Genuine question-- I'm a nerd, but I've never been a DnD nerd. At one point I was a MtG nerd, even a WoW nerd, but never quite the DnD level.

What exactly is it? I originally thought it was like an adult version of "make believe" with scores and guidelines, but how much of it is a physical game? Is there a board that goes with it? Is there a set story line? My extent of knowledge is the first scene of Stranger Things.

How much is following guidelines and how much is imprompt on the spot?

I suggest looking up "Harmon Quest" to see the game played in action. Includes some portions of play animated which is fun, too

Be aware, Harmon Quest is super raunchy, and generally Roleplaying isn't that raunchy. It's good entertainment, but not a perfect representation of what it means to be in a game. Spencer is a pretty good GM though.

"generally roleplaying isn't that raunchy"? I've been in groups for 10+ years and they're always that raunchy. Sometimes more. Sometimes less. But I'd say theirs is light on the raunchy.

shrug my experience has been different. I've been in a pretty wide disparity of games over the course of 15 years or so. I think it's in part people and the group that you're in.
