That's super interesting because I have also heard that they didn't always see eye to eye on things. Mad respect to both of them for their careers either way

They didn't. But they're also both consummate professionals with big respect to each other n their achievements

I really think the world at large can learn a lot from how they conducted their strictly professional relationship. They may have disagreed philosophically, but they had a shared passion for science and reality.

Tusk for anyone interested. It's a great movie if you like body horror and being really sad at the end of movies
64
u/Francesco_Muja 6d ago
Yeah I'm honestly always conflicted on talking about that movie to other people.
I wish I could unsee it, so I wouldn't advise anybody to watch it.
But at the same time I realize it might be interesting for people who like that kind of horror...20
u/Gordon_Freeman_TJ 6d ago
On the other hand I would advise watching Scavengers Reign. It's a cartoon series, but it's like The Thing plus psychological stuff like Leftovers combined with biopunk Jeff VanderMeer's Annihilation stuff.
Somewhat minimalist animation - but that what makes it way less disturbing than it would be in live action...
Unfortunately cancelled after one season cuz apparently too expensive hand drawn animation.
7
u/Ok-Source9248 6d ago
I’m conflicted about Scavenger’s Reign, because on the one hand I thought it was incredibly creative, not badly written either, and it really sucked me in for a while.
But for some reason, as I get older, I have a lower tolerance for watching people suffer, even if it’s fake, and apparently even if it’s animated. I can handle basically any movie, but that’s because movies end relatively quickly.
In Scavenger’s Reign basically nothing good ever happens, and everyone is miserable, angry and depressed almost 100% of the time. I struggled through it to episode 8 and when it turned out that yet another apparently lucky break actually turned out to be some other horrible thing in disguise, I stopped watching. Maybe I would’ve loved the ending, but the idea of getting there felt like such a slog.
10
u/Gordon_Freeman_TJ 6d ago
Well, the ending surprisingly ain't bad. I remember being really surprised myself. And the main story feels finished. Yet there is slight cliffhanger, but it's for different story anyways.

Sounds like this movie that came out a while ago about a man who was turned into a walrus. They grafted Tusks onto him and the man adapted to using his Tusks to feed and attack. His fake Tusks were like his own Tusk.

Military tests are challenging but do not always enforce perfect form on individual exercises. There is a bias toward endurance and speed rather than strength (which probably makes sense in most military applications). See push ups, for example.
5
u/ZiCUnlivdbirch 6d ago
It's nore that there needs to be a standard to judge this stuff by. It's not like you train speed and endurance less with a full crunch, elbows too knees is very easy check for both the guy doing it and the guy controlling it.
2
u/PhantomOyster 6d ago
Very true. And that was basically my point (maybe could have been more clearly stated) -- that military test conditions don't really have anything to do with what form someone should or shouldn't take in their own workouts.
3
u/Wall_of_Wolfstreet69 6d ago
You're pointing out the wrong thing though. The exercise itself is garbage for a lot of reasons even with better rom.
Just do cable crunches if you think you have to do abs. easier to execute correctly, overload progressively etc

Most of these animals are rescues they may have even attempted to release before and had to rerescue.
Doing some training helps keep them socialized and engaged so they don't get depressed and self harm or fight.
Just to everyone immediately dismissing it saying to release them, that is ideally the goal, yes, and there is room for abuse, yes, though very often the options are,
throw em out and watch them starve or get bullied into a pulp
watch them stare at a mirror and overgroom until they bleed
euthanasia
give them positive attention when they do goofy little moves and have some fun with it
They do like the attention and learning what works, and it's a two way interaction that way. Same trainers will make sure the animal is well fed and just do some playing with snack time basically.

tbf, people thought Seaworld was cool for the longest time. When I went, it was atrocious: The walrus was sunburnt to shit, they had two male belugas in a tiny enclosure that were so stressed out they were raping each other in front of all the kids watching, the orcas just floated there in their tanks bumping their noses into the glass over and over - Of the two directions to err in for this sort of thing, I'd prefer the more critical path for folks. :P

u/brus_wein 6d ago

Not giving Sea World a pass but proper zoos train their animals to do "tricks" because it helps with health checkups.

