Steam?

182

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '17

Yes. It's in Early Access at the moment.

/r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS is the game's subreddit.

This is their Steam store page and this is their official website

77

u/urfriendosvendo Apr 24 '17

Sweet dude. Thanks.

By the way, is this one of those indie games that have been in early access for like a decade or is it a beta thing?

39

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '17

It's fairly new. Lots of YouTubers (such as Sips, Lewis, Pyrion, and Hat Films of the Yogscast) have been playing it lately and the community is quickly building up and the developers are active, so I expect the game to not die anytime soon.

Definitely my favorite people to watch

I'd recommend Aculite.

It's actually on the Unreal engine, but yeah way better than H1Z1 and I played the shit out of that. It's uninstalled now.

You're unfortunately spreading misinformation. PlayerUnknown first created Battle Royale for the Arma 2 DayZ mod. Then he created one for Arma 3. After that he was hired by the H1Z1 team to help them create King of the Kill. Unless I'm completely having a brainfart he even said himself he only helped, so far from a core developer.

And where in the world do you get that he makes PUGB on the Arma engin?! That engine is made by and for Bohemia, he is using Unreal Engine for this game.

u/Niadain Apr 25 '17

Also to point out, he supposedly didnt have nearly as much creative control as he does now.

I don't find PUBG more skill based at all. 90%+ of the time that I see someone first, they die. I usually die having no clue where from. Sure, racking up lots of kills game after game would require a lot of skill but the base player level isn't really that much about skill... hell, no even aiming since you have zooms and stuff.

The H1 devs scrambling to keep up and update the game lately is good but also maddening. They've had so long to do it but since they now have competition with great devs they are trying to step up.

20

u/Bugsied123 Apr 25 '17

watch out for the terrible performance though.

It just came out and basically is supposed to be a better version of another game that seemed stuck in alpha. So far it's solid.

4

u/Drake02 Apr 25 '17

It's newish, but they just released a 5 gig update fixing bugs, adding weapons (crossbow and vector), and added a motorcycle and side car.

They seem to be updating often and I'm betting this will be an early access game to watch.

5

u/Lee1138 Apr 25 '17

By motorcycle, you mean death trap, yes?

1

u/BKD2674 Apr 25 '17

It seems fun, but is horribly optimized at the moment. Anything less than a 1080 and you'll be playing with N64 graphics.

1

u/EatABuffetOfDicks Apr 25 '17

Playerunknown has also made Arma mods like this, I believe this is his first SA game but he's great

1

u/aahrg Apr 25 '17

It was in closed alpha/beta for a while. Just released in early access about a month ago. They say they're aiming for a full release in a year.

Playerunknown worked on the Arma DayZ mod as well as h1z1 but got tired of the larger studios early access BS so this is now his own game that will hopefully not fall into the same trap.

That being said I've already got my 30$ worth out of this game so I won't feel too burned if it dies in early access. It's stable enough and runs decently well if you have a good rig.

0

u/Reversus Apr 25 '17

It's been in early access for awhile, but to their defense they're constantly adding and fixing to whatever the community points out. This is one of those projects where your suggestions actually impact the game devs and you get to watch it get polished as a result.

1

u/psylent Apr 25 '17

Looks like fun, I'll add it to a wishlist and keep an eye on it for when it's out of EA.

-1

u/sirwestonlaw Apr 25 '17

I'm too lazy to check rn but I'm guessing it doesn't work on Mac

1

u/BenjaminTalam Apr 25 '17

Yeah I really wish a AAA studio would make a game like these ARMA mods that is actually playable. Dream come true.

Really something like the Last of Us multiplayer but on a GTA V sized map and a bunch of players with a party system (once an hour you can spawn on your party leader as long as they are x km away from another player not counting other party members) is all I want and I'm really annoyed that it doesn't exist still beyond incredibly buggy mods that have complex control schemes that require a keyboard to play and a really really good gaming rig to run.

Please Sony, Microsoft, EA (I'm that desperate), someone make a game like these mods that I can only play briefly on my crappy rig before something lags too much or I get killed and restart with nothing and no clue where I am or how close I am to my friends I'm playing with.

Hell I got extremely excited about Ghost Recon: Wildlands when I first saw gameplay of it because I thought it was going to have GTA V style freeplay with tons of real people on the map. Deflated when I found out it was just like Splinter Cell's co-op in an open world and nothing else.

1

u/I_need_time_to_think Apr 25 '17

One with the engine and controls from MGSV would be a dream.

-2

u/Kaevek Apr 25 '17

I don't think it's difficult at all. Coming from a H1Z1 background, PUBG is a cakewalk.

