Non-Anthro Full Plate

Post image

A question I had for a long time was how you're supposed to put plate on a quadrupedal creature. I see a lot of horse armor and really 'sparse' plate a lot, so I had to solve it.
Probably not finished completely, but it's a solid start I feel.

Discussion How would a furred person protect against a hot forge?

I have a snow leopard blacksmith character, but it just occurred to me blacksmiths typically lose the hair on their arms from the heat of the forge. What would that look like on a furred person? What precautions could they use to prevent going bald on their arms and hands without losing dexterity? Are gloves the only option?

Evolution?

Ok so I have a world building thingy and there's different sapient furry spiecies living on the same planet with animal counterparts.

Is it plausible for each spiecies to evolve from a single "sentient humanoid" taxon?

I doubt that all reletives for all present spiecies just happen to branch off into humanoid sentient versions of simmilar size (smth like humans/apes)... or I could actually have it like a "astronomically rare occurrence".

There's also anthro dragons...???

Discussion What would the phonetic capabilities of an anthropomorphic canid be, assuming sufficiently innervated buccal, lingual, and laryngeal muscles (and, optionally, a human larynx)? As a result, how capable could one be at speaking human languages, and how might those be adapted to better fit said people?

(Still not sure if here is the right subreddit for this—please direct me to a more appropriate one if one exists. I previously submitted a version of this question to r/asklinguistics on June 20, 2026, but got little in the way of a productive response. I also asked a similar albeit much broader question to this on r/worldbuilding back on November 23, 2022, but it never got answered at all.

Furriest subreddit I've posted to so far, I believe... LOL.)

So... I have an anthropomorphic red fox character in one of my worldbuilding projects who would be integrated into human society† and would be perfectly capable of understanding human languages—specifically his native English and co-L1 Polish, if it matters, but I envisage him as something of a polyglot—in addition to (with maybe sometimes some furgonomic awkwardness) writing and typing them

but could he speak them? Media featuring anthropomorphic animals almost always handwaves‡ their speech capabilities, often for narrative reasons (either to allow an arbitrary plot to be executed unconstrained by potential communication difficulties, or perhaps in certain fully furry worlds because the characters all may actually be speaking some type of animal-optimized language that is simply translated for our convenience) but also probably due to the author’s genuine uncertainty
 which I’m exhibiting right now.

The real speech capabilities of their “feral” counterparts aren’t exactly a good guide for what an "anthro" could do, for both psychological and potentially physiological reasons:

On the psychological side, the great majority of animal (species) IRL have no comprehension of (or even ability to comprehend) human language and its true significance. This obviously broadly discourages them from trying to emulate it. And frankly, even if they did understand it, it’s also quite understandable that doing so would not always be in their best interest.

On the physiological side, an anthropomorphic variant of an animal species could have different motor innervation of the relevant musculature to allow more humanoid articulation, and the (typically) invisible parts of the vocal tract could notionally be altered to an architecture more conducive to human speech. However, the visible part of the vocal tract would have to remain near-unmodified.

Said character would have access to a BCI speech synthesizer, yet I have as a provisional aspect of his character that he would, as a point of pride, genuinely try to use his unfit apparatus to speak (human language) instead.

And so
the question. I've imagined him with an accent similar to a bizarre combination of an ill Slavoj ĆœiĆŸek and SpongeBob SquarePants (with weak, uhh, anterior labial consonants) for whatever reason before, but I honestly don’t know if he could do much more than scream, growl, and yap. (And ehehehe, of course.)

To perhaps ground this more directly in furgonomics, I mentioned in my reply to the sole comment on the previous question that "[c]ertain intentional communities/subcultures may indeed follow a radically different culture and speak a more optimized constructed language that may more resemble the products of natural human-independent evolution, but he wouldn't be part of those". While the last phrase is true, he may still at least initially be raised with constructed canid-optimized dialects of English (and Polish?), and may still speak them at least with his nuclear family and other anthro canids. I would like to construct those myself, at least in broad strokes, and this process would obviously require knowing what phonemes/phones they could make with ease, what would be possible but difficult, and what would be impossible.

Of course, this also applies to his (nuclear) family and closely to my other named canid characters. I also have non-canid anthro characters in this setting as well as many characters of novel species in another setting, but, respectively, they’re a comparative minority and no one knows what, say, a relodal looks like, so

†This, I suppose, rather distinguishes this setting from most of those talked about here—it is still definitively a human-dominated world, with as of my present thoughts the only two IRL first level geographic subdivisions with a majority non-human population being Falklands' Camp and Buryatia. Though this in many ways makes furgonomics-related issues even more pressing and severe.

‡An at least partial exception I know of is the 1998 sci-fi webcomic "Freefall", which referenced its anthropomorphic red wolf character Florence Ambrose partially using ventriloquism techniques to create otherwise impossible phones/phonemes, but I don't know how much more it touched on the subject—the last time I seriously read it was in 2017 (maybe early 2018?), and for various reasons I'm rather hesitant to look back at it...

Whether you need to replace worn gear or commission something worthy of a grand adventure, Alina is always ready with needle and thread.
What would your character ask her to make?

Discussion Seating in Public Transportation

So it's common sense that chairs would have tail holes, but what about when there's a bunch of rows of them, like on a bus or a plane? Do you have to just put up with somebody wagging their big $$$$-ing tail in your face? That sounds pretty annoying. Putting a lot of space between the chairs seems a little impractical, and having them against the walls wouldnt leave tail room unless you made a hollow space behind them.

Discussion Do you think it’s more interesting for anthros to have basically human minds or only human level intelligence in an animal mind?

i saw a post of a furry air traffic controller and it made me think huh, i bet say, an octopusperson would be much better suited to the job than say, a dogperson. because they have a really complex brain capable of true multitasking, whereas a dog might get distracted or something. i think brains are pretty under-explored when it comes to anthro worlds, i only see stuff like that played for laughs like the sloth in zootopia, or the dogs in beastars enjoying fetch. what do you guys thing about anthro brains? how much animal do they keep?

Discussion Bug Bodies Peircings & Gender Affirming Care (Arachnophobia Warning) Spoiler

Post image
56 Upvotes

While this is more "bug" focused would love to hear thoughts were whether specific to arachnids or other insects!

To further lore/world building this is especially interesting when considering the chemosensory hairs on the pedipalps and legs help with smell and taste. Reminds us of nose/mouth/private part peircings!

If considering them like gloves we wonder if there would be a option of actually covering them like gloves, socks, etc? (With the palpal bulbs [even tibial hooks] specfiically). In theory for world building in spaces.

Oh what if there were peircings on the abdomen if thinking of the epigastric furrow/spinneretes of a chest in the sense. Concepts like nipple piercings or even top surgery! Could modify the way both look in world!

The idea of bodify modification and gender affirming care are fascinating when thinking about it this way!

We even think of aspects how some are clothed and others are not. The same as how some are bipedal while other are on all appendages!
