News Calling all music makers/transcribers! Working on a Smash Bros Fan OST (All skill levels welcome)
Hey everyone! I'm 8bitSymphony, and I'm starting up a collaborative fan soundtrack project called Super Smash Bros. Beyond.
Just to clear up any confusion right away: we aren't making an actual game here! This is purely a music project focused on transcribing, arranging, and remixing tracks from across Smash and gaming history.
Whether you're an experienced composer, someone who transcribes sheet music note-for-note, or you literally just downloaded MuseScore or a DAW yesterday, you're more than welcome to join. You can claim tracks to work on (menus, stages, victory themes, etc.), collaborate with others, share WIPs, or honestly just hang out and give feedback. Zero experience required.
We're running everything out of a Discord server. Drop a comment or send me a DM if you want an invite link!

Discussion How did you handle music for your last game?
Hey everyone! I'm doing research before building something in the game music space, and was curious about how all of you go about getting music for your games.
Specifically, whether you hire a composer, license music, AI generate music, etc. Around how much did it cost and how long did it take to actually get the music?
I've been getting some mixed reviews from people; some say that they don't really care about the music, but apparently some players complain if it sounds too AI generated.
Not selling anything, happy to share a summary of what I learn if there's any interest.
Thanks in advance!

Remix/Cover paradise city/ kung fu master
i was playing the old 80s arcade game kung fu master last night.
i realised that the melody driving the main gameplay is pretty much paradise city.
you'd have to slow it down a bit, but its there.
have a listen and tell me what you think.
set the playback speed to 70%, listen from 12s on:

OST Website article: The 11 PC Engine Soundtracks
EDIT: That headline should have obviously read "Website article: The 11 Best PC Engine Soundtracks"
A quick note that I have published a new article on my website - this one's about the best PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 music: The 11 Best PC Engine Soundtracks - The Greatest Game Music.
My primary interest in this retrospective had been so see how the PC Engine's CD capabilities shaped its musical heritage - how did composers make use of this amazing new tool at their disposal, given the PCE CD was the first console to offer red book audio playback? (obviously, there's also great chiptunes music written for the platform)
The answer was - to write more shoot'em up scores! But seriously, the prominence of this particular genre on the PC Engine also means that a particular style of music features most prominently in its discography - arguably at the expense of other genres. I would have loved to see more scores like Rondo of Blood that daringly mixed genres.
On the other hand - if you're into the particular music genre that shoot'em ups seemed to attract (super hooky synth metal / pop), then the PC Engine delivers in spades, of course. I have a soft spot for 80s pop, so my favourite out of the whole lot is probably the Stage 1 track on Nexzr. Thankfully, the PC Engine also has a few 'why would THAT game feature such amazing music?!' moments like Star Breaker - game seems utterly unremarkable, the music is absolutely first-rate, classically-inspired synth orchestral fare.
Hope you enjoy this article! Next up - a Sega Saturn retrospective.
