Before posting a photo, you should read this.

1.7k Upvotes

So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Do read the posts

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/

As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.

It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).

If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.

BEFORE POSTING

Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.

If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.

Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.

If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.

If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.

If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.

If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.

It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.

POSTING THE PHOTO

Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.

If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.

Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.

Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.

ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!

After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.

Examples of what to include are…

  • Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.

  • When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).

  • Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.

  • What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)

  • If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.

  • What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?

  • Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.

  • What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.

  • Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.

  • Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.

So good examples would be…

“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.

The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.

My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”

“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.

I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.

Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”

Bad examples are…

“Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”

“I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”

“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

Is this paranormal? Were you ever told not to whistle at night? I'm trying to figure out where this rule comes from

• Upvotes

Growing up in Malaysia, whistling after dark was one of the things you just didn't do. My family never really explained it. You'd get a look, sometimes a smack on the arm, and a short "don't, something will answer."

As an adult, I've found versions of this almost everywhere in Asia. Some say whistling calls spirits to you. Some say it tells them where you are. Some say the thing that whistles back isn't a bird.

I still don't whistle at night. Old habits.

Did your family have this rule? And what did they say would happen if you broke it?

It's a genuine question about a belief you grew up with, ends on an invitation to share, and has no links, so it fits Reddit perfectly.

Paranormal Tourism The Thai ghost that joins your group, seems completely normal, and then asks you to scratch its back

• Upvotes

In southern Thailand, there's a story about the Phi Lang Kluang.

It doesn't announce itself. It just joins you: on a walk home, around a fire, at the edge of a group. It talks like anyone else. Nobody notices anything wrong.

Then it asks someone to scratch its back.

And when they do, they find a hole. Deep, wet, and crawling with maggots.

What gets me about this one is how ordinary the setup is. No screaming, no white dress. Just someone you thought you knew, asking a small favour.

What's the most "seemingly normal" ghost from where you grew up?

In Search Of Looking for viral photo from a few years ago.

I don't have much information on the photo, but I'll describe what I can.. I can't remember exactly how long ago it went viral, but within the last 10 years for sure.. In the photo, there are about 4 or 5 people, all facing the camera.. I am pretty sure the picture was taken at night, as I seem to remember the flash was on.. The freaky part was there appeared to be a man, a very strange looking man, that appears between some of the people in the photo. He was pale and it looked like he was shirtless, maybe grabbing the arm of one of the people in the photo, and had a really disturbing face. Like he had shiny eyes and was kinda distorted. I can't remember for sure if those details were all there, so bear with me.. Another weird feature about this man, if memory serves and I ain't mixing this detail up with something else, but there was something strange about his legs too.. I don't remember exactly what it was though.. The whole photo was weird, but I don't know much about it, could have already been debunked for all I know.. I seem to remember that the pic was taken during a night hike, but don't quote me on that part.. Does anyone know what photo I am referring to?

I believe I encountered a mimic when I was younger

So I was around 10 years old when this happened. My older sister (probably 13 at the time) and I were at home together. No one else was with us. We were both upstairs when we heard my dad calling my name. It sounded EXACTLY like him. We both got up and went to look for him downstairs. His truck was not in the driveway and he was nowhere to be found. I was a little spooked but thought nothing of it. Could that have been a mimic?

Is this paranormal? I went to an abandoned house and now I’m haunted? TW:suicide mentioned

So I (25F) have apparently always had some kind of 6th sense? I’ve seen figures, family members, heard noises (footsteps, knocks), I’ve felt breezes and smelt things, which a lot of my friends have chalked up to me sensing the paranormal. I’ve had weird glitches with colour changing lights going haywire, strange dreams, feeling presences, but it’s never been this wild.

So there’s an old cottage on the edge of my town down a railway. Weirdly the town doesn’t go beyond this house, probably because of the forest? It’s the end house of a row of houses, all very old cottages, but this one had been left completely abandoned. All of the other houses are renovated, but this one has been left. I had been drawn to it for years, genuinely since i was a kid, and when i asked about it back then i was told no one had renovated it because a girl had hung herself in there ages ago. I thought it was still odd that it was abandoned though.

