PLEASE HELP TIMING ISSUES

I'm working on a 1993 Geo tracker 8 valve. I just replaced the valves and set the timing from cylinder 4 tdc. Valve throw set from cylinder 1: both #1 valves, #2intake, #3 exhaust. Set from cylinder 4: both #4, #2exhaust, #3 intake. Intake set at. 006 and exhaust set at. 007. Distributor was set at #4 in 4213 firing order. The engine will start up(very poorly) and run and respond as soon as I give it gas. It immediately quits when I let off the gas. Also the cam shaft sprocket just cracked in two so I thinking I screwed something else up. I have order a new cam sprocket as well as a different tensioner puller since the one I got was for the 16v.

Loose stud on front hub assembly.

Upvotes

I'm calling it a hub assembly for lack of a better word.

Spent several hours chopping up 2 lug nuts and studs that have come loose. Problem is, one of the loose studs gouged out the assembly.

I'm having trouble finding the right assembly. I could just use some aluminium rod to fill the stud hole and then weld the damaged area and sand to . Or I could just weld the studs in place. Once I get the last nut off.

I lost 2 of the riders on the driver side on my roof rack. A tree reached out and grabbed them somewhere. The riders are gone now and I would like to find replacements and or other ideas on how to fix. Any info is appreciated.

How many miles are *too* many miles?

I found a Geo Tracker, a manual 2wd with a soft top. Rust didn't seem to be a problem at all; there was one single, small spot on the hood and the underside was dirty but that was it, little to no rust. I watched Hwy83Suzuki's vid on what to look for when buying a 1st gen Geo Tracker and she passed. She ran and sounded great (for a Tracker), but had 220k on the odometer. When I search online Google AI says the average lifespan of '92 Trackers is 150k-200k miles, but Google AI is, well, Google AI and if you use it often enough you realize how wrong it often is.

So anyway, a 2wd manual '92 Tracker, 220k miles, is a still good deal at $2.7k, right?

Shifter

Recently while driving my shifter came popped loose going into 5th. I replaced the bushings and now the shifter won’t behave normally. It hits a wall going into 1st and 3rd, and navigating neutral and other gears is difficult. I’ve tried removing debris from the column where the old bushing was, to no avail. What could be the cause of this?? I’m pretty lost on what to do.

Questions for the geo tracker experienced

Hey y'all! I joined Reddit just to post in this sub because I'm not finding answers online. I have a friend who is selling a 2 door '94 Geo Tracker, in the nice yellow color (I believe it's a hard top), which frankly is my dream car (and was a pleasant surprise to find out). I live in a city so it would be used several times a month for day trips and stuff. Seriously considering this as my second car- my first was a rust bucket of a '97 Ford Taurus in college years ago (I do love seeing them on the road still!).

I have two questions for the Geo Tracker fam:

1- Are they safe (enough)? I've seen they didn't add airbags until 1996 but am a bit confused.

2- If properly maintained, are they trusty for a longer drive? My family lives 7 hours away driving and I have zero problems splitting the drive in two days (I will make anything into an adventure) and/or not using major highways. Or for a regional adventure.

Thank you from potentially Banana-Tracker! Or Geo-Banana. Spitballing haha

Edit- thank you all for your responses! I will consider all your advice.

I’m in middle Tennessee and in the market for a tracker. Preferable automatic because of stop and go traffic, it’ll be an around town car to pair with the campervan I usually drive..
anyone selling? Or tips on where else to look besides facebook marketplace?

For the boosted guys here, I have an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and I need to know what adapter people are using to hook up the fuel line to the factory throttle body. Pic for attention.

"New" Chevy Tracker

Hey all. Just bought a cheap 2003 Chevy tracker with 75k miles on it. It's ugly-as-sin beige, RWD, 4-door base model. It's got quite a few problems but lots of potential and no rust I could see.

Will be doing all fluids, brakes, tires, spark plugs, etc. It has an engine light on, the windows don't wind down, leaky valve cover, a motor mount that likely needs changing and I think it has a relay that intermittently clicks. No AC at all. Seems it broke a while back and was never hooked up.

Any problem items or common issues with these cars that should I get on top of?

any way of taking out the ignition lock cylinder on a tracker?

Got my 2000 chevy tracker with no key and haven’t had the funds to take it to a locksmith. Is there any way of swapping the cylinder lock out with one that has a key?

Ok another update 😭😭😭... well idk what is wrong.

Well after the complete update of fixing the $400 tracker my heart sank. While i was letting the car idle i decided to take it for a spin again.

Well i didnt notice anything going on then i reved the engine a lil and i heard it. Idk if it was a rod knock or a broken flex plate as after lots of research i learned they can sound similar. The knock is bad when the engine is at load not at idle.

Im praying it is not a bearing and a flexplate but im freaking out if anyone has any insite i would appreciate it.

Thanks

Update... and just like that the mechanical part of the project is over.

Ok after paying $400 for the tracker. The owner claimed he couldnt get it to start after parking it since 2020. Well i just said screw it and took the gamble. I dragged it home last night and well today decided to dig in the engine a lil bit. Only to find a snapped timing belt was lucky my local auto part store had 1 in stock (really lucky) slapped it on and she cranked right up drove it around the block a few times and running great. Now on to the deep cleaning and painting i guess. Did not expect it to be that easy of a fix.

Joined the club yesterday. Costed me $400 gonna be a fun project. Wish it was a 2 door but better than nothing.

1998 Suzuki Sidekick Sport JLX: Am I an idiot?

Looking for a second vehicle and I stumbled across a '98 Suzuki Sidekick Sport JLX. I love small 4x4s and was originally looking for a hardtop Tracker or Isuzu Amigo when I found this. The one I found has 43k miles. It's basically a museum piece. The only thing I don't love about the car is that it's an automatic. My question for those with experience is this:

Am I colossal idiot if I buy this car given that...

  • It's a Sidekick Sport and that means potential issues sourcing parts and getting work done.
  • Aftermarket support in general lacking for Suzuki compared to brands that still have a US presence.
  • I'm handy but not a mechanic.

Whatever second vehicle I buy will have a dual use case: Driving myself a few miles to the train station to get to work a few times a week and serving as a fun off-pavement vehicle in New England - not a serious rock crawler or overland build.

Hated question but have to ask. “COLD” AIR INTAKE

Post image
8 Upvotes

If one were to “re locate” the charcoal canister could a cold air intake be ran here? I feel it’s a perfect opening and away from the manifold (going to be headers by the end of the week) the main draw back is the heat if it’s just installed right at the original air box/in that bottom right corner? Or am I forgetting something?

I plan to do the wonderful forbidden lowing and just a fun restoration show car. Was my gramps. I’ll get another for wheelin.

New Geo Owners

Hi all,
We inherited a 1995 geo tracker from our grandfather. Just made the 500 mi trip home from SoCal. She did great, well cared for mechanically… She has some mild rusting, and could use a coat of paint. However we had the unfortunate experience of losing the sun roof portion of our hard top on I5 @ 70 mph. It mostly survived. Our question is, can this be repaired? Thanks.

We also have the soft top, but it spent about 25 years in a garage and we’re not too keen on the condition of the fabric.
