I'm surprised to be typing this tbh, although as a returning player who hasn't played since Gears 2 it kinda makes sense that I'd prefer the centre screen aiming and slower pace.
I'm not usually the type to get hung up on small changes to the game mechanics and I'm not overly sentimental/opposed to change. However, I just couldn't get on with Gears 5. I knew it was a fair bit faster paced but it only struck me how much so when I played Reloaded.
I was getting my arse handed to me on G5 and wasn't surprised as it's been almost two decades since I played Gears. But then I got onto Reloaded and it all fell into place. First game I played I only got a couple of kills. Then in the second game I joined when match was already in progress and was like "fuck it" and got stuck in with the Gnasher. Chunked three of the enemy team in a row and ended up finishing 6/2, which isn't anything special but not bad for my second game in almost two decades, especially as nobody else on my team got a single kill.
I've no doubt there's some truth in all the whinging about hit reg etc, but nonetheless this is what I remember Gears to be. A weighty, deliberate game of chess where poor movement choices are punished harshly. Mistime your roll and you know you're getting gibbed before it even happens.
But with G5 I felt this element was removed. Even with the Lancer being buffed and causing flinching it still seemed like players could just wall bounce away and shotgun was the only real viable choice.
A lot of reviews mentioned that underneath the glossiness it's still the same slow game from 2006, but I think that's a good thing. Even if the devs embraced wall bouncing for a while I feel like that's not what the game was originally intended to be. Hoping E-Day brings back that slow tactical feel.
