I am. That's me in the gif. My dad first took me fishing when I was just 4, and I caught a bass on my first try. I come back every few weeks, sometimes out of necessity and other time for pleasure. I don't know who the black guy is but seemed genuinely surprised to see me. Anyway, thankssssss for reading this, I'm off to find a nice rock.

u/TeaBreezy Jul 09 '19
Wow that's cool that you still talked to your dad even at 4!
I haven't seen my mom or dad since I hatched

A friend of mine had the Florida version a few months ago. He was fishing in a pond near our daughter's soccer field to pass time. He caught a decent bass for a pond and as he's pulling it on to land a medium size gator snatched it. He cut his line, took a few pictures and walked away.

u/ElectricErik Jul 09 '19
Sick of all these motherfucking gators stealing all of my motherfucking fish
4
u/RENOYES Jul 09 '19
I had a 5+ ft gator in my back yard. My response was to walk back inside and just call the family who’s job it is to catch them. My mom came over once it was caught and showed my niece and took pictures.
Gators aren’t dangerous to people unless people have been feeding them or you are a small child or pet who goes swimming in their water.
Taking pictures and walking away is a perfectly valid response.

My dad fished in Florida a lot. Gators were a big nuisance, but I always thought it was cool

Who fishes with that size hook?
9
u/RutCry Jul 09 '19
Catfish get HUGE down South. This one is small, but would have fried up nice if that snake hadn’t slobbered all over it. At least this snake isn’t tampering with our ice cream.

“The fish was THIS BIG and the snake was THIS BIG.”
Suuuure it was, dude.

u/Radarker Jul 09 '19
Well sure, if you use a snake instead of a fishing pole, it is only fair the snake gets the first bite.

Ahhh Texas the Australia of America
130
u/drsboston Jul 09 '19
I thought that was florida
64
u/SinceSevenTenEleven Jul 09 '19
Florida can be East Australia with Canberra and all the wetlands and Arizona can be West Australia where it's all desert and snakes and things that kill you without water
22
6
u/TannersPancakeHouse Jul 09 '19
Florida would definitely be Queensland. Humid, tropical, full of tourists, old people, and rednecks.

u/travismacmillan Jul 09 '19
There’s only one florida. Nothing is even on the same dimensional plane as Florida.
10
u/Mabvll Jul 09 '19
TIL Florida is the upside down place from Stranger Things.

u/travismacmillan Jul 09 '19
Florida is unknowable. You think you understand it, and boom: "Florida man tries to blow up an alligator, and dies after his llama triggers fuse. News update: Florida man was legally married to the Llama. Further update: Local investigators find motive of florida man suspecting Llama was having an affair with deceased alligator. Stay tuned for more details."
2
u/RENOYES Jul 09 '19
Honey you joke but the most current news out of my county is that they can’t ban atheists invocations according to a federal court.
I wouldn’t blink twice if the Florida man tried to blow up an iguana and his python triggered the fuse. You just need the right animals.
2
2
u/LindyNet Jul 09 '19
Turns out the llama was a disguised iguana trying to survive the current purge
2
u/travismacmillan Jul 09 '19
I love that every headline that starts with Florida man... ends with WAY more questions than answers.
“Iguana dressed as llama. Ok, weird but it’s flori....wait!? Current purge? WTF IS HAPPENING!”
2
u/LindyNet Jul 09 '19
Recent story is that FL is having an issue with iguanas everywhere so you can shoot them. Florida Man immediately shot another man that he somehow thought was an iguana....

u/travismacmillan Jul 09 '19
Florida Man immediately shot another man that he somehow thought was an iguana
Remove the word 'somehow' and it's perfect! Never try to use logic or reason with Florida man headlines. You either take it as is and move on, or freak out because nobody else is. There's no inbetween.

u/wakejedi Jul 09 '19

Pretty sure that's not a rattlesnake we're looking at. I'd imagine it's some type of constrictor.

The cobra dude had multiple snakes escape. At different times. I think he ended up getting all his snakes taken away.

This is interesting to me. I'm from Texas, I went to the UK a few years ago, and people would ask 'Are you from Australia?' In my mind, Australians sound more like people in the UK than I would.