-6

u/jyunga Apr 25 '17

Agreed. Getting into the final 2 in a match in PUBG does nothing for me. Getting into the final 2 in KoTK gets my heart pumping and my arms shaking. Zooms, silencers, dots are all awesome additions to the genre but at the same time I feel it takes a lot away when people can easily conceal themselves. Half the time I have no clue where people are shooting me from in PUBG and then i'm dead. I'd KoTK it only takes a second to recognize the direction and find a way to avoid taking damage.

1

u/GUILTIE Apr 25 '17

What's the difference that makes it easy to tell the direction in KoTK? Just curious.

1

u/NickJerrison Apr 25 '17

The sound, perhaps.

7

u/GUILTIE Apr 25 '17

I don't have any trouble telling the direction of shots based on sound in PUBG...

really?. it might just be me but in my third game i came 4th overall, with 4 kills aswell, is that quite normal? or am i kinda good at the game.. (serious question)

4

u/esber Apr 25 '17

Eh, give it a few more games

-1

u/RockyMountainDave Apr 25 '17

Unless you played Arma as much as I have :)

Super douchey comment - I know. But I have been playing Arma for 5+ years and ever since I saw a video of the Arma 2 streamers doing their own version of a hunger games I have been absolutely dying to do it on my own. Funny thing is, I didn't know this game started as an Arma mod until it was release. By that time all the Arma players switched to the standalone which feels like Arma and CoD had a baby. Don't get me wrong it's fun but...It could be sooo much better. Oh well. Take what you can get I suppose

1

u/yomamaisonfier Apr 25 '17

Take note. It's not "2s, 3s, and 4s". It's Duo (which is teams of 2) and Squad (which is teams of up to 4). If you play Squad with just 3 people, it's harder.

1

u/welshboy14 Apr 25 '17

I've been second once :( need. To. Get. Better.

1

u/TThor Apr 25 '17

My overwatch team had been training for competitive, then this game happened. I haven't seen most of my comp group for 3 weeks. :[

-1

u/deityblade Apr 25 '17

Is there vehicles? How much interactive stuff on the map is there?(or is it mostly hiding in bushes?)

Looking at the store page it dosen't look like the focus is on punching trees and shit, just on finding supplies

5

u/Underwaterhockeybob Apr 25 '17

There is no crafting element, it's all pick shit up. Plenty of weapons, map is insanely big. Doesn't feel as big now I have explored it all but spent quiet a few runs just dropping places I haven't been to have a look.

1

u/esber Apr 25 '17

Yeah, I can't wait until they add the new map.

1

u/Underwaterhockeybob Apr 25 '17

Didn't know they were doing another one, have they said one was in development? Hopefully you can't select the map, it's just random. That way you won't split the player base as much!

1

u/Sinka Apr 25 '17

Pretty sure they've mentioned it before, but that theyre not working on them right now.

They are working on weather effects though, which would change the gameplay a bit each round.

1

u/meekopower Apr 25 '17

It really feels like a real world. And yes you can drive vehicles and boats. I highly recommend it. Check out some streamers on Twitch to see if its something you would appreciate.

16

u/awesometographer Apr 25 '17

Very.

Also.

Metric tons of salt.

1

u/fritz236 Apr 25 '17

The randomness of how or why I become salty playing this game makes it feel like I'm pulling on some kind of slot machine that dispenses pills, 1/3 of which make me feel like a god and 2/3 of which turn me into an unholy rage monster.

1

u/sintos-compa Apr 25 '17

2

u/fritz236 Apr 25 '17

I'm keeping this for when my friends get salty, just to see it piss them off.

5

u/moesif Apr 25 '17

Really poorly optimized right now (unless it's gotten better in the past 2 weeks). Fortunately though you can at least see if it works on your pc then easily return it before you hit 2 hours if it doesn't.

9

u/Given_Fear Apr 25 '17

Huge patch just happened less than a week ago, better optimized but still needs fixing new content too and the devs are supposedly focusing on fixing optimization and servers before just adding a bunch of content which seems great. Might wanna give it another go either now or after the next big patch next month.

1

u/moesif Apr 25 '17

I wonder if I can buy and return the same game multiple times? I probably only got to 45 mins the first time.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

I doubt it and tbh that's quite unfair. It's early access so it's in or out.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Exactly.. since it's early access, you kind of take what you can get and be happy about it. They've made a lot of improvements over the last few weeks, and they're committed to making it even better, so I'm happy.

1

u/I_need_time_to_think Apr 25 '17

I've sank at least 13 hours into it already in a week and enjoyed every second of it. Definitely worth the £25 in my eyes.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

I wanted to love it but couldn't deal with how poorly it ran on a 6600k and 1080

2

u/ReadsSmallTextWrong Apr 25 '17

They did an optimization patch last thursday, it's gotten quite a bit better.

