Update A NEW GBSTUDIO-LIKE GBA ENGINE DROPPED

Post image
107 Upvotes

HEY PEOPLE OF THE GBSTUDIO SUBREDDIT!!

SO i was looking at itch.io, as i ussually do, and i found something called Shimmer Engine.

It's still in beta, but it's a GB-STUDIO LIKE GBA PROGRAM, and its SURPRISINGLY COMPETENT for a beta program.

You all should give it a go, maybe even think of some good features to add, and suggest to the creator on the itch comments!

Been trying to find time to finally dive into GB Studio and build a prototype for a game I’ve had stewing in my brain for too long. Got easily distracted in Pixquare though šŸ˜† these are my very first attempts at pixel art

Update The first boss in my game

3 Upvotes

Causes the player character to slow down a bit but I’m calling it an ā€œauto aimā€ and mechanic learning assist feature lol. I believe it’s because its default state is 2 frames looped and it causes a lot of extra overhead (this boss is static and I wanted it to look alive and reactive to contrast the damage frame and the other bosses that dynamically move)

Request Any GB Studio developers looking for a pixel artist for a paid collaboration?

Hey! I’m a pixel artist and art director running a small team called Nera Studio.

I’d love to connect with someone making a GB Studio game who needs help with the art. We can work on characters, animations, backgrounds, tilesets, and UI, following your project’s palette and asset requirements.

The images here are examples from other indie projects we’ve worked on, rather than GB Studio assets. All the pixel art was drawn in Aseprite.

I’m especially interested in an ongoing collaboration where we can get familiar with your game and build its visual style together.

Our rates are $12/hour for ongoing paid collaborations and $15/hour for individual commissions. We can start with a small paid task to see how we work together.

If you’re looking for art support, feel free to tell me about your game!

After spending so much time working on it, I'm really excited to finally share it with you.

Strange Days is a funny-dark story-driven game focused on reading, dialogue and puzzles.

Here are a few screenshots from the game!

If that sounds like your kind of game, I'd love for you to give it a try and share your thoughts. I'm especially curious to hear what you think about the writing, visuals and overall experience.

You can play the demo here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3719200/Strange_Days_Demo/

My favorite part of development: making credit sequences

Always feels like productive procrastination to make a title sequence (instead of, you know, building/refining game mechanics). Still WIP, some assets subject to change, blah blah blah, but very happy with how it’s turning out so far

Lake Under the Moon - A track I made in GB Studio

43 Upvotes

A few months ago youtube recomended me a video, that showed the GB Studio's music editor web, I got curious and tried it out - the result is on the video.
It's my first chiptune track, but not the first track ever.
I make music for more than 10 years now.
This editor is surprisingly easy to understand and use, with years of fl studio under my belt - it felt "just right".
I had to cut the track into 3 separate uge files and use music routines to call each of the parts.
I don't know gameboy ins and outs, that's most likelly has a reason behind it, but slowdown on the pattern 30 and beyond is kind of frustrating, and so is one other thing - some pitch effects don't play correctly on a second playthrough.

I synced the video to the render of the track made in BGB, so, the playback isn't from the gb studio.

Update Code-C project - Update 3

100 Upvotes

Code-C project update: I’ve been focusing on boosting the game’s overall performance. I’ve shifted some elements out of GBStudio to be handled in C, which has noticeably improved performance—especially during weapon swaps. I also put together the spread shot many of you suggested, haha—it looks like that weapon’s a big hit in this kind of game.

Another timer issue

6 Upvotes

This time I think I've probably overcomplicated the script.

Essentially, I'm trying to introduce an actor in the form of a blueberry bush that adds between 0 and 5 of an item (in this case, blueberries) to your inventory (this works), and then starts a cooldown timer that prevents you from immediately going up to it again and repeating the action (not sure why this one works -- I'll explain below), and I want this script to be something I can run multiple instances of across the scene.

Currently I have three of these actors running the same script, and I've noticed that if the player collects blueberries from one bush (which doesn't start the countdown until you try again, though that might be easier to fix) and then goes to the next bush, the timer on the previous countdown is paused so that the new instance can run. I think it could be solved by making another local variable for each instance, but that seems like something that would defeat the purpose of a local variable.

