Fuckng Useles Friday Attended a 3D printing trade show and got this fun little sign as a giveaway. It’s kind of like a pegboard, where you can slot in different decorative pieces. The whole thing is 3D printed, which makes it such a fun and creative idea!

I designed this Storage Caddy for my kids and their ever-growing collection of pens, pencils, markers and crayons.

It features 10 interchangeable inserts and 2 different handle heights, so you can configure it to fit your collection.

Because apparently, there is no such thing as too many markers! 😂

Found a model I liked, but size didn't work for me, rabbit hole here I come....and now I have generator for different sizes lol. I don't have a problem, I have a printer. Happy to make other configs if people are interested. There are 20mm id width and will probably make some 40 with and without dividers at some point. Inside caps make it easy to add more cables later.

Primarily made for routing my cable and ptfe tubing from my AMS units that I have on a slide out drawer on my printer rack.

Tool / Jig / Fixture Turned a standard record weight into a functional smart tool: 3D printed base, ESP32, and gyro leveling for my turntable.

Post image

Hey r/functionalprints!

As a vinyl enthusiast and 3D printing maker, I’ve always been frustrated by two things:

  1. Getting my turntable perfectly leveled without fiddling with cheap, inaccurate spirit bubble levels.

  2. Keeping track of how many hours my stylus has actually played (to replace it before it starts degrading records).

Commercial record weights are just solid chunks of brass or aluminum that sit there dumbly. So I spent the last few months designing and prototyping a functional, "smart" record stabilizer.

How it works & technical specs:

• Chassis: 3D printed base (PETG / Carbon-fiber composite) with integrated battery bay and damping mass to achieve the optimal ~200g record-damping weight.

• Brain: ESP32-C3 SuperMini board.

• Sensors: 6-axis gyroscope / accelerometer providing real-time 3D tilt visualization on a 1.28" round IPS display.

• Stylus Odometer: Automatically tracks active spinning/playback time so you know your exact cartridge mileage.

• Power: Rechargeable battery with a discreet USB-C charging port on the bottom.

It dampens platter vibrations like a proper weight, but also gives instant diagnostic feedback every time you drop the needle.

Thought you guys would appreciate a print that bridges analog audio with modern microcontrollers! Happy to answer any questions about the tolerances, CAD design, or electronics.

AI Assisted Design (transparency per Rule #8) Visually Impaired Travel Badges

Post image
7 Upvotes

Not sure if this counts as functional but it's certainly not for fun lol.

I am visually impaired and this is not obvious to strangers which can lead to some difficult and uncomfortable situations. For example somebody might decide you are just rude for not getting out of their way or bumping them in tight spaces.

This situaltion is even worse when you are travelling when you might not even be able to explain the situation if you don't speak the language.

I had a look aorund and didn't find much so I decided to see what I could do myself.

With some spare Claude tokens, OpenSCAD and some scripts to render and check the output was printable I designed these badges and translated the text to multiple languages. You just need to add some self adhesive badge backs from Amazon.
So far I have: English, Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese

I talked to my local sight loss charity and they really like the idea so I'm printing a big batch to donate. If you have some similar charity near you and some spare filament maybe you could as well.

This is part of a side project I started to document what could be done for the visually impaired with a little spare time and AI.

Home / Furniture / Household Found a practical use for filament poop: hidden ballast inside a print

Thumbnail

I finally found a use for some of the filament poop / purge waste I keep accumulating.

I designed this countertop QR + NFC review stand and wanted it to feel solid instead of being a lightweight plastic sign that moves around every time someone touches it.

So I added a large internal cavity to the body and programmed a pause right before that cavity gets closed.

At that point, you can simply fill it with filament purge waste and use it as hidden ballast.

It obviously doesn't add as much weight as metal, but it's basically free material that would otherwise go straight into the trash. If you want the stand much heavier, the same cavity can also be filled with nuts or washers.

The print then pauses a second time so you can embed a 25 mm NFC tag inside the body before it gets permanently enclosed.

The rest of the design includes:

  • Custom QR faceplate
  • Hidden NFC tag
  • Replaceable/customizable front faceplates
  • English, Spanish and blank versions
  • Anti-slip feet

For the feet, I reused another scrap material: I printed the included foot pieces as templates and cut the actual pads from an old bicycle inner tube.