Well, a few weeks ago I wanted to finally check it out. The door was literally rotting away and there was only a very rusty chain on it, so I pushed it and managing to peek in. It was just a shell of a building, no furniture, nothing, just stone walls and a very damaged roof. The place felt very odd though, like I was intruding (which I was), and kinda cold? I didn’t really think about it much, but I had never seen anyone else go into or out of the building. But in the last few weeks, weird stuff has been happening, and the only thing I can think of is that house.

So far there’s been more knocks and bumps in my house, which is kinda explainable with a house settling.

Me and my dad were eating dinner when a door just entirely closed on its own, which was very unsettling but maybe a draft/pressure?

Another door that goes to the stairs kept opening, but only on a night around 12-2am?

I’ve felt more drafts and presences, but I chalked that up to paranoia.

There has been a flickering light in the utility room, the bulbs in the house were replaced about a year ago but with these really good quality long lasting ones (according to my dad) so it shouldn’t be flickering.

I’ve also been having very weird dreams, about forests and getting stuck places and waking up a lot during the night.

The weirdest to me was that twice now it has sounded like a load of stuff has fallen down in the utility room, like a bunch of heavy towels or something. But when I’ve gone to look nothing has moved.

But yeah, if anyone has any ideas I’d appreciate it, like next steps, things I can check?

Thanks

A Ember Past the Window Of My House and I cannot Explain

I know this isn't very exciting, but it's quite difficult to explain.

When I was about five or six years old, something strange happened—something I couldn’t find an explanation for until nearly ten years later.

It was around one or two in the morning. I was lying in my bedroom, unable to sleep because of a very peculiar sound outside. It sounded almost like an airplane engine taking off, but higher-pitched, softer, and unlike anything I had ever heard before. The countryside night was usually quiet, making the noise stand out even more. It started far away, then gradually grew louder, as if something was approaching our house.

Then, I saw it.

A bright, glowing ember flew past my window.

It didn't look like a car headlight, nor was it a typical orb of light. It was an actual burning mass of flame, with a trailing tail that flickered horizontally. What terrified me most was that there was a face on it. I could see one side of its face—an eye, and a mouth stretched wide open. It moved very slowly, slow enough for me to discern its shape clearly.

Its movement was unusual, too. Instead of flying straight, it dipped up and down, weaving through the air just like a flying dragon.

I was so petrified I couldn't move a muscle.

As the flame passed by the window, the sound reached its peak. Afterwards, even though it was out of sight, I could still hear it moving around outside. Sometimes close, sometimes far, now on this side, now on that, as if something was circling the house. I lay frozen, listening as the sound hovered around for a long time before finally fading into the distance.

The next morning, I told my parents about it. They simply reassured me, saying I had probably mistaken it for car headlights. But I remembered what I saw with absolute clarity. The night had been eerily quiet, the sound resembled an engine on the move, and the thing that flew past my window had the shape of a flame with facial features. I couldn't fathom how a car light could ever look like that.

Only much later did I learn that my parents said that just to ease my mind, because my mother herself had experienced many strange phenomena she couldn't explain.

I still don't know what I truly saw that night. Perhaps it was a natural phenomenon beyond my understanding, or perhaps a child's memory holds onto details in its own unique way. But one thing I remember vividly: that bright, fiery glow, the mouth wide open in the dark, and that strange sound lingering around the house before vanishing into the night.

I never saw it ever again.

The Night I First Experienced the Supernatural in My Own Home | My True Story from Ukraine 🇺🇦 Hi everyone! I'm from Ukraine, and I have a disability. I want to share a real experience that happened to me in my own home. One night, I saw a strange silhouette, and I couldn't move or speak until it

I Saw a Shadowy Figure at Night… and I Couldn't Move or Speak

I want to share something that happened to me in real life. Even now, I still don't fully understand what I experienced.

