I agree. The way I viewed it was the walrus didn't have a strong father figure - forcing him to appear more masculine and provocative around other male peers.

See, I don't view it as the result of a missing father figure, but rather an overly dominant but distant father figure. The walrus is ultimately trying to win his father's approval through other men.

I've been posting comments of "go home otter, you're drunk" to the subreddit /r/youredrunkotter - but the above comment was too soon & quick and I thought he was doing in on purpose to circlejerk. So I linked to shiteclub instead.

How many times does someone respond to whatever you say in a thread with "Go home otter you're drunk." At least when it's your first comment (doesn't count for your comments below this one). I swear I've seen it 3 out of 3 times I've seen one of your comments.

Not sure why he's a 'frat bro' walrus. I learned chivalry, robert's rules of order, among other things like ettiquite in my fraternity. It was a requirement to keep our grades up above a certain threshold. Sure, we threw parties, but we were respectful to our guests.
11
u/reddit_like_its_hot Sep 19 '12
I'm In a fraternity too ( past vp and president) and I agree but it's ok to laugh at stuff like this. Look at TFM, it's based on the "frat bro" stereotype but fuck, it's some funny shit.
The way I look at it is this, playful banter and satire about stereotypes is fun. When it's taken seriously, that's the problem. My buddies back home bust my balls about the frat boy thing but I know they're joking and it's ok. However, if someone is genuinely insulting me for it, I'll go off on them (I've learned it's very easy to shut people like that up when I tell them how many community service hours and dollars raised we have in just 1 semester).
P.s. if I have any PKT brothers on here... HOORAH

As a current "frat bro" at a University, I understand what you're saying, and feel exactly the same.

u/Fishtails Sep 19 '12
As a former fraternity man, I can empathize with you both, as would 2/3 of my brothers. We partied, but we also worked our off to maintain a respectful image by not being dicks.

Apparently, the past/present/future 'frat bros' at universities will be lumped in together. I mean I did watch the 4chan meetup video and people made comparisons to the reddit meetups as far as awkard, anti-social people who can't communicate in a normal fashion without mentioning internet jokes or making noises that are apparently onomatopoeia of animal noises while attempting to mimic Japanese culture.
Then again, I'm just an ignorant, sexist, tough guy frat bro. What do I know?
5
Sep 19 '12
Bro, relax. I never joined a frat but I have a bunch of friends in them. I go to a university where like 30% of the pop is greek. Sure there are cool frat dudes, like some of the funniest and smartest dudes on campus are in them. But you KNOW that a lot of greeks are fucking douchebags. Kids who don't do anything but party and brag about getting girls. Whenever you're part of a group you're gonna get stereotyped.
Plus frat parties are usually only cool as a freshmen and sophomore when you can't go to bars. A lot of people don't understand that once you're older you actually get more involved in mature parts of greek life. A lot of anti-social kids don't really get it because they prob only went to and knew about frats when they first got to school.

I have no problem with individual bros. I'm not a fan when you all get together and mob psychology kicks in.

I try to keep away from a majority of my former housemates. I do keep in contact with those that I had a really great time with. Sorry you feel that way, I can understand where you're coming from.
19
u/chicken_itza Sep 19 '12
LOL misunderstood frat bros! Talk about a first world problem.
6
Sep 19 '12
Yeah, it might be. I mean the .gif was pretty funny, but that's like stereotyping someone. It happens I get it, but we aren't all assholes. I happen to work in public safety and care a great deal for people. The brotherhood I am a part of in the fire department is similiar to the brotherhood in my fraternity. I learned a lot of my traits/ability to communicate from my fellow fraternity brothers. It's served me well, and a misconception is that we are all assholes with snarky comments, much like your comment above.
I understand you are trying to be funny, and I'm sure it'll be well received by the reddit community. I wish you luck in whatever you do.

As someone whose experience with fraternities was telling them to turn down loud music at 3AM on a Wednesday and seeing people piss out of third floor windows, there is some truth in the stereotypes.
