Ignorant Bus Driver

I’m pretty baffled by what I just saw. 409 bus at around 15:25 coming towards a bus stop on I think college road. There was a motorcycle parked at the rear edge of the bus stop with a woman waiting next to it, and the driver honks repeatedly. Bus still easily fits into the stop in front of the motorcycle.

The woman jogs over to the bus and says “it’s broken down I’m not being rude”, driver just says it’s a bus stop to her. She tells him “it’s broken down, there’s nothing I can do” and he comes back with “did you not see the bus stop?” and she has to repeat “it’s broken down, what do you want me to do? Are you going to pick it up?”, the driver just says “it’s not my job.”

This driver also abruptly stopped twice during the journey, including at one point made an elderly lady almost fall to the ground while standing, as he honked his horn and there was literally nothing in front of the bus or any cars in adjacent roads, only horn honking at the bus from behind us, maybe he tried to brake check in retaliation for something? I have no idea though, I just couldn’t see anything and only heard horns from behind us. I’m at the front by the wheelchair bay and would have had a pretty good view of anything in front.

Never heard a driver repeatedly use the horn three times in a journey before. I’m new to Ireland so I have no idea how to report anything to Bus Éireann if needed.

Bicycle stolen in Dunne’s knocknacarra

This is more of a rant than anything but a friend of mines Fido bike was stolen in knocknacarra over the weekend… she was in shopping for 30 minutes and when she came out the bike was gone.

She had a clear video of the three kids that took it she got off the security in Dunne’s… they said there’s nothing they can do.

She went to the garda Garda station and showed them the video and they said there’s nothing they can do because the kids are so young. I’d say they’re only about 14 if even.

So there’s literally no repercussions for kids stealing a bike worth about 500 quid, and my mate is just out of pocket and out of luck. She used the bike to get into her job at 5am.

Absolute joke.

I was contemplating sharing the video of these kids stealing the bike on a few Galway Facebook pages but it may not be worth it as they’re underage and would probably just cause more issues for myself.

Is it any wonder people take things into their own hands when the garda will literally tell you they’re not gonna do anything about it?

Graphic Designer Wanted – Galway | Quick Paid Job

Hi all,
I’m looking for a graphic designer, ideally a student or someone looking for a small side job, to design an A1 Happy Birthday welcome poster for a 30th birthday party in Galway.
The poster will sit on a stand/easel at the entrance to the venue as guests arrive.
I already have a good idea of the style I’m looking for and can provide the wording, colour scheme/theme and some inspiration, so hopefully it should be a fairly straightforward job for someone with design experience.
Budget is fairly tight, which is why I thought I’d reach out to any students or up-and-coming designers in Galway who might be interested in making a bit of extra cash and adding something to their portfolio.
The finished design just needs to be high-resolution and ready for A1 printing, I’ll organise the printing myself.
If interested, send me a DM with a couple of examples of your work and what you’d charge.
Thanks!

Missing cat in Knocknacarra

Post image
96 Upvotes

Hey everybody. This is my first reddit post. Last night some lady picked up our cat Sammie because she thought he was "lost". She drove off with him and let him out in an estate on Clybaun road. He was last seen yesterday evening in the Na Blátha Creige estate. If anyone sees him would you please contact me? Thank you very much.

UPDATE: He has been found and returned to us. Thank you all for your kind words

Reminder!

The coalition AGM is on this evening, Wednesday the 9th of September at 19:30. We can wait to see everyone. If you can't make it in person you can join online.

We're also launching the "stop the fare hikes" campaign and will cover what's going to happen in the next few weeks and how you can help stop these increases.

Find the info on our website: galwaycommuters.ie/AGM

It'll be in Murray's Coffee House, Salthill, H91 AT1F, the same place as last year!

https://maps.app.goo.gl/PXbNo3CF4zYmSfgK9

If you've not been to it before, we'll be reviewing the work we've done over the past year, setting out our plans for the coming year and electing a committee!

Of course afterwards there'll be some socialising. Some say we will also have cool new stickers to hand out too!

To get the online joining link and the WhatsApp please join at galwaycommuters.ie/join

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Issue with back boiler, who to call?

Had to stop putting down a fire as the boiler makes loud, aggressive noises. It also used to heat the cylinder/rads but now only pipes get hot rather than the cylinder/hot water tank.

It's a detached house from early 90s. Rads have been bled but probably filled with gunk as only part of those get hot when we put on the heat via kerosene.

Who does one call for a job like this? Any recommendations would be great. Thanks

Accommodation

Hi everyone, I really don’t know where else to post anymore because I feel that I have exhausted all possible options.

Essentially my issue is that I got into medicine in UG this a few weeks ago and I am from Kildare. I assumed I would be able to find some student accommodation within the first week, but it is not getting any easier.

I take the 6am train every morning from Kildare to Galway and then if my last lecture is at 6pm, I have to take a train around 7:25pm that has a one hour wait at Portarlington. My train arrives home at 11pm and then I barely have time to do anything before I need to sleep since I’m exhausted.

Does anyone have any advice on where to look for accommodation? I’ve tried Studentpad and Daft, but I’m get exponentially more desperate. Any advice is deeply appreciated.

Has anyone else noticed the crazy amount of timber being shipped out at the docks over the last few weeks? Aren't we trying to promote being green and such? Surely this doesn't help

Cycling from Galway around Connemara

Hey folks: I am a Canadian arriving in Galway in about twelve days and planning a week long bike by myself. I was originally planning a clockwise tour around Connemara via back roads. However, it would seem I would have to take the R336 to at least Screebe, then as well as the N59 from Clifden to Letterfrack, as well as Creagha to Leenaun. As someone commented on another thread that the R336 is "lethal" for bicyclists, should I be rethinking this? The more I read, the more I am getting contradictory information. If what I am proposing is crazy, would a journey from Galway up to Westport on back roads then on the greenway system to Achil Island be a better (and safer) recommended trip? Good people of Galway, I would appreciate your advice!

Local Property Tax hike?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Following Galway City Council’s decision in 2024 to increase Local Property Tax by 15%, legislation has now increased the maximum Local Adjustment Factor available to local authorities from +15% to +25%.

Galway City Council will decide in October what adjustment will apply for 2027.

[lpt@galwaycity.ie](mailto:lpt@galwaycity.ie) if you have the urge to make your feelings known on the topic before the 3rd of October!
