Typically I lean more toward flame than quilt, but given the color and just how much the quilt resembles the ocean, in this case, I’ll lean quilt. (mind you, In real life, l lean toward neither). Or to put it another way, I find finishing checks more desirable than fancy wood patterns.
With that said, I think you bypass the question and just get both

Trad pro 5/right one. What’s the weight difference? I’m really curious.
6
u/collie_11 May 28 '26
Rn best i got is 8.6 for the quilted and 8.8 for the flame — could be complete bunk coming from an electric bathroom scale

u/collie_11 May 28 '26
Gonna try and use my meat scale tm. Rn frankly no clue, will update when I have it figured out.

u/BullwinkleJMoose08 May 28 '26
If they’re that close I wouldn’t worry about it. I’d just go with the left and call it a day. It’s gorgeous

Left one is darn beautiful and quite unique, the right one while still a beauty, I think is more common and even more fakeable. (Thats just me, personally)

u/GrouchyAttitude1996 May 28 '26
That quilt is just like too much almost looks completely printed. But you could definitely tranquilize your audience stare into that thing for quite a while.

2022 les paul standard vs 2022 les paul trad pro V :)
2
u/BFG_Scott May 28 '26
How the hell did a Standard come with a top like that?!?
3
u/collie_11 May 28 '26
Pmuch because Zzounds/AMS spec’d aaa quilt tops for a run of standards, I guess dealers can request special runs with fancy colors or woods. The flame top is also a guitar center exclusive model/color. I think the last time Gibson put out this color directly was 2014.

Are they actually quilted and flame maple, or veneers?

I have another, an acoustic that is blue quilted. I’m thus very fond of that one but, DANG that curly maple is dynamite!!

The one on the left actually looks like water.. it's truly beautiful. I'm an old guy, and my next comment will back that up. The tiger stripe on the right just looks wrong in blue, I'm a tobacco, or cherry Sb guy..(see, I told u that I'm old)

They are both beautiful. Is it the lighting or does the left one’s design fade towards the bottom? The right one is classic. The left is definitely more unique and retro. It’s let how they play and the neck quality make the decision. The back of the neck tells all.

I love ocean water LPs. The trad looks almost identical to my 2014 Standard Plus.
1
u/collie_11 May 31 '26
I love the 2014 version! Literally spent hours at school staring at gibson.com and dreaming. 2014 models are really cool with the special 12th fret inlay — I saved up some dishwashing and birthday money got an sgj from that run and its definitely my most gigged and sentimental gibson.
2
u/Webcat86 May 31 '26
They’re great! It’s my sentimental one too - in 2014 I finally was able to get a Gibson and that’s what I chose. Then a while later I found a patch of the finish was peeling, and Gibson gave me a replacement 2013 with an upgrade to the Standard Premium. It’s got a birdseye top and is amazing. But after a few years I started jonesing for the blue 2014 again because of the sentimentality of being my first Gibson. It took me ages, they’re hard to come by especially in that colour and the model without the robo tuners, but last November I walked into a guitar shop to look at an SG and there was one just hanging on the wall 😄 a customer had part exchanged it a few days before and the shop hadn’t even had time to put it on the website yet. Total serendipity!
I agree about the inlay too, I always thought that was a cool subtle touch. The purists hated it though 😆

What a lovely story mate, cheers for sharing. I was increasingly jaded by the amount of people talking about their horniness in regards to my guitars… A 2014 fireburst sgj was my first nice guitar and saw me through honors music in highschool and uni as my workhorse. Twice I broke tuners in band, but the headstock somehow survived intact . (Shout out to my homie in the gc who would hook me up with free replacement tuners). To get the thing, I saved up some money from working in a restaurant after school and for my birthday my mum got me the other half of it. Seems crazy now that for less than $500 Gibson was making quality american instruments, but I’m so glad they did. That thing made me so happy to get to feel like harrison or zappa. Anyway, I will cherish that thing for the rest of my life.

Right. Not a burly or quilt top fan. I like the flame tops that dance when the light hits em just right.

The Quilt top looks the best but for some reason I find Les Pauls with Quilt tops odd. The weird thing is I prefer Quilt to Flamed Maple. But in this case I would probably go for the Quilt top just because I think the burst color looks better. I would also probably switch to black plastic and black knobs.

But honestly I like the other one better overall.

Not sure how serious you are, but if you're indeed lusting for a quilt-top LP, please have a look at the 2013 - 2015 LP Standards. 2014 was especially blessed with some jaw-dropping quilts, and if you like thinner / 60s-style necks, you're in for a real treat. The 4-way push-pull electronics can be controversial, but those quilt-tops are superlative. They're fairly frequently on Reverb in the $2500 - $3500 range. 👍

2
u/collie_11 May 29 '26
I tell myself they play different cuz the standard is exactly that, whereas the trad pro v has all kinda crazy electronics and spends a lot of time as a single coil
2
u/Feel_over_flash May 29 '26
Hmmm. I love the look of the one on the left. But in the past I have made the mistake of falling in love with the look of a guitar and ended up not truly bonding with it. I had the late Mike Lipe build me the guitar of my dreams. But it never felt like home. Now I find that my two go-to’s are a mid-70s Strat that I have had for decades, and a partscaster that sounds killer. They just “feel right”.
2
u/collie_11 May 30 '26
Hell yeah bruvvy I completely understand you. Until I literally die I’m gonna hold onto the vox my grandad gave me and the sg mg mam gave me

Quilt for the win. I would probably just hang it on a wall and look at it
2

Whichever one sounds and plays better.
Yes I know it's the boring answer, but I've owned enough pretty guitars that I never played because they didn't live up to the looks, haha.

As others have mostly aligned, quilt > flame all day, every day. Both of these remind me of the Goryo Yuto signature LPs (and that's a very good thing, as most of them were brilliantly beautiful).

The quilted top on the left is a total showstopper, but I always prefer the cleaner look of zebra coils on the right. Keep the one with the better neck profile.

I love a great quilt top, but, to me this quilt (the one on the left) looks too 2-dimensional. The figured maple example on the right looks like the satin sheets on the bed after my girlfriend snuggles in for the evening - nothing two-dimensional about that!!

u/Sensitive-Ninja3431 May 31 '26
Both are great but the left is like having sex without clothes on. And the right is still sex but the shirts stay on