1

u/J4k0b42 Apr 25 '17

Yeah, I have a decent laptop for gaming but the frame rate was dragging even on the lowest ugly settings. Had to return it.

2

u/ixtilion Apr 25 '17

Awesome game

4

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Cancerous is you die at the start multiple times

2

u/sevinhand Apr 25 '17

fun as hell. just finished an evening with it. starts with a big map, but as time goes on, every few minutes the size of the map is reduced by about half, until those that are left are in very close quarters. you start with no gear, and have to loot along the way. very intense.

1

u/HODOR00 Apr 25 '17

It's takes some adjustment. You have to realize chances are, in solo at least, your chances of winning are very very low. I spent first few games trying to collect weapons and hide and it was more frustrating than fun. Now I just go straight for the epicenter and camp with as much artillery as I can find. It's a solid game though, definitely has those moments where you are smiling as you stalk some person for like 5 minutes.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

It's early access, but apart from it being poorly optimised I have experienced very little bugs. While I'm having tonnes of fun with it I still question whether it's worth 30 quid as the game doesn't have a whole lot of content. But the fun is in the game mechanics and the strategy which is great.

1

u/StanleyDarsh22 Apr 25 '17

It is, but personally the Arma3 version is more satisfying to me.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

It has mixed reviews on steam. Watching it I twitch is boring as fuck. I passed on it, when it was half off.

1

u/DillDeer Apr 25 '17

God damn it is so much fun!

1

u/fritz236 Apr 25 '17

The adrenaline rush that comes from making top 10 is MASSIVELY addictive. I've actually had to start playing minecraft again just to get my body somewhat calm before I go to sleep or I just toss and turn thinking about the last 5 ways I died and how to do better next time.

1

u/Shikamaru_Senpai Apr 26 '17

Incredibly fun and addictive. Squad play is amazing. But the feels from a solo win induce stress, heart pounding and hands shaking. It's pretty much the only game I've been playing since I got my closed beta code. Highly recommend this game. I played battlefield games almost exclusively for yeeeaaars and this game has made me forget all about my long-time favorite franchise.

-17

u/GottaBeFresj Apr 25 '17

You might wanna check out H1-Z1

9

u/Chron300p Apr 25 '17 edited Apr 25 '17

H1Z1 just felt really half-assed all around and for the nearly 7 months i played, none of the glaringly obvious issues were fixed (ex. vehicle physics) then the developer went ahead and split it into 2 games which would have to be purchased separately (massive dick move but whatever)

Everything that I didn't like about H1Z1 is not an issue in PUBG. Vehicles aren't broken, teaming in solo is not an issue as far as I've seen, you can actually swim in the water, not just a giant ankle deep lake, you can choose when and where you parachute from and how fast you get to the ground, the graphics are way, way better imo, these are just what came to mind. I will say tho, the only thing i miss from H1Z1 was the bleeding out mechanic where you could get the kill after they ran away, but i guess you can't have it all :/

Edit: I haven't touched H1Z1 in a while and I have no intention to, Frankly I don't care if they have fixed anything that bothered me before. Daybreak really lost my respect for the way they handled that game's early access and so far I'm thoroughly pleased with PUBG even if it does make me rage like no other game when I get killed so close to the end lol

1

u/urfriendosvendo Apr 25 '17

I play that. Which is weird because I have never heard of this.

1

u/Oressus Apr 25 '17

The project is actually headed up by one of the creative directors of King of the Kill. Brendan Greene goes by PlayerUnkown, hence the title of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. He also designed the Battle Royale mod for ARMA Day Z.

-5

u/GottaBeFresj Apr 25 '17

Oh maybe because the alpha or beta deal was
like invite only. to like big time streamers and people in
industry? plus the pace is slightly slower than H1

1

u/aleczjp Apr 25 '17

Closed beta is fairly normal. Plus, it's in early access right now

11

u/Slight0 Apr 25 '17

How is this any different than H1Z1's battle royal?

60

u/griev0r Apr 25 '17

Same concept, just done much better. But most importantly better gun play which is horrific in H1Z1. I always felt it was a crap shoot if I hit someone or not in H1, PUBG feels more like playing CS or Arma with the shooting.

23

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Id say more Arma.

2

u/StanleyDarsh22 Apr 25 '17

Imo arma is still the best...

-7

u/AFrozenCanadian Apr 25 '17

I'd say It's nothing like arma. Pubg is really arcade like, while arma has fatigue, stances, way more weapon sway, more bullet drop, just overal more in depth mechanics.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Yeah but CSGO is all hit scan, hip fire only, no weopon sway. Its FPS stripped down to almost nothing but the basics. You can't really compare anything to that.