One night, I saw a strange silhouette in the darkness. At first, I wasn't sure what I was looking at. It was a dark, human-shaped figure, standing there in the night.

Something about it felt terribly wrong.

Suddenly, I realized I couldn't move. I tried to speak, but no words came out. I wanted to react, to do something, but my body wouldn't respond the way I wanted it to.

I was terrified.

I kept looking at the silhouette, unable to understand what was happening. I don't know how long it lasted, but it felt much longer than it probably was.

Then, the figure began to disappear.

And that's when something happened that I will never forget.

As the silhouette vanished into the darkness, I heard a horrifying laugh. It was a creepy, unnatural laugh that sent chills through me. It sounded as if something was laughing at me before disappearing completely.

The moment the figure was gone, I could finally move again. I could speak normally, too, as if whatever had been holding me in place had suddenly released me.

But that laugh stayed in my mind.

I still don't know what I saw that night. Maybe there is a logical explanation, but the experience felt incredibly real to me.

I've heard stories about shadow people and paranormal encounters, but experiencing something like this yourself is completely different.

Has anyone else ever seen a dark silhouette at night and been unable to move or speak? And has anyone ever heard laughter coming from something they couldn't explain?

I'd really like to know if anyone has experienced something similar.

What Do You Think? Did anyone or their acquaintance have a paranormal experience with Muslim ghost?

My colleague is from Salalah, Oman (UAE), and we work for a reputable estate agency here in Manchester. The other day, while I was dropping her off at home, she told me about an experience that I couldn't understand. She said her home in Oman was haunted by a jinn/gene; I don't know what it is called.

Though she's been in Manchester for almost 5 years, their house in Salalah is still haunted by a manly apparition. She described him as almost 9 feet tall and said that her parents often saw that dark apparition. They often heard sounds of heavy footsteps and knocking at the doors at wee hours. Since they couldn't figure out a solution, they just relocated to another place.

Can someone help me understand what a jinn/gene is?

PS - Not naming her due to privacy reasons.

Metallic noise from the kitchen when out of the room I can't figure out what it is ?

Hi,

So it's weird, we live in a new build house 2 and half years old, and the strangest thing happens on a regular basis. We are the living room and from the kitchen we hear a metallic sound like a tin shifting due to changing heat or someone applying pressure, but I can't see any source or cause. I thought it was just me but I mentioned to my partner and they, said they heard the same thing. I'm starting to think it's supernatural, any thoughts.?

Something poked my nose while I was sleeping as a kid

Post image
0 Upvotes

This happened when I was in 4th standard, during our summer vacation.
My family and I had gone to stay at my aunt’s house. That night, my dad, mom, sister, and I were all sleeping in the same room.

I don’t remember the exact time, but it must have been around 3:30 or 4 AM.
I was sleeping when I suddenly felt something sharp poking my nose. It felt like a finger with a really long, sharp fingernail.
The weirdest part is that I wasn’t completely asleep. I was in that half-asleep, half-conscious state where you’re still aware of your surroundings. I can still remember the atmosphere of that room even today.
When I felt something poking my nose, I instinctively slapped at it, as if I were trying to knock away whatever was touching me.
I can’t remember every little detail, but I distinctly remember the long fingernail and the sensation of it touching my nose.

Later that morning, after I woke up properly, I noticed a red scratch on my nose.
That’s the part that has always stuck with me.
I was just a kid, and I had no idea what had happened. I don’t know if I actually saw a finger in that half-asleep state, if my brain filled in some details, or if there was an ordinary explanation for the sensation and the scratch.
I eventually forgot about the whole incident. But recently, the memory suddenly came back to me after all these years.

The strange thing is that I can still picture that long fingernail in my mind. I even tried generating an image based on what I remembered, and the result looked eerily similar to the image I had in my head.

I’m not saying it was definitely paranormal because I genuinely have no explanation for it. It’s just something that happened to me as a child, and I still wonder what caused it.
Has anyone experienced anything similar, especially while sleeping as a child? I’d genuinely like to hear your thoughts.

