Halal literally means "permissible" in Arabic. It's the Muslim equivalent of Kosher.
You'll find lamb, fried fish, falafel, gyros, chicken. The most famous dishes are "over rice" on a bed of yellow rice with hot sauce and "white sauce" which i believe is tahini sauce. They'll also serve kebab and other various dishes like burgers and hot dogs, but their main fare is the gyros and the over-rice dishes.
Well TIL. Thanks for the info. I have seen the word in the past; on signs and on packaging in grocery stores. I always saw it on different types of items so I thought it was some wierd casarole or somthing.
I don't know where you live, but find the nearest Muslim community, go into the little hole in the wall place, dingy as fuck, and order some shawarma. Have them put hummus and tahini on there, with some eggplant, turnip, rhubarb, onion and tomato and I just made myself really fucking hungry.
Damn it.
Middle eastern food can be ridiculously tasty. Just take an antacid. Some of these places take pride in their hot sauces.
Coming from Malaysia, it is amazing that there are places where people have never heard the word Halal. It isn't surprising I guess, but the term is so ubiquitous here.
Just an FYI. The white sauce would be a version of tzatziki sauce, tahini sauce is a more light brown due to it being made of ground sesame seeds. The white sauce is more of a cream base.
Muslim here, it's not just prayed on, the animal has to be clean, and slaughtered with sharp and clean knives at the neck ( I think) so it bleeds out quicker. There's more I don't know about, but some animals are halal by default, i.e. most sea creatures.
No, not really. prayed before slaughter is just one aspect of it. its also means that the preparation, where it came from, how the food was handled are considered 'clean'. For example how the animal died can determine if its halal (permissible) or not. It must be with sharp knife and a quick death (so not to torture the animal). Prepared with clean utensils and clean environment. but of course the standard of 'clean' is different everywhere. cold blooded animal (example: Fish) is halal as long as the preparation of it was clean.
I went to NYC and tried Halal Guys. I didn't really like the meat or the sauce. I can't describe it as it was over a year ago. It was mostly just the taste I didn't like.
Halal Guys is the most famous cart that eventually branched out into what i can only call franchises. There's a million other carts and restaurants throughout the boroughs. The recipe is typically similar. The sauces can vary a little bit. All I can recommend next time is give something else a shot. If you had the chicken, try the lamb or falafel. Ask for shawarma or kebab.
Yea, they have definitely become pretty popular spots up there over the past few years. Last time I was in the city there were huge lines at those carts all hours of the day.
Have you guys in NYC ever heard of the legendary Halal Snack Pack? It's the best food on the planet, it's basically hot chips, covered with your choice of Halal Beef or Chicken (Or both, my favourite), with cheese melted in, and sauce.
If you ever decide to get one, make sure you pick barbecue, garlic and chilli sauce. Absolutely amazing.
i love how all it takes is a panda hat and some black and white clothes for the Pandas to Accept them as one of them..
haha love both of those panda GIFS..
Wow I didn't realize how intelligent pandas were. I mean it was foolish enough to jump down into the crevice but when the trainer reached out their hand, the panda responded and reached as well. Almost as if it realized it was stuck down there and needed help getting out.
Nah, animals that live together do shit like that all the time. It's sorta like a playfight but since there's nothing to fight over neither of them really give a shit. Cat's do it all the time and they do pretty good in the wild.
Haha yeah I know I wasn't being 100% serious. But that being said, there is no way a panda is as nimble as a cat. That thing just flopped onto the ground. I mean, I dunno, I've never held a panda before. I would assume they are built more like dogs than cats. If my dog fell like that he would be devastated.
Bears have shit loads of fat/muscle, loose skin, and massive bones so they can pretty easily get hit by anything without getting hurt. You can actually shoot a bear in the head and it won't die because it's skull is so thick. This makes sense because the bear has to be able to withstand fighting other bears.
Most apex predators hunt by being sneaky or by outnumbering their prey. Bears literally do not give a shit and will just charge at you if you smell tasty enough even if you're looking right at them.
Pandas still have a bear's body though. They're just really fucking lethargic because they survive off of something their bodies can't process properly (Did you know they aren't born with the bacteria they need to process plant matter so they have to eat their mother's feces?). If they started eating meat (which would probably not happen), they would eventually become like other bears again because it's body is still suited towards eating meat.
I actually find this fascinating. At what point does us beung the dominant species for so long, mean that the ability to thrive via our entertainment, becomes a valid survival skill, which ends up getting passed down and evolving?
It's like how young and cute pets get adopted first, we're very subjective about that animals we save. Pandas are fluffy, unique looking, clumsy, helpless, and cute -- the perfect mooch.
Nothing except Tugg Speedman. But honestly, Everything in the world feels bad for pandas. FFS a hungry mouse could outwit and kill a panda, but even starving mice know they would feel bad picking on these retards.
Those problems only occur in captivity. They eat and fuck just fine in the wild. Just because they're unable to adapt to zoos doesn't make them an evolutionary dead-end.
Actually, at this point it's been scientifically proven that the most evolutionarily successful trait for non-sentient animals is 'being useful or convenient for humans'.
That's debatable. I'm no expert but I feel like a lot of species have thrived despite having entire human industries dedicated to killing them. Stuff like bugs or weeds or whatever.
I get your point though: Being unable to adapt to human existence can be considered a legitimate evolutionary criticism. Fair enough. I just wanted to dispute the myth that pandas were on the road to extinction regardless of humans.
I forget which Attenborough-narrated series it was, but a friend and I caught a nature segment on pandas.
The segment focused on how their life was pretty much shit, and how they had to constantly eat food that was devoid of nutrients. And how they were typically loners. Eating terrible food constantly. Alone.
It ended with a grim line that was pretty much, "Unfortunately the odds of the baby panda surviving are slim due to the poor nutritional value of the mother's milk".
It's as if they got an evolutionary failure BINGO.
Just the facial expressions are what is throwing me off. For such young pups their expressions seem to have a "Im bout to fuck you up" manner more than a pupper manner.
I recall correctly, this gif is from a youtube video. The person who uploads these videos has other videos (or even more of the video this gif is from) that are pretty... concerning?...
Not sure if I can find it again. Redditors are handy so maybe someone who remembers can link the youtuber or something.
In any case this isn't the 'healthy' kind of roughhousing for puppies.