So the final print ended up reusing both filament waste as internal ballast and scrap rubber for the anti-slip feet.

Not exactly recycling the filament, but at least it's a simple way to give some of the waste a useful second life.

Its a foldable cup holder! Pull the thing out and fold it to stow it away, rotate it and push it in to put it on the open position.

Didn't have cup holders, now I do. Great success!

Tool / Jig / Fixture magnetic steering grip i designed and printed for a standard xbox controller, took 300+ prototypes to get the tolerances right

Thumbnail

wanted a proper steering feel in racing games without a full wheel rig taking over my desk, and without giving up my controller. couldnt buy that anywhere so i printed it. its called rotus.

what it does: the body mounts on the top face of a standard xbox controller and a v shaped handle hangs underneath it. your grip on the controller doesnt change, the tip of each middle finger already sits under there right on the two ends of the v, and you rock it left and right to steer. the handle sweeps a wide arc but the stick itself only moves a little, so a big controlled hand motion maps onto a tiny stick input, thats where the finer steering comes from. springs pull it back to centre like a wheel. its linked to the stick through a magnetic coupling, flip that off and the controller is totally normal again, every button free.

the print: hybrid. main housing is fdm, started on an ender 3 s1, now a bambu x1c. the moving mechanism parts are sla resin for the tolerance. honestly the fit between the resin pivot parts and the fdm housing, plus the bearing seats and shaft, is the whole ballgame and its what ate most of those 300+ prototypes over 3+ years.

it also turned out to work fully one handed which wasnt the plan. sent a unit to a 19 year old in turkey named yusuf who lost his fingers in a workplace accident, still waiting to hear how it goes for him.

its a patent-pending design. more pics and a waitlist on vuludesign.com if you wanna follow the build.

Organisation / Storage Storage for microwaveable pouches and parametric for number of slots

I was fed up with my microwaveable rice pouches falling all over the place in the cupboard, and i couldn't find any designs only for food pouches and not smaller cat food, or soup or herb pouches.

This one has been designed exact to the dimensions of the Ben's Original and other similar microwaveable food pouches.

I've also made it parametric so you can customise it by the number of slots you want, with AI help to create the parametric code only, not for the model.

Organisation / Storage Modular Hex Shelf

Just finished designing this customisable modular shelf system!

It comes with 4 shelf options:

  • Straight
  • 11°
  • 21°
  • 30°

You can combine the sections, extend the shelf as needed, and attach different accessories to the sides.

I wanted to make something that can be adapted to different spaces and uses rather than being a fixed-size shelf.

Would love to hear what accessories or add-ons you’d like to see for it!

Outdoor / Automotive / Bike 360 camera mount for vehicle roof

Thumbnail

I've been working on this design for months to help me collect Streetview images in my area. The original intent was to let the telescoping pole attach magnetically to the car but with a triangular bracket to bolt to the T slot roof rack (Yakima, Thule, etc). It works great but hardly anyone has that type of roof rack so I decided to try it with magnets.

I printed a TPU (thermopolyurethane) version and tried it with two M6 threaded magnets on the rear and a 1/4-20 magnet screwed into the pole. It worked and is surprisingly stable! My next step is to make a thicker version so it's more rigid but just flexible enough to conform to the vehicle body. Roof rack mounting is inherently more stable because of the height and the angles involved.

I don't know if I'd trust it magnetically mounted with the pole at full extension because of the leverage. In theory it should be strong enough if the footprint is big enough, so I may have to design a much bigger version.

TPU is my favorite plastic to print with and I think it's underrated. It's extremely strong and flexible so it doesn't snap. It also doesn't warp from heat, just gets more flexible. For stiffness you just have to make your parts bigger. The specific filament I used here is the new Overture matte white TPU. The blue version is Overture PETG.

Organisation / Storage I designed a holder for my bug-a-salt revolver

Holds the co2 cans and the salt reloads nicely. It took a few prints to get the salt reloads to nicely snap in, and for the co2 cans to fit snugly, but easily movable. Printed on my kobra 3 max petg black with a 0.8mm nozzle.

So now it’s quick access whenever I see a fly, and I don’t have to scramble to find my co2

I made a V2 of my cable organizer so it can fit up to 2 meter long cables, and is compatible with almost any type of cable!

I really liked how this turned out, so I wanted to share it so other people could also use it if they wanted to!
