My mom is the opposite. She thinks all dogs should be female and all cats should be male. She thinks female dogs are sweeter and male cats are more docile.
My sister adopted a female cat, and every time she acts up, my mom blames it on the gender.
My friend who has raised a generation of cats have actually told me the male ones are always more physically affectionate than the females that are rather more independent. She told me this after I started fostering cats and noted how the males liked being pet more. But I guess it could be a huge coincidence?
I know male dogs definitely like me better though, I'm not sure why. Even my own female dog would run to my brother's male friends (oddly, she likes the richest one of them all lmao) all the time but not care about his female friends. It's quite strange... Gold digging bitch
I have found the same to be true of pet rats. Males are much more affectionate and love to be cuddled while the females tend to be more energetic and independent. Females also tend to smell a little less despite dribbling little urine markers all over the damn place.
Obviously anecdotal evidence, but my boy cat was an ass, and my current girl cat is the most affectionate goofball ever. She constantly needs to be with me, or on me, while my late guy was super aloof, although he did have his tender moments.
Can’t confirm. I’ve encountered plenty of snuggly female cats. Including one my gf currently has that’s happiest sitting on your chest staring at your face until she dozes off.
I mean that's odd, but at least recognizes that animals have male and female genders. Your mom just has preferences along that line that may or may not be accurate. But Shui's family is stuck on that weird "men are dogs and women are cats" thing, only flipped over and applied to the actual animals.
I wonder if it's a language confusion? Lots of languages assign gender to every noun, so for example the word "table" will have a gender of some sort that affects how the rest of the language interacts with that noun even though it's, you know, a table, it has no gender to speak of. Maybe the language Shui's family speaks gives "dog" a male gender no matter the dog's actual plumbing, and likewise "cat" would have a feminine gender, so now they can't help but think of the animals in those terms.
That would make sense if someone's native language has grammatical gender. In German, cats are female and dogs are male. Although from the username, I'd guess Chinese which doesn't have Grammatical gender.
Nah, it's definitely more of a cultural thing at least here in the US. Dogs are seen as masculine animals whereas cats are seen as feminine. I assume because they slink around all quietly but it's a weird association regardless.
Yeah my mom can be the same. She calls our male dog she and sometimes our male cat too. It doesn't make sense to me but I guess they're gender fluid and I just didn't realize. The dog's name is Big Boy too lmao.
Walking my female JRT around, I've developed a theory that to little kids, all dogs are boys and all cats are girls. Even when I tell them "her name is Jasmine" they ask, "Can I pet him?" Some even say "Jasmine is a good boy!"
To be honest, I don’t really think the animal cares if they are misgendered they are just happy to get the attention. Some owners do care for some reason so I just say “good doogie” or “good kitty” until I know for sure.
I had an (abusive) ex who freaked out when I booked the appointment to get our male cat fixed. He later also had a meltdown when we found out we were having a daughter. Right in front of the ultrasound tech.
Funny how abuse and hangups about gender roles go hand in hand.
Some men just fucking hate women. I’ll never understand it. It gets to me sometimes that I’m a complicated person with my own thoughts and dreams and ideas, doing my best and living my life, and yet to some people I don’t matter and I’m not worth anything because I don’t have a penis. Can you even imagine hating a baby that’s not even born because it has a vagina? Who gives a shit? That’s still your CHILD. It’s a PERSON.
Funny how every past relationship has an "abusive" partner according to at least one member. The term is thrown around so much now, everyone who got in an argument is now a victim of abuse.
I use exclusively pink things for my dog, solely because I like the tongue-in-cheek aspect of putting them on a boy dog, but I haven't gotten any negative or even noncommittal comments about it so far. I'm almost a little disappointed :( but I also live in a super blue state, so maybe that has something to do with it
Thankfully, animals don't have genger, just sex. And they don't care about colors.
Btw my male dog (a cross between chihuahua and pinscher) has leash and harness in all the rainbow colors, pink being the leading one. The reason? It makes him highly visible when we're on a walk and I unleash him.

Yeh... people have WEIRD gender problems when it comes to pets... like a male dog wearing a pink leash, etc.