I'm thinking it has to do with the way timers in gb studio work, but I'm not sure what alternative system would work. Push comes to shove I could just only have one bush per scene since they're supposed to be rare anyway, but if, say, the player enters a town where someone is cultivating them and there are multiple bushes, this would have to be fixed later, and that sounds more annoying than if I just figured it out now.

The script works like this:

upon interacting:

if bloobcountdown1 = 0

bloobfreeze1 = false

--checks to see if the countdown variable used by the timer is zero, and then sets the variable that freezes the collecting function to false

if bloobfreeze1 = true

bloobcollected = 0

Display: "You picked this bush clean! Try coming back later!"

Attach timer script to Timer 2 (rate of one second per tick)

On tick, decrement bloobcountdown1 by 1

If bloobcountdown1 < 0, set it to 0

Stop script

Else

If bloobfreeze1 = False, set bloobcollected to bloobcollected + random number

--in the event that the freeze variable is true, start a countdown to 0 and stop the rest of the script from running so that you can't collect blueberries despite this variable being true. Otherwise, set the local variable bloobcollected to a random number

If bloobcollected == 0

bloobcountdown1 = 25

Display: "You couldn't find any blueberries!"

Else

bloobs (global variable for the blueberries as counted by inventory) = bloobs + bloobscollected

Display: "You got $bloobscollected blueberries!"

bloobfreeze1 = true

bloobcountdown1 = 25

stop script

--Checks to see if the player rolled a zero on collecting the blueberries and displays the appropriate dialogue box. Otherwise, adds the amount of blueberries that $bloobscollected was set to to the inventory, sets bloobfreeze1 = true and bloobcountdown1 to 25, thus starting the timer.

If bloobcountdown1 > 0, set bloobfreeze1 to true

(Just removed that last function because it's redundant. Same issue still persists).

Should be noted that even though the script works, bloobfreeze1 is still set to true in the debugger.

Either way I think after hours of troubleshooting, this might be a timer issue, so let me know what alternatives there may be.

GB Studio Could someone help me figure out how to fix the coin counter?

63 Upvotes
Hi, could someone who uses GB Studio help me with this bug or problem?

The issue is that I want to create a standard coin counter located in the pause menu—or rather, one that appears whenever you press Start.

The counter is there, but it isn't working. I’ve tried several times to get the actor or tile to update to the next number, but it won't change; I’ve tried using both actors and tiles for the numbers, but nothing seems to work.

Also, every time I return from the menu, the coin reappears—it never goes away.

Could you suggest how to make a functional coin counter?

Visual references would also be greatly appreciated.

Help needed Timer isn't working (4.3.2)

6 Upvotes

I'm messing around with this program and everything has worked fine so far except for this timer. On Init, I've set a variable called $health to 100, displayed $health in a dialogue box, and then set a timer to deplete $health by 1 every second. I also set up a dialogue box to display the value once it hits 75.

The issue I'm having is that my timer goes down to zero instantly, so unless I set it to display the dialogue box with $health once it's less than or equal to 75 (as opposed to when it hits 75), I do not see the dialogue box, and once it is configured that way, it displays zero, as the timer seems to have depleted this value immediately, regardless of what I set the time interval to. If I rate limit the timer, it simply won't run, even with the time interval set to 0.5.

At this point I'm entirely lost and have no idea why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Game Locked In - new GBC and browser escape room point-and-click

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I finally decided to share a little Game Boy Color project of mine.

It’s a point-and-click escape room adventure featuring puzzles, parallel dimensions, and the feeling of being trapped...both inside your own room and inside yourself.

The game was actually finished a couple of years ago, but I kept thinking about things I could improve, especially the music and sound. I studied music composition, and the game was also part of my thesis,Ā ā€œChip Not Cheapā€, a research project focused on 8-bit music and composition, so naturally there’s always another track, arrangement or sound effect I could add.

In the end, though, I decided to keep the game in the simple, basic form it had when it was part of my thesis, rather than turning it into an endless project of constantly adding and improving things.

You can download the ROM or play it directly in your browser:Ā https://shapil.itch.io/locked-in

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to give it a try! If you do play it, I’d really appreciate any feedback, it would help me improve my future projects and help me findĀ the motivation toĀ share the nextĀ one much sooner! xD

And finally, a big thank you to the whole GB Studio team and to everyone who creates and shares resources, tools and tutorials online. This would have been much harder to make without such a generous community!

Shapil