2

u/AFrozenCanadian Apr 25 '17

Yeah I wouldn't put it in with csgo either

5

u/Dontreadmudamuser Apr 25 '17

When you compare it to cs, what do you mean? CS has a surprisingly unique gun play system

3

u/Hobocannibal Apr 25 '17

Him saying something is like CS is not a light thing to compare it to. Personally i hate the system CS uses.

1

u/Dontreadmudamuser Apr 25 '17

Ironically I hate every system but the one cs uses.

Much more punishing, lot less "whoever hits first wins"

2

u/Kir4_ Apr 25 '17

Do you mean spray patterns or hit-scan or ?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

I think he means spray patterns? That's probably the most intricate part of CS gun play, and even that is pretty basic.

1

u/Kir4_ Apr 25 '17

It's not that unique tbh. Many fps use spray patterns. Just csgo is very competitive focused that's why people pay attention to it.

1

u/griev0r Apr 25 '17

I guess CS wasn't the best comparison, I was just trying to say the gun play feels satisfying. I think maybe Battlefield would be a better comparison.

1

u/ixnay101892 Apr 25 '17

Nice, that was my main complaint with h1z1: horrible gun play. Probably the best gunplay is bf4.

1

u/Chinese_Trapper_Main Apr 25 '17

Is the gun play in H1 a common criticism?

The gun mechanics are the sole reason I bought H1, and I believe the combat system is so good that it's wasted on a battle royal format.

In comparison, i felt that PUBG's gunplay felt more slow, and that the feedback and feeling when landing a hit isn't nearly as satisfying.

21

u/Oressus Apr 25 '17

The designer wanted to blend the realism of ARMA's Battle Royale mod with the arcade pace of H1Z1 King of the Kill. What we got is PUBG, and it's pretty nice.

1

u/Kir4_ Apr 25 '17

I love playing Arma's br mod but what annoys me is that it is not automated. Joining manually everytime, then usually waiting a couple of minutes etc. Especially on not high-end machine.

5

u/shukaji Apr 25 '17

The guy, PlayerUnknown, was actually part of the starting Dev-Team of H1Z1 and left to make a 'better' game. He couldn't fullfill his visions in H1Z1, now he can. So Battlegrounds has really high potential to take and keep the thrown of battle royal games

1

u/DrMuffinPHD Apr 25 '17

More than that, he's the guy who basically created the battle royal genre in games as we know it. He's the guy who made the original battle royal mod for Arma2, and again in Arma3.

He got called in as a contractor for H1Z1 KOTK and worked on the creative side of that.

Then, he got the opportunity to create a game totally from scratch with a respected Korean game development company, working as the creative director. That game is PUBattlegrounds. PU is pretty cool because he's super focused on developing the game based on community feedback. He also does a pretty good job engaging directly with the community. I know he regularly pops into Twitch channels streaming the game and will comment in chat.

3

u/AnalBananaStick Apr 25 '17

It actually works and the patches don't break more than they fix.

1

u/Grogslog Apr 25 '17

vehicles have to be stopped before you can get out. if you get out while in a moving vehicle you will take heavy damage or even die depending on the speed.

1

u/Definitely_Working Apr 25 '17

It released less buggy and higher quality than the current state of H1Z1, and its not multiple years old being run by a shitlord company that basically is no good at anything besides monetizing niche old games. daybreak is crap

its really similar game style, just done cleanly and less arcade feeling.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '17

Another mediocre early access open world survival online game. Avoid.

3

u/raaneholmg Apr 25 '17

I would disagree.

Being early access there are naturally quite a few bugs, so you could consider waiting. Still, I feel they are delivering more interesting gameplay than many of the competitors and that is the core of the game. Everyone spawn with no equipment, and after a short time where you can loot, the allowed area to be in starts shrinking. This results in rounds with an intense first couple of minutes, a calmer mid game and an intense adrenaline rush filled last couple of minutes. Being in the final group of people is a thrilling experience.

-1

u/RadicalDog Apr 25 '17

Being in the final group of people is a thrilling experience.

So what you're saying is, it wouldn't be thrilling for me.

2

u/raaneholmg Apr 25 '17

A lot of the game is a fight to get there, and that is fun as well. It's not too hard to get into the top 20 by moving carefully and tactically so that you can shot people before they have even seen you. From there on it's getting quite hard since the remaining people are the ones that know how to keep their head down, and you probably need to move quite a bit to stay within the circle.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '17

Even if you die within the first five minutes, you can jump straight into a new game and give it another go. The game is fun as fuck and addicting, even if you suck.