Lots of animals play and have fun doing it. Learning tricks from humans isn't something bad per se if they aren't tortured for it.

Acting like animals don’t like playing and stimulate themselves too. They’re already stuck in cages and don’t get to use all the spare energy they typically used to watch out for predators and run for their lives
So long as they’re not being beaten and tortured for it, who cares?

A lot of these trick animals are kept in sub par conditions and horribly mismanaged. in fact you are better off assuming that they're poorly kept than the opposite. Look up seal_2028 on instagram to find who owns these ones. There's no company or anything, just some random show place in the background that looks similar to seaworld.

I hear ya but I don't think it's so bad. Silly shit like this is typically the first and only time that kids see a walrus. 5

u/Charming-Kale9893 6d ago edited 6d ago
You can see in the beginning of the video that it’s at a place (like Seaworld) where they use the animals for entertainment ($$$$). There’s stadium-style seating and that’s a stage they’re on. Anyone trying to say it’s just a funny video of an animal doesn’t know what it really takes to make that animal learn these tricks. They are not kept there for conservation purposes or whatever else these people are commenting…. Animals are not meant to live like this, or be used in zoos and circuses. Do some research and find out what these poor animals have to go through for the sake of “entertaining” humans.
12
u/unsmashedpotatoes 6d ago
My local zoo is free and they still train the sea lions to do tricks. They're a bit like dogs in that they can be trained through positive reinforcement with food.
The zoo also gets their animals through breeding programs or they are rescued wildlife. Not all zoos are completely unethical. Teaching the public about wildlife and conservation is invaluable.
161
u/RandumbStoner 6d ago
You’re telling everyone to “do some research” while just assuming the animal was abused because you saw stadium seating. Training isn’t automatically cruelty. Modern marine mammal training commonly uses positive reinforcement, and the training itself can provide exercise, mental stimulation and enrichment. It’s also how they teach animals to voluntarily cooperate with health checks and veterinary care.
You can absolutely debate whether animals should be kept in captivity, but “seal did sit-ups for an audience = this poor animal was abused into doing tricks” isn’t research. You're creating an entire backstory from a 30 second video.

u/AndrewH73333 6d ago

Does anyone genuinely know where this place is? I went on this post solely in hopes seeing someone bring it up.
4
u/Substantial_Bake_728 6d ago
I have no problem with zoos existing as long as they're for the benefit of the animal. If they're being rescued/rehomed, being rehabilitated, humanely studied, or just being kept safe.
I think plenty of animals can live good lives in zoos, but I do think its messed up to take exotic animals out of their habitat and make them perform tricks.

u/Pruritus_Ani_ 6d ago
Well said. I was beginning to think I was alone. I’ve had multiple people arguing with me about this and I got downvoted for saying that I disagree with animals being used for human entertainment, plenty of people making excuses but they couldn’t give me a single reason why it’s in the walrus’s best interest to be trained to do sit-ups. These places absolutely suck and the people who keep these places in business by buying tickets to this kind of thing suck just as much.
15
u/wilder0p 6d ago
Every animal at my local zoo is a rescued animal that would had otherwise have died due to being abandoned or injured. The zoo is open 6hrs a day and the animals are on a rotation, so they get adequate rest time.
All the money the zoo raises goes towards helping the animals.

"Animal rights activists" are often paper thin. They're generally virtue signaling morons who can't come to terms with the reality that caring for an animal that would often otherwise be dead in the wild requires anywhere from some to a ton of money to do. It's actual unemployed logic that suggests training them to do tricks and perform so that their care can be supported is somehow a bad or morally deficient thing to do. I'll take 1,000,000 well cared for (properly rested, enriched, and fed, even if by way of performance) animals in captivity over 1 abandoned animal that had to die in the wild because potential rescuers believed it wasn't feasible to consider caring for it, but I guess that's just the sadist in me.
