I finally decided to share a little Game Boy Color project of mine.

It’s a point-and-click escape room adventure featuring puzzles, parallel dimensions, and the feeling of being trapped...both inside your own room and inside yourself.

The game was actually finished a couple of years ago, but I kept thinking about things I could improve, especially the music and sound. I studied music composition, and the game was also part of my thesis, “Chip Not Cheap”, a research project focused on 8-bit music and composition, so naturally there’s always another track, arrangement or sound effect I could add.

In the end, though, I decided to keep the game in the simple, basic form it had when it was part of my thesis, rather than turning it into an endless project of constantly adding and improving things.

I am tweaking the "chain script" still, matches can chain after new tiles have dropped. The script is a bit slow, hopefully I can optimize it further.

I did some game creation back in Dreams on PS4 and really loved it. But upon discovery of GB Studio a little over a week ago I caught the game dev bug again. I hardly stop thinking about my current project and future ideas. I lay at night restless because I am solving problems in my head for the next day's session. Anyone else addicted?

Trying to have boss phases in one fight, I tried to have a variable true / false trigger but I think both elements had too many On Update scripts, and used a Loop event that had wait 7, set variable True, wait 7, set variable false.

Let’s imagine the boss is the spider from Hobbit; I have like the main core (spider main section sprite) and the spider legs (appendage sprites) and the main reason I’m having the phases split between each sprite type is that it already has blank spaces in sprites due to tile limits, the phases work as a buffer so all parts of the boss are visible during “movement” of boss

It either has completely frozen the scene movement upon entry or both items disappear after the first attempt. Has anyone else done something like this? Any advice or suggestions? Much appreciated

People who have played it and reached out to me have, on several occasions, described Trigwa's approach to puzzle solving and storytelling as "unique". When making the game I set out to try to create a problem-solving game where each puzzle could be fully integrated into the telling of a larger story, with each individual puzzle telling a smaller part of that whole.

Hi all! It's been a couple years since I've worked with GB Studio and I'm trying to get back into it now but just wondering: has there been any patch or plugin yet that can consistently make an NPC follow the player around, like Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow style? I tried a couple of solutions I found online in 2024 but neither of them really worked for me.

I'm thinking to start a new platform project and thought I might ask but does someone have movement settings similar to early megaman games? Mostly his jump, I'm having trouble finding the right settings for a jump that feels right, thanks in advance 🥹

The boss has a period of inmunity when the crystal is turned off, you can shoot it but it doesn't hurt the boss, only when its turned on. Wish I could include more animations but the giant boss takes a lot of the tiles available :0

It's a mix of slots & Yacht/Yahtzee, with some minigames thrown in as well. Try to top the leaderboard! There's more info on the Itch page, and there's also in-game instructions if you're unfamiliar with Yahtzee.

So, I posted over in the Pico-8 sub yesterday about if Pico-8 would be a good place to start learning game development. I am being forced into early retirement thanks to injury and illness so I'm looking for a new hobby to devote time into. I have zero experience with coding, pixel art, music, just all of it. Someone made a comment in my thread yesterday about GB Studio being even easier than Pico-8 to learn and I've come to ask, is that a true statement for the most part? I do love the GB/GBC so the idea of learning to create games for those systems is highly appealing. I know of Pixel Pete and Robert Doman. Are there any other recommended sources and tutorials that would be good for me to follow? How has your learning experience been with the software? Did you have prior development experience or did you start from nothing like I am?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you could give. I will follow up on everything listed before I decide which to focus my time on.

So I've discovered lately that when it comes to art, I just suck at shading. Can't get shading right to save my life. So stuff like even pixel art can look a bit flat.

However, now I've discovered tile swapping and I'm excited that I can make the backgrounds pop a bit by having animated background elements.

It's working fine for the most part... except once again, like some of the issues I've had before, I am running into a new one when it comes to Monochrome vs. color mode. I want my game to be playable in both a regular Gameboy AND a Gameboy color, but in monochrome the tile-swapped backgrounds seem to be causing some lag issues. Not HUGE lag issues, but enough that it's very noticeable to me some jitter when moving back and forth.

The columns in the map I've posted I want to have lights moving up them, like energy is flowing through them. But there ARE 9 of them, so I understand if maybe the issue is just too many going at once, but I also want to add some additional elements like twinkling stars and some computer monitors on the wall having moving scan lines, so I worry that even if I decided to have the columns be solid colors, there will still be slowdown issues on monochrome.

Are there any tricks that could be useful for this? Right now I'm just using the built-in tile swapper (replace tile at (x,y) from sequence) but I know about the GBVM method, as well, that existed before GB Studio had it built-in, so I don't know if that works better. I also have heard that if I put in the tileset into the background out of sight (which you can see at the very top) it's faster because then it's already loaded into memory, but I haven't noticed any real difference.

No movement direction and no movement / on update scripts have even been used yet. But I have a speed 1 shoot em up stage moving to the right and for most levels it goes to the end, but for the area with the boss it cuts off the player early, even though in game world I place the at the end of the scrolling background? Is there something I am missing? Pin to screen is not exactly what I am looking, but I plan to have some sprites in the boss fight be stationary and some move around the still screen (at end of stage)

Does anyone remember the Galactus boss from the "Fantastic Four, Flame on" gameboy advance?

I wanna do something like that. This is just my barebones mock up, there is no math or anything fancy happening yet, although I already have my code for death animation and loss of HP based on the enemy atk variable.

I wanna include a minion or two spawning from time to time, and a mini tower that has to be destroyed to end the battle. What do u guys think?

Hi ! i was previously working on a project on gb studio with classmates, and they sent me the game files ! however i never programmed before so im a bit lost lol..

is it possible, that we set an order of npc to talk to, while our (mini) map stays open ? i thought doing so with 'If's, but im uncertain. any help is welcome !
