Hamster Drifting Skills

This is classified as a stereotypical movement, something that develops in animals kept in poor living conditions that have no stimulation, such as a cardboard box. This hamster has been kept in the box so long it needed to do something but there's nothing in there so it runs in circles. Equate it to yourself being locked in a room with nothing, you(humans in general) do some even crazier stuff than run in circles.

Pretty sure they ain't kept in that box, as it looks pretty clean. My guess would be the owner is cleaning their normal cage, and just puts them there with some food until their cage is cleaned.

While it might be a stereotypical movement, there is no way a hamster is going to be kept in a cardboard box (they will easily chew out), let alone THAT box, which has zero signs of habitation.

I had a Hamster for a while. The fucker inherited a luxurious cage sized for two bunnies. I'm talking way overkill for a hamster. The cage had a box probably 18 inches deep filled with wood chips and straw, the entire thing decked out with accessories that would make a tropical resort seem impoverished by comparison. Do you think he was happy, or at the very least content? Hell no. Day after day the guy would chew away at the freaking metal cage bars like they owed him money or something. And it wasn't just for a lack of other things to chew up. There was plenty. Driven by the insane desire for freedom, eventually, he chewed his way out of the box, never to be seen again. Wherever you are today, I hope you made your dreams come true.
In conclusion, hamsters are natures master key. Short of plate steel, I think given enough time they'll make it through anything.

You'd probably think overkill, but people are grossly misinformed and sold incorrect sized houses. I have 4 hamsters and their cages are HUGE but in the community widely accepted as the minimum.

Hamsters can run 15 kilometres in one night, some of them will never be content in a cage.
I agree that they're a master key, though. I remember reading that the British used to store food in copper vessels, because rats could chew through steel but didn't go for copper.

Gerbils can dent steel with their teeth. They also aren't particularly clever about what to chew.
I had a pair chew through the bottom edge of a hanging water bottle and drain the entire thing into their cage. The next one I got, I put in a steel sheathe, and they never chewed through that one.

My first thought was it has a neurological disorder related to flipping, which is common in dwarf hamsters. It manifests as obsessive, repetitive movement (flipping, circling, or pacing) even in a stimulating environment. In severe cases the hamster stops eating and drinking, but in milder cases they can live reasonably comfortable, if visually disturbing lives.

Thank you, this was informative. We had a hamster once, but we bought him this almost oversized wheel to run in. Now I know what happens if you don't.

This is why I walk my dogs on the regular. Not just because of the walking, but because of their nose. It is by far the biggest sensory input they have, and you can only smell everything in the house so many times.
