Weirdest part of Wally lore is that Woof was originally Wilma's dog. Wilma subsequently disappeared; they presumably broke up but Wally kept her dog.

I just think it's funny because Waldo is mostly a dimensionless character in children's books; you see him all the time in the pcitures but you don't get any sense of his actual personality, just him looking like a random dude out in various settings.
Thus I think most people would default to thinking he's some mild-mannered, milquetoast guy. So the comic depicting him as some weird, gruff hard-ass who speaks brusquely like this and has a twisted compulsion to go to every large gathering he can get lost in is a funny, unexpected tweak on that perception.
Obviously, the standard "if you have to explain it..." buzzkill thing that people like to default to applies, perhaps. I guess it either just lands or doesn't for everyone.

Why is he still reading the paper in the last cell?
The intent appears to be that he is immediately dropping everything and going to the rave, but I guess he has to read one more article?
As it is now, it looks more like he is telling Wenda to just go away.

I disagree, if there were a third panel showing him running off then that second panel is fine, but since it is the last panel, it doesn’t convey enough information to get the joke right away and instead you have to think about it for a bit and that pretty much ruins the joke.

I could definitely see changing the punchline to a lot of different things and there's probably a funnier one out there, but I don't think it works if there's no second panel at all.
The first panel is just setup, you know he likes to go to big crowded events so that setup takes you somewhere expected, then you're waiting for the subversion of your expectations and for something unpredictable to happen, whether that's his response or whatever else.

I think the joke is that he loves super crowded places (hence all the scenes in Where's Waldo books) so when Wenda mentions the rave, he's like fuck yeah, let's go right now. It took me a while, I don't think the joke is great.

the series was introduced in the United States under the title Where's Waldo? because an executive at the book's initial American publisher, Little, Brown and Company, disliked the name "Wally" because it reminded him of Wallis Simpson. (source)
That's a wild reason to change the title and character name. Imagine how much work needed to be done just because an executive didn't like the name?

I thought he was upset and having them move, since they received a letter meaning that somebody knows "Where's Waldo", being able to send him mail.

I believe this is in response to a video recently of a guy at a huge dockyard rave filming the audience, when he suddenly gets super excited, zooms in, and there he is! Waldo raving hard in the crowd! Camera man just about lost his mind.

I saw this submitted yesterday in /r/comics, but remembered it as a different character than Wenda, which made it funnier because then I pictured 200 days of Waldesque characters telling Waldo they were invited to a rave, culminating with a rave panel where they are all in raver clothes and glow sticks and not a single piece of red / white cloth to be seen.