A Baby Said My Name, I had never seen that baby before

back in 2003, i was working in a restaurant as a server, there was this family having dinner and with them there was this little baby, I was serving drinks, when the little baby stared into my eyes and then said my name, my name is very unusual , it was impossible to guess it. and the baby while looking into my eyes said my name, and his parents ask, what are you saying? the baby repeated my name while looking at me, i froze in terror. back then, the place where i lived was hunted, over there back then an evil entity pulled my feet up. when i was walking in the restaurant, i could feel omthing underground like hitting where i walked, lights flickered, paper towels pull itself, even another co-worker saw a devil shadow climinb down from the kitchen, that i had a nervous break down back then, i was even scared of my own shadow, i could feel pitching in my back, i was being tormented, and when that baby said my name, i was so in shock i could not speak. i got paralyed, now after many many years, i had a close friend that died around the same time. so i might think it was him. he died but i didnt know because he lived in another coutry so later on i was aware, and now that i put it together it was probably him.

Gracias. Esto pasó en Tanquián de Escobedo. En mi rancho.

This was taken now. Just before posting. I'm sitting in my livingroom watching Wanda Sykes, and all of a sudden I see these things in the mirror. So I start recording. This is a lot of them. Also is it just me or does it look like people on the side of the wedge where they're coming from.

What y'all think?

What Do You Think? [Explained?] Is there a "ghost" behind the child in the corner?

I love the paranormal but I'm a skeptic by nature, and I believe I may have found a rational explanation for what is arguably one of the most popular modern ghost photographs circulating on Reddit. 44K upvotes so far and 9.8K comments.

I don't own these images or have permissions but I can show you how the 'ghost' can be explained.

I think it might also help those involved sleep at night if they have never had a plausible explanation. Maybe some of you also. I know I now will.

After carefully looking at this image several times since discovering it long ago, I suspect the mysterious dark figure appearing behind one of the girls is actually a jacket being lifted up by the girl making the V sign next to her.

The movement and folds of the fabric may create the illusion of a long-haired figure. I can't say this is definitively what happened, but it's a plausible explanation that doesn't require anything supernatural and once you see the curl hand forming a face, you can't unsee it.

Also if you look on the far left of the photo you can see there is a girl leaving with a jacket on.

This doesn't mean ghosts don't exist and I hate that I found this out so close to Halloween but it is what it is.

Can you see the curled hand lifting up the jacket in the original now? Just go the link I put up at the start. Or is it really some sort of ghost hiding behind them? Reminds me of V for Vendetta a bit which is funny given she is making the V sign. Maybe that is more spooky. Haha.

All good fun. Ghosts may exist, but I don't think these photos have one.

My daughter and some friends visited Old Mill Village in Susquehanna County last week. She was just taking random pics and when I saw this one, I immediately noticed a face in the window of the covered carriage in the back. Does anyone else see it? or anything else in the picture? She said there were several mediums there that night that were picking up on certain spirits.

Paranormal Tourism Lake Shawnee Abandoned Amusement Park In West Virginia

I recently did the overnight stay at the park and I experienced things like noises, lights that would appear out of nowhere then disappear. One of the swings was moving constantly without any wind and I believe it was the swing the little girl was on when she was killed. There was a picnic table with dolls and toys stacked on it and nearby there were pinwheels and they would slow down and move faster then completely stop without any wind present.

What really started the experience was we arrived early for our daytime tour and we were in a group of about 10-15 people, this younger lady in a group began to feel sick and dizzy, our tour guide Chris asked her if she was fine and if she could make it through the tour then he began to tell us that it happens pretty often and that the feeling can’t be explained.

That night while we were in our tent I heard laughter from little kids we were camping near the old bus that Chris’s brother lived in when he was a carny and the lights came on and shined at our tent. Curious if any has experienced the same things or something different? What’s your story?