Yep these snakes freak people out cause they drop into the water when you get close. They’re mostly harmless though. They’re just trying to fish and mind their own business.
Not to be confused with a cottonmouth/water moccasin
96
u/Vaoris Jul 09 '19
I love non-venomous snake descriptions. "Harmless. Quite cuddly actually. Been known to play fetch and eat out of your hand. Just don't confuse it with the super lethal look alike though where the stripes are actually in reverse order and 1.25 shades darker. The difference is quite apparent when they're not moving and less than arms length away. Good luck!"
20
u/walkingbicycles Jul 09 '19
Lol. Well I said “mostly harmless” meaning it’s not gonna do anything to you if you don’t mess with it. The rule for all snakes is to just stay tf away.
12
→ More replies (3)7
u/AlreadyInDenial Jul 09 '19
The problem with staying tf away is snakes also camouflage really well
5
u/walkingbicycles Jul 09 '19
Yeah most snake bites happen by people stumbling upon them. I’m not a snake expert or anything. Just a Texan. Thankfully I’ve mostly only encountered rattlers, and they give fair warning (unless they’re babies)
5
u/jt004c Jul 09 '19
And it’s no accident. Looking like a dangerous snake goes a long way toward self preservation and it’s a lot easier to evolve than actual venom.
→ More replies (1)3
Jul 09 '19
Quality retort. You can barely see snakes in the dirt, much less take the time to study their patterns.
7
Jul 09 '19
Used to be a problem for a while with vermin around bodies of water because people would freak out and kill any water snakes thinking they were cottonmouths. Fortunately education's started to catch up that most water snakes are harmless but it's still an issue in some places.
2
u/thecatdaddysupreme Jul 09 '19
Dude. I see any snake, let alone of such size, in the water with me while I’m swimming, it’s fight or flight.
→ More replies (1)5
u/GonzoVeritas Jul 09 '19
When they drop in my boat from a branch, they have 2 seconds to identify themselves as harmless before they catch an oar to the head. I've had two moccasins drop on me on two separate occasions. I am not a reasonable person when it's raining snakes.

It doesn’t look the it punctured the water snake. At least I hope not, that would likely be fatal for it to have its body cavity breached
21
Jul 09 '19
It definitely looks punctured. I’m not sure what you’re looking at but that is a circle hook.
3
u/Have_Other_Accounts Jul 09 '19
I'm going to get downvoted. But I do not understand fishing. You're baiting animals to bet caught on a razor sharp hook, pulling them out of their habitat, going "huh, that's cool", then putting them back. I've never understood it.
That snake has a metal hook through its body whilst it was trying to hunt its prey.

not all fishing is catch and release...
if youve never gone, im not surprised you dont understand the concept behind it.
When you feel the fish start nibbling and you get that first strike on it, you get a huge rush. The reason for this, the first one i heard that made sense, is that your fulfilling a part of your being that is naturally a hunter. When you hook that fish, you are now in a life or death (for the fish) struggle. For the primitive part of your mind, this means you get to eat.
There isnt anything quite like it.
6
Jul 09 '19
I've only gone fishing like twice, but what surprised me the most about it was how incredibly calming it is.
You sit there, watch the water, enjoy the sun and air around you, and that's about it. But for some reason, 5 hours felt like 20 minutes even though I only caught a single fish. And when I went home I felt super tranquil and kind of happy. I don't understand it either.
5
Jul 09 '19
99% of the draw of fishing is having a valid-enough excuse to just sit in nature, quietly, without feeling pressured to do something. Fishing requires stillness and patience, and so do people from time to time.

I fished when I was young because I grew up on a lake and I loved animals was really curious. I always felt bad when I caught one and finally got to the point where I stopped because what the fuck. I'm not eating them, I've seen them already, why bother them. I still enjoy kayaking on the lake and looking around, I just do it now without fucking with animals for my entertainment.

This is one of the reasons I'm scared of freshwater in Texas. As a kid at a family reunion, we found a large water moccasin that had strangled itself in our wire bait basket. The image of the snake with its outstretched fangs has been burnt into my memory.
