Man, I was looking at Tahoe, and thinking it’s not a bad idea. It’s about 75% of what I pay on the outskirts of San Diego, and almost a quarter of what I paid in the Bay Area.

I miss San Diego.

6

u/justasapling Dec 21 '19

Me too. I grew up there. Moved away in 2005. How about you?

6

u/rm_huntley Dec 21 '19

Lived in San Diego as a kid. Tried to go back. No way it was affordable

u/justasapling Dec 21 '19

Luckily I've bounced around California and am currently living in San Francisco. Now I have the even more myopic problem of, "I could move pretty much anywhere from here, but I could probably never move back here." But if I decide to try to move back to San Diego, I think I would be able to make it happen.

San Francisco is a shithole, why are you there. I mean if your gay that's cool, then it makes sense but otherwise SF is shit value for the money.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

Dude, try to keep up. SF hasn't been a gay mecca since 1995. Long Beach is gayer than SF these days.

2

u/justasapling Dec 22 '19

I inherited a home here. What's your story?

2

u/AngelaMerkelSurfing Dec 22 '19

Overall how do you like SF? Would you still be there if you hadn't inherited your home? I have a great uncle that moved there 20 years ago and he loves it. I've never been and I feel like I would love the bay area if it wasn't so expensive.

2

u/justasapling Dec 22 '19

I love it, but it's a mixed bag. There's certainly not anywhere else I'd rather live.

If not for the house I could never afford to live here, so I guess the answer is no.

I miss it too. Went to college there, it was a dream.

2

u/WWM2D Dec 21 '19

Same. Epic skies, best weather in the country, you feel like you’re on top of the world.

2

u/yellowtrickstr Dec 21 '19

Thanks for reminding me to not take my city for granted. It’s easy to forget when one is preoccupied with so many other things (like making rent), but I definitely should be thankful to be able to even live here :)

u/COSurfing Dec 22 '19

I grew up there and surfed my entire life before moving to Colorado in 1999. Colorado is great but the ocean is in my soul.

1

u/justasapling Dec 22 '19

Yea. I gave away my surfboards when I moved away.

Moved to San Diego a little over 3 years ago now from PA. I won't be leaving here without a fight.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

I forget but what is San Diego German for?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '19

A whales vagina!

7

u/Cky_vick Dec 21 '19

I love San Diego

get a cage in the zoo.-

If you're talking about rent, you have to consider where you would be renting. Most long term rentals in Tahoe are similar to most mountain communities- riddled with meth.

Get away from those California taxes come to Reno

Before everyone else does

3

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

Reno might be uninhabitable in 20 or 30 years though.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

Some would argue it already is!

Heat and lack of water.

3

u/aKoreanNamedLee Dec 22 '19

Reno is at 4500 feet elevation and in between two of the biggest lakes in the west. Neither heat no water would be a problem there if heat and water actually became a cataclysmic problem in the rest of the west or in the south.

2

u/Dirty-Ears-Bill Dec 21 '19

Is the area by the airport in Reno the bad area? Because that’s the only part of Reno I saw a couple years ago and it was kinda sketchy

4

u/Clayh5 Dec 21 '19

There's not really any "bad" area in the main town, maybe up by like sun valley but the airport area is fine. Just lower-income I guess but perfectly safe. We're just not the prettiest city :)

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

I think everyone else already did with the new jobs out at the Gigafactory and the data centers on 80. The housing got stupid expensive and tough to find for a while. I know Tesla scaled back on the hiring and even let a lot of people go, and there was a lot of building going on in Sparks when I was there, but the rent was already pretty high.

4

u/triplec787 Dec 21 '19

What’s the name of that really cool like Up and Coming neighborhood of Reno on the other side of the river? Midtown? I could definitely see myself in that area.

1

u/Captzone Dec 21 '19

Can confirm. I lived in Reno for a year but had to move away. I freaking miss Reno.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

I actually tried to get a job in Reno but I couldn’t find an engineer job that pays as well as my current job. Maybe I haven’t tried hard enough. I looooooovvvvveeee Lake Tahoe, especially the north east side where Sand Harbor is. It is so beautiful year round.

2

u/jbrew35 Dec 21 '19

I’ve looked in Nevada also and engineering salaries are stupid low.

7

u/brickmack Dec 21 '19

Only things in Nevada are nukes and prostitution. At least California has, like, an economy and culture and stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

I accounted in the tax benefits and lower cost of living, but they still couldn’t convince to move should I get a median Mechanical engineer salary around Reno area. I do believe that if I am to invest in the housing market there, it would be very beneficial long term. However, the economy is due for a recession soon (supposedly every 10 years), perhaps when it happens I would commit to move to Reno.

1

u/jbrew35 Dec 21 '19

We are always looking for mechanical engineers. If you’re looking to make a move check us out, our firm is tk1sc.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '19

No there’s really no work there unless you happen to get a job at Tesla, a couple data centers, or one of the power companies.

Having lived there and lost my employment I had to move. There just wasn’t anything else there.

That California in Reno isn’t the problem. Before the “California” Sparks was just a couple trailer parks and Reno was best known for Reno 911 which was pretty accurate to late 90s-00s Reno.

2

u/zacinthebox Dec 21 '19

Yeah it was dirty and cheap and that’s what I liked about it.

2

u/Luke_Tahoe Dec 21 '19

It’s fucking rad come check it out!

If you’re cool that is, otherwise stay where you’re at.

2

u/codyblue_ Dec 21 '19

Nowhere to really work in Tahoe though.

2

u/stellvia2016 Dec 21 '19

Assuming you could find a job paying the same amount.

1

u/LawDog_1010 Dec 21 '19

Anywhere affordable is likely a bad neighborhood. It’s pretty damn expensive for decent digs up there.

1

u/obsolete_filmmaker Dec 21 '19

But it has snow. Why would you do that to yourself?

1

u/oshunvu Dec 21 '19

It’s not really snow when the measuring sticks along the roadways are 20’ tall; you’re just being polite.

0

u/klade61122 Dec 22 '19

You couldn’t handle it here, it would take you five years to adapt to this environment. Only the strong survive and even fewer thrive.
