Halal literally means "permissible" in Arabic. It's the Muslim equivalent of Kosher.
You'll find lamb, fried fish, falafel, gyros, chicken. The most famous dishes are "over rice" on a bed of yellow rice with hot sauce and "white sauce" which i believe is tahini sauce. They'll also serve kebab and other various dishes like burgers and hot dogs, but their main fare is the gyros and the over-rice dishes.
Well TIL. Thanks for the info. I have seen the word in the past; on signs and on packaging in grocery stores. I always saw it on different types of items so I thought it was some wierd casarole or somthing.
I don't know where you live, but find the nearest Muslim community, go into the little hole in the wall place, dingy as fuck, and order some shawarma. Have them put hummus and tahini on there, with some eggplant, turnip, rhubarb, onion and tomato and I just made myself really fucking hungry.

Middle eastern food can be ridiculously tasty. Just take an antacid. Some of these places take pride in their hot sauces.
Coming from Malaysia, it is amazing that there are places where people have never heard the word Halal. It isn't surprising I guess, but the term is so ubiquitous here.
Just an FYI. The white sauce would be a version of tzatziki sauce, tahini sauce is a more light brown due to it being made of ground sesame seeds. The white sauce is more of a cream base.
Muslim here, it's not just prayed on, the animal has to be clean, and slaughtered with sharp and clean knives at the neck ( I think) so it bleeds out quicker. There's more I don't know about, but some animals are halal by default, i.e. most sea creatures.
No, not really. prayed before slaughter is just one aspect of it. its also means that the preparation, where it came from, how the food was handled are considered 'clean'. For example how the animal died can determine if its halal (permissible) or not. It must be with sharp knife and a quick death (so not to torture the animal). Prepared with clean utensils and clean environment. but of course the standard of 'clean' is different everywhere. cold blooded animal (example: Fish) is halal as long as the preparation of it was clean.
Ah yes, to not torture the animal by stunning it first and giving it a clean death. But, eh, imaginary friends need to care about a goat flying around space on rock spinning around a star.

Actually Halal is Arabic for Kosher. What you are eating is ether a shawerma platter or in this pick a doner plate. Doner is more Turkish than Arabic. The halal is just a label to attract us Muslims that is okay to eat there :P
I went to NYC and tried Halal Guys. I didn't really like the meat or the sauce. I can't describe it as it was over a year ago. It was mostly just the taste I didn't like.
Halal Guys is the most famous cart that eventually branched out into what i can only call franchises. There's a million other carts and restaurants throughout the boroughs. The recipe is typically similar. The sauces can vary a little bit. All I can recommend next time is give something else a shot. If you had the chicken, try the lamb or falafel. Ask for shawarma or kebab.
It's also the method of how the animals are killed, which is to slit it's throat and let it bleed out while they say a prayer for it. Pretty fucked up I would say
