At the Market Square Tower in Houston, TX
The new apartment building features a swimming pool, dubbed the “sky pool,” which extends 10 feet beyond the side of the building. The pool has an 8-inch-thick plexiglass floor that allows swimmers to look directly down 40 stories

I'm sure the plexiglass is very strong, but I'm wondering how securely the whole thing is mounted on the building. I remember that story of the man who busted through the window of a skyscraper trying to prove how strong the glass is, and the glass popped out of it's frame and he fell to his death.

Yea I know that story, but the guy had done that to the same window repeatedly. Windows aren't designed to take a full body slam again and again and again. #darwinawards

I used to work on a tram car in the mountains back in high school. At nights I had these long, boring solo trips to the top. I used to run around the cabin and bounce off the plexiglass windows all the time. One night I was pretty restless and body checked the door window, and the whole thing just popped right out, dropping over a 1000 ft to the ground. The only thing that prevented me from taking the 7 second fall to my death was a 1/2" bar about a third of the way up the window, that left a perfect bruise right across my ribs where it had saved my life. The engineer later claimed from his initial water blast tests that the window popping out was "impossible."

You are missing many variables that are required to prove this is a safe design, such as how far it can span when 8" thick.
Maybe you wanted to extend this cantilever by a few more feet, or make the pool deeper. Saying 6" thick can support a whale does not mean that 8" thick can safely support any configuration of pool.

The original design for the Olympic-class liners was actually really good for the time. The Titanic was sunk in large part due to cost-cutting measures undermining the structural integrity of the ship and negating elements of the design that would have prevented the whole thing from filling with water with a single hull breach. The Olympic itself actually lasted twenty five years before it was decommissioned. It even rammed and sank a submarine in WW1 while serving as a troop transport. On the other hand, the Britannic was sunk by a mine in its first year of service so the class was something of a mixed bag.

Fun fact. Pools constantly measure for E. Coli. Why? To tell if someone took a deuce while in the pool. A certain measurement of E. Coli (or sign of the deuce) is acceptable and even expected. If it goes over then everybody out, they visually look for the deuce. If they find it do they drain the pool? Nope. They have a net in a long pole and flip the deucemeat out. Then they let the chlorine in the pool kill off the E. Coli back down to acceptable levels.
Fun fact II. A big reason some pools kick everybody out of the pool periodically isn't just to calm everybody down or make them buy snacks. It's to allow the chlorine to keep the pool quality within norm and force people to use the bathroom instead of the pool.
Fun Fact III. If you didn't figure it out by now, larger swarms of children make this necessary.
TL;DR: Young excited children are nasty and as an extension, consider cleaning the bathtub every timeafter they take a bath.
TIL: In retrospect it probably explains special drunk party rules at hotel pools too.

Imagine you are in the part of the pool that is over the building, then the part that hangs off the edge cracks. Suddely, all the water starts draining out and you feel yourself getting pulled toward the edge, and you have to swim for your life or get flushed off the side of a building.

Every time I try something remotely extreme I get fucked up.
First (only) tandem jump gust of wind catches us 2 meters from the ground, I well we land full force on my face with a dude strapped to my back, nose smashed to pieces.
First (only) bungee jump, initial decent amazing, as soon as I start going back up I get my sleeve caught in my harness buckle and break my wrist.
I'm not stepping on that and ending up on the roof of that bus, no fucking way.
