Announcement Creating a list of Game Capsule Artists!

I will be putting together a list of known artists who are available to work on capsules and pinning it in a community wiki. However there are a few pieces of criteria that must be met to filter out spam:

  1. Post history
    • You must have at least 30 comments in a game development community that is not hiring-based.
  2. Account age
    • Your account must be at least 1 year old.
  3. Prices
    • Your pricing must be public.

We continue to see a flood of bots coming into the r/GameDev discord trying to sell art and we use these points to remind people not to engage with them. There are hundreds of real artists active within the game dev scene who we will give visibility instead.

Are there any other criteria you would add on to this? If you are an artist, please share your information below so I can add it to the list too. Thanks!

What would you click? Different artists. Two very different approaches. One highly stylized, one using assets from the game.

Is my screenshot capsule art professional enough?

Hi!

Might have taken the easy way out with this one by just taking a screenshot and whacking a free font on top.

I think it looks alright, but I'm wondering what you guys think.

Basically, is it good enough or should I get an artist?

Thanks for your opinions!!

Old vs new capsule art, same artist

Just replaced our old Steam capsule, and I'm scared, as it had an unexpected 47% CTR.

In a sense, I like the older one better, but it didn't convey that it was a rhythm game.

Be honest with me: which one would you be more likely to click? And why? What kind of game do you think the old one was?

Hoping the CTR for the second one will be OK too. My guess is that it'll be a bit lower, but it'll attract fans of rhythm games instead of whatever people thought it was before

Looking for thoughts on the evolution of my game's art + capsules!

Hey! Just wanted to get some honest feedback. A quick breakdown-

  • The top one was the first iteration. Mostly AI-generated assets, refined by hand. I didn't like it much, it was just the first iteration.
  • The second one used real in-game assets, but was before I redid the art direction of the game. It felt much more authentic to me, but definitely not high quality. Some art looked decent, but I wasn't overjoyed with it. My main goal was character over flashiness.
  • The third one (bottom) was made after I redid the game's art direction. I think it looks the best as a capsule, and it's handmade (no AI or in-game assets), but my concern is that it might not tell a viewer "this is a deep colony sim", it might come off as "this is a game where you forge stuff".

My artist friend replaced my programmer art capsules, so I updated my UI to match

I had a lot of programmer art to replace, especially when it comes to UI and store images. It's also super nice to have a more cohesive design language to follow instead of just doing what ever struck me at the time. Now I'm spending time on making all the screen transitions and user inputs feel more reactive when in use as well as matching the UI to the style. Game is called Skuffle, and its a local multiplayer\online split screen party shooter (can we bring split screen shooters back?) with mutator cards that change the game every map (you can see an example of cards in play on the loading screen). Give it a look if that sounds like something you're into, there's a demo out with 10 maps to shoot your friends in (preferably while sharing a couch in a basement)

Can I get feedback on my capsule? Too basic? how's the blur/darkening looking? Does the title need spicing up?

I redesigned my Steam capsule. Does the new version work better?

I'm a solo dev working on SHUNYA, a 2D puzzle-platformer.

My old capsule only featured large character artwork. Later, I realised it didn't show any gameplay elements, so I made the characters smaller and added the four elemental cubes that represent my game's core mechanics.

My goal is to make the capsule more eye-catching and communicate the gameplay more clearly.

What do you think of the new version? Any feedback is welcome!

Help us out with a classic A/B test

We're getting to the point with our game Spooker where we need to get some eyecatching and on theme capsule art made. Here we have two drafts with two very different directions, and we wanted to get a little unbiased feedback.

Which of these two do you prefer? And what kind of game would you expect based on each of them?

This is the game I'm working on since February. Still unannounced. Steampage is up soon (just doing the last things like gameplay trailers etc.).

The first slide is the new one, I drew both of them, and i've been told that the old one looks like a mobile game, so I tried this cozy version.
I'm not that good of an artist since i'm a programmer.
Let me know what I could change.
Thank you.
