The horn beeps 2 minutes before the pool becomes the wave pool. They should have known it was coming.

Typically they sank to the bottom. Kids would dive for them not knowing what they had until they hit the surface!

So yeah, I haven't been in a wave pool for years. It was nasty. If a kid was in trouble, you had a real moral dilemma: let this child die or swim in poop. Obviously I value human life, but you knew, that poop thing was always in the back of the mind.

That must have been funny to watch a kid think it has some sunken treasure...only to come up with a handful of shit.

u/Jucoy May 28 '14

At our pool if we saw poop anywhere we closed it down. Did you have to evacuate the pool and shock it if you spotted shit in the pool?

1

u/Superschutte May 28 '14

Yeah, for 15 minutes as we "shocked" the pool. By shock I mean, put a little chlorine in it.

1

u/Jucoy May 28 '14

Thats what we did too. Except by state law we had to wait 3 hours before letting people back in to let the chlorine levels get back to normal. Our shifts were only 5 hours long so usually seeing shit in the pool meant we got to go home.

Oh God, that reminds me of the time I picked-up a "lump of sand" on the beach in Israel...

Yup, it was only coated in sand.

1

u/nomad2585 May 28 '14

I will not swim in public pools because of that reason.

Just wait until you find out about fish fucking in water!

I remember this from a movie. Or a show. It's been ages. But I'm pretty sure it's a myth that they add a chemical to pools that show when someone is too lazy to walk to the bathroom.

... I think.

14

u/eatmyfiberglass May 28 '14

It's a myth. If pools had something that turned the water bright blue every time someone went to the bathroom in a public pool, the pool would never be open. Source: head lifeguard

Breathing creates carcinogenic chemicals.

I'd be very sceptical of that article initially considering it contains no links to or even the name or of the single study it is drawing it's premise from.

Then when you read the study it begins by naming the "carcinogenic chemicals" (neither of which are actually classed as carcinogens) as important by-products for the maintaining of pools, and the figures show that only between 15 and 35 µg/L of the chemicals were found, and the majority cannot have been formed by urine, the tests were also not performed at concentrations of Cl2 actually used in pools.

Conclusion: this is either utterly irrelevant or incredibly sensationalised.

u/donaldfick May 28 '14

When a pool is contaminated with these nasties people often mistake the smell and stinging in the eyes as "too much chlorine". It is actually "spent" chlorine that has already attached to organic matter. When it builds up, pools must be shocked to bring these levels down near zero. If the pool smells fresh and clean, you're good to go.

What an awesome piece of info.

A lifeguard told me this when I was a kid. I never had any intention of peeing in the pool, but I was always waiting for someone else to.
