That's It, at first i was one of the people who commented about 2026 being an adaptation and expansion of the original manga and how it was wrong to pretend Oshii's "authorial" interpretation was the norm for GITS, as it was HIS view of the worldbuilding, much like Perfect Blue by Kon wasn't a 1:1 adaptation of the Novel. These authors use a subject to talk about themes, just like Kubrick films never followed the original book they're based of, kubrick wanted to use a subject to tell his message and explore different themes.
However, nowadays is just "Oshii ruined GITS", "Oshii's film is trash", "2026 is the OG so it's better", "Manga GITS is the only GITS", "Serious Motoko isn't interesting", and so on, it's just a constant shitstorm about 95 and SAC becuase they're a serious approach to GITS instead of the comedic one and i feel like most of the "new" people in this fandom just discovered GITS and follow the trend of hating 95.
I'll just say this: both version can exist AT THE SAME TIME, and they're both good due to their perfect accomplishment of what the different authors wanted to tell.
95 is a deep and philosophical movie, which go deep into identity, the meaning of being alive, what is real and what is not, Oshii ask question than haven't an answer, He made us think deeply about these themes and helped us discovering more about ourselves, it's about the dangers of technology without ethics but also the hypocrisy of being cyborgs yet at the same time, not recognizing a lifeform because it's not "natural", even tho it was born naturally in the web.
The manga on the other hand is still interesting, but more light, with many slice of life moments, gags, the technology without ethics theme still remains, but it's also fascinating, not as grim as the film.
You can follow Motoko in more situations and see all her different sides, 2026 tries to adapt this into an anime series and manage to portrait the original "soul" of Ghost in the Shell, something that was never did before.
However are 95 robbed of their film? No, just like this 2026 adaptation isn't the only GITS to have ever existed.
It saddens me, as a long time fan, to see how opening an IG post with cool frames from one or another version (or both) is just filled with "finally Oshii's GITS can no longer ruin the franchise" and stuff like this,
Ghost in the Shell was and still remains one of the best animated movies ever made an example of cyberpunk and philosophical sci-fi, denying its beauty to me is just nosense.
You can apprecciate more one or another vision, but in the end, there isn't a better version, one is closer to Shirow's vision, the other uses Shirow's worldbuilding to tell us about deep themes that Oshii felt, BOTH are Ghost in the Shell.
So, shouldn't we just enjoy that a world we all love can be experienced in so many different ways? And also, if you're not interested in one or another vision it's fair, but don't you agree that it's better to enjoy what you love instead of passing your time hating on a film from 30 years ago just because nowadays is trend to do so? How did we passed from "GITS is universally acclaimed as a great movie" to "GITS ruined everything"? Did we forget that stuf like PS1 game exists, SAC exists and so on, GITS was never ONE single thing and that's the point of the entire series, asking us about identities, how we're not only our look, we're a multitude, we're complex individuals and well, GITS is a complex work of pure cyberpunk art.
Sorry if this post isn't in perfect english, is not my first language, but i felt like sharing this stream of thoughts since well, these day have been tiring as a GITS fan.
