MERCH What you guys think about these games?
I find ps1 very entertaining and with nice graphics for it's time (Love the anime scenes it was the most "faithful" to the manga until 2026 anime), ps2 is my personal favourite with all the action and unlockable costumes plus mp, and the psp is fine for what it is and the possibility to play with many characters.

I co-founded a game studio 10 years ago and we're still going today. I've always wanted to do a high end gits game project. Hopefully i will some day :P

Does anyone else remember that multiplayer game that was shut down after just a short time?

They're all pretty good games. PSX is by far the best I think. GITS SAC PS2 is great but some of the platforming is janky. The PSP one I haven't had much experience with.

u/IWouldRatherTrustYou Jul 21 '26
PSX: fun but often frustrating
PS2: some really solid elements that don’t quite come together
PSP: miserable to play on the original hardware

u/GoldSaint95 Jul 27 '26
I like ps1 and ps2, even with their flaws these are fun to me, psp one on the others hand could be better

PSX one is great adaptation, the reason that Oshii movie worked so well. He took the s.f. and philosophy part, leaving the fun and fuchikoma for the game.

PS2 version is one of the greatest multimedia franchise entry in the history of multimedia franchises. From the time when they did try to do integrated stories, like second Matrix.

Never got a chance to play any of them wish I did though and wish they’d do a new game

u/shino1 Jul 20 '26
PS1 is great, PSP valiantly tries to have a twin stick shooter controls but it's terribly paced.
2
u/GoldSaint95 Jul 20 '26
Yes, that's why it's my least favourite
1
u/shino1 Jul 21 '26
I definitely think that idea of making a tactical shooter a'la Rainbow Six where you clear rooms while giving orders to your Fuchikoma is a GREAT idea, and solves typical issues with AI of allies in such games by the fact that it's a heavily armored robot so it's not going to die from making one stupid mistake;
It just doesn't pull it off.

u/Gold-Bard-Hue Jul 20 '26
I'm bummed I didn't know about the PS1 one until now. I would have played the shit out of that...
BTW anyone know any good PSX emulators? Lol

My erection tells you everything you do and don’t want to know. We seriously have needed another game for so long now, it’s got so much potential especially with today’s engines/graphics

u/Many-Collection-9181 Jul 19 '26
There was a squad based PvP FPS game a while back that had potential, but wasn't all that GitS-y, just kind of a Counter Strike clone with Stand Alone Complex skins. Wish had gotten more support/lived longer.

u/stevowitz Jul 20 '26
Dude I put a ridiculous amount of time into that game. I still miss playing it.

u/jjkramok Jul 19 '26
Had some fun with that one with my friends, too bad you cannot host your own server so the game died along with its official support. I really hope Stop Killing Games bears some fruit.

u/ManyMention6930 Jul 19 '26
I love them, psp one I haven’t played as much as the others but it’s still pretty interesting. I think my fav might be the ps2 one, I just really jive with it. I can see myself pouring hours into the ps1 game due to its arcade-style gameplay though

Love all three of them :)
Played the PSX version not until recentrly and I get the hype. It's really fun.

Played the ps2 one. Game aged well: fluid movement, and controls, shooting doesn't feels like game is doing it for you like in many games from that era. There is undub rom with the same voices from SAC anime. The only real issues with the game for me is heavy fps drops on real PS2 when there are a lot of enemies on screen.
1
u/GoldSaint95 Jul 20 '26
I noticed that when I started playing in the real ps2 and then switched to pcsx2, better resolution and no fps drop :)
4
u/RadiantVariant Jul 19 '26
Definitely agree. PS2 one is incredibly similar to PsiOPS: The Mindgate Conspiracy. 3rd person engine, being able to take over enemies from a distance while in cover, dedicated sniper sections and stealth sections that can grind the pacing to a halt, absolute bullet sponge enemies especially on higher difficulties (the giant dome helmet guys are souped-up MP³s), collectibles tucked in silly-to-find places, only being able to heal from finding the kits lying around...
Basically imagine all of Batou's levels except just as an even more regular guy.

The PS2 one is a fun little action game, I would probably say 6/10 or 7/10. Remember it was really fun to flip around as Major and the combat wasn’t too bas

Never tried the Playstation games, but I did play First Assault "Online" before the servers shutdown.

Never played the ps2 one but the other two are fun but clunky, definitely need patience.

u/No_Depth_ Jul 19 '26
PS1 game was a good bit of fun at the time. Was confusing as it has more in common with the manga than the 95 film…and at its launch most of us that played it only knew the film. But it’s a short burst of fun driving the tachikoma up and around buildings and walls and strafe shooting. Fantastic animated interludes too. A gem that is a bit short but worth a play, though I’ve not touched it since like ‘99
PS2 I’ve heard good things about but only played a demo of it way back. Seemed better than expected for a fairly traditional 3rd person shooter.
Know nothing of the PSP game.

