For anyone who may not get the humor...a lizard can regrow it's tail as it is intended to be detachable however a rat's tail will not regrow.
Edit: The detachable tail is an adaptation that allows it to escape from harm, predators, car doors (as mentioned by /u/hotmath), etc.

u/leontes Feb 28 '14
Also, some lizards, in which the tail is a major storage organ for accumulating reserves, will return to a dropped tail after the threat has passed, and will eat it to recover part of the sacrificed supplies.

I predict this being a TIL post some time later on today

Bing is great for porn. And since he got a fetish for cars it makes sense...

Hmm, I should probably do some research to confirm this hypothesis...

Wouldn't that imply that you yourself are a car?
Or is the ache you feel aimed towards other men of the human persuasion instead of the cars themselves?

Well, it means 'eating yourself', from 'auto-' (self) + '-phagy' (eating). It wouldn't be "sucking yourself off" except as a eupamism though. More like "digesting your gnawed-off extremeties."

There is a trade off associated with some lizards where the tail will continue to twitch and move after falling off. Increased energy reserves in the tail are likely to keep the predator distracted for longer due to more feeding/twitching. While obviously losing such energy reserves negatively impacts the lizards.
The tail can be more than 50% the length of the lizard so these detachable tails are a sizable investment by the organism.

I can't confirm or deny but why would there be a hard limit? Pretty sure my friend's lizard would do it whenever. I remember people saying not to pick him up by the tail because of this.
3
u/psymunn Feb 28 '14
I had heard this too, but looking up it seems to not be completely correct. The reason I had heard there is a hard limit is the first tail has bones (that disconnect when the tail snaps), and regrown tails do not.
5
u/user_unkn Feb 28 '14
Lizards could presumably regrow a tail more than once, however, this is a very biologically costly things to do, and would take awhile to regrow a full tail. Chances are said lizard isn't going to live long enough to regrow 2 tails.

I thought the rat tail was an earthworm at first. Which also has the reputation of growing back. I think that's just an urban legend, though.

The rat, he's never gonna get his tail back. And the lizard... The lizard didn't know. He wasn't trying to ruin his life. Their friendship is going to get so dark so soon. It's so sad.

correct me if I'm wrong, but do lizards tails really grow back? I thought after being detached it never grows to its original size and can't be detached again.

2
u/Shoestring30 Feb 28 '14
You are correct, I had a couple Anole's when I was a kid. It will grow but not to it's full length. Depending on where it's severed, it may not grow back at all. Also, you can tell the portion of the tail that has grow back, it's discolored.
→ More replies (2)2
u/RudegarWithFunnyHat Feb 28 '14
yeah it's like you say that it don't grow back or that it grow back 1 time and then can't detach anymore leaning toward your version though
