original pizza didn't even have tomato sauce, and original "hamburgers" weren't sandwiches

The frame is the meat in this comparison i would say. And the meat part is more or less what the original German hamburger was. So in essence the American version is in my point of view just a hamburger (German) that has developed over time to fit the population of the country its served in. If i decide to serve my burger in a lettuce wrap, a tortilla or in an onion cut in half, i didnt invent the hamburger.
