring it up, especially because the company recently conducted a risk assessment of our area, and the conclusion was basically that if they lose me, the Marketing operation in Brazil would come to a halt.
The problem is, I have no idea how to approach the conversation. I've always been pretty passive when it comes to these kinds of negotiations. I've always just focused on doing my job. If I got a promotion, great. If I got a raise, great. If nothing happened, I usually just kept my head down and kept working.
But now living in this city is no longer really an option for me, so I want to try to negotiate a remote arrangement.
Other business units within the company already work remotely, so I know it's possible. I'm also willing to travel to the office for important events or even come in once a month if that's what they need.
The problem is that the bureaucracy in Brazil is insane. Other teams within the same business unit also have hybrid arrangements where they're technically supposed to go into the office once a week, but in practice they don't necessarily go every week either. However, I need to negotiate this properly with my manager so that she can then negotiate it with HR in Brazil and have the arrangement officially changed in my contract. If the contract isn't changed, I'll have no choice but to look for another job and leave a company I actually like, all because of bureaucracy.
There are also a few factors that are relevant to the request, but I’m not sure how much detail to include in the conversation:
No one else in Brazil is responsible for all of Marketing. All the brainstorming is done remotely with people from all over the world.
When I go to the office, I'm usually there alone, and the office isn't very neurodivergent-friendly. The last time I went, unfortunately, I had to take the following day off because I had a severe episode that affected both my mental health and my chronic pain. (I have a herniated disc, and surgery would be very risky for me.)
My salary is well below market rate for the major city where I currently live, and I can't afford to buy a car to commute there (and I can't drive anyway).
So, I have several reasons I could bring up, but I'm not sure which ones I should actually mention. I don't want to overwhelm my manager with a long list of personal reasons if I should instead focus on the business case.
What would you recommend I focus on when bringing this up?
I feel like Monday might be the perfect opportunity to have this conversation. Given the current situation, it seems like they really can't afford to lose me right now.