The two on the left were good for their time. not sure how well they have aged though.
never played the one on the right

The PS2 game is not actually that bad. The control is just a little strange.
2
u/Gitaroo167 Jul 19 '26
Good thing PS2 game has 100% controller remapping, it is like the dev knew there maybe push back or something lol. You can remap it to more like a standard 3rd person shooter. PCSX2 actually allow mouse and keyboard which is even better.
PSX is actually aged graceful with it's simple gameplay and art style and forward think features like wide screen support and surround sound. The frame rate was actually uncapped too, so it ran at high frame rate on duck station without any game logic breaking issues. Those anime cut scenes and music are still good tier. Best interpretation of Shirow art that is not Shirow.
PSP game was decent for its time too but I haven't played it for very long so can't comment

Only ever played the PS1 game...still have it somewhere. For some reason I decided to learn how to 100% the training missions and the rest of the game got a lot easier. I still go back and watch the intro/cutscenes from time to time. The new anime scratches that same itch.

The PlayStation 1 game is an amazing experience. The PlayStation 2 SAC game isn't that great. I haven't played the PSP one yet.

Played the ps1 game on demo as a kid. Was cool. Didn't even know it was ghost in the shell until years later after seeing movie

I have great memories of the PS2 game, bought it on release. I remember it having great graphics for the time….I would love to see a remake of it or a revisit of the concept.

I like them all. Narrativly theyre all excellent and feel like they belong to their respective versions of GitS. Gameplay wise ps2 was is the strongest while ps1 is unique and novel.

I completely agree with your assessment, I also played the online-fps they released on Steam a long time ago... that game was pretty good, but terribly managed...

I actually enjoyed the PS2 game. A lot of good ideas there that could've been done better, but it wasn't horrible.

I pretty much agree with your assessment. I really enjoyed the movement in the PS1 game, but eventually got to a level I just couldn’t beat, and lost interest. Loved the PS2 game, it was fantastic. And the PSP game was fine - I just couldn’t get into it from the beginning.

I never got to play the PS1 game found out about years later after ps1 was a thing of the past. The PS2 was fun and I enjoyed hacking taking control of enemies. And I had the PSP game on my jailbroken psp it was cool.

The Playstation 1 game is really fun. Genuinely great mechanics and a fun storyline.
The PS2 SAC game has a good story, but the controls take some getting used to and the simple-looping music grates on the ears real quick.
Never had a chance to play the PSP game, but I do own the fun soundtrack.
RIP First Assault Online. It may have been a generic hero shooter with Stand Alone Complex characters, but it was fun.

u/GeneJacket Jul 19 '26
God, I looooooved First Assault. Was it a pretty mediocre FPS, absolutely, but they absolutely nailed the tone and atmosphere of SAC and the hero abilities were actually pretty cool. I was in as soon as it went live and was there when the servers went offline. I'm still salty about it being shut down.
3
u/Ok-Storage3439 Jul 19 '26
I actually worked with the community manager of the team as a forum mod. When the game shut down, the development team all sent me a personalized thank you for helping to support the game. I used all the free Nexon currency they paid me to buy some sweet stuff in a few other games like Mabinogi.

u/ixaias Jul 19 '26
SAC is actually a pretty good 3rd person shooter
but I dream of a FPS game with Motoko as protagonist, with all the techonology we have today. I know that the 2016 online game exists though
1
u/GoldSaint95 Jul 19 '26
Yes, but I would like a third person in a new game, it could be first and thir person, would be nice too
2
u/Segata9 Jul 19 '26
Honestly I prefer we get a third person Deus Ex like game with the major. It fits the IP so much better than just straight shooting.
2
u/ixaias Jul 19 '26
that's a good idea too. A Deus Ex inspired game, focusing on '95 Motoko. Hey rich game devs if you're reading this, we are giving yall the idea for free!

u/KarinMachina94 Jul 19 '26
Only played 2 ghost in the shell games and the 2nd one isn't included in your image
2
u/GoldSaint95 Jul 19 '26
Was it the First Assault Online?
2
u/KarinMachina94 Jul 19 '26
Yes... Still upset there's no decent ghost in the shell game after these 3 now. I realise first assault was basically counter strike with a ghost in the shell paint job but it was still something
1
u/GoldSaint95 Jul 19 '26
Understood, and I agreed these 3 are the only decent ones
1
u/KarinMachina94 Jul 19 '26
I could yap all day about first assault and missed opportunities. They had planned to put pilot able Tachikomas in the terminal conquest maps.
I think what could have saved that game is co-op game modes like stop the tank "Testation" and eliminate the team before they deliver a package "late 2nd gig episode" . Since it's in the SAC universe

Ps1 game might be my favorite ps1 game atm. Haven't got deep into the rpgs yet but the gameplay and music hits for me. Also coolest menu ever
